Sports shop bosses have apologised after printing a Hillsborough slur on a Manchester United shirt.

A sick fan tricked an assistant at a Sports Direct store into printing “96 – not enough’’.

That is the number of Liverpool fans who perished in the 1989 FA Cup semi-final crush. Colm Jackson, 22, posted a photo of his shirt, which also bears the letters YSB – You Scouse Bastards – on Facebook and boasted he bought it in Manchester.

Insulted Liverpool fans threatened to boycott the chain’s five Merseyside branches.

Hillsborough family support group chairman Margaret Aspinall, whose 18-year-old son James died in the tragedy, said: “Sports Direct are worse than the guy who wanted to put it on his shirt.

“Printing that message is like inciting trouble. It’s an absolute disgrace.’’

Last night a spokesman for Sports Direct, owned by Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley, 46, said: “Sports Direct is very apologetic for this spiteful and abusive shirt.’’

Jackson added: “It was a really stupid thing to do.”

Disgusting.

This is a horrible story, how could the assistant not know what it meant? Why didn't they check - the slogan itself seems odd, so they should've been wary. Terrible.

How horrible, Still I think it's strong to blame the shop. I wouldn't have got the reference if I worked there, The man who ordered it on the other hand is a disturbed individual.

Should make the guy wear the shirt and let him walk down a street in Liverpool

No, but would you work in a sports shop? Probably not. Most people who work in a sports shop have some background knowledge of sport. Either way; it's general store consensus to ensure nothing offensive is printed on shirts - some stores won't even print anything OTHER than player names. So something so obscure as "96 not enough" should have been checked out.

Edit: Oh but I do agree with you, the guy who got it printed is undoubtedly the worst.

Or a kid that just has a Saturday job and wasn't even born when it happened...

It is sick though,

I wasn't born when it happened either, but I know about it. As someone printing football shirts, they're trained not to let anything offensive pass through - it's obscure wording, he/she should've checked. But this is taking away from my point, I'm genuinely not saying that the kid is to blame, the person who was sick enough to even get that printed is the real sick bastard here.

I wouldnt blame the person working there at all, before i read the article i didnt even realise it was a man utd shirt and thought "YSB" was for Yossi bennayoun.

But yeh i know a few people who work in sports shops that do the printing that don't even watch football, as for knowing about it, until this year i didnt know about it.

If i was in the shop i would possibly question what the stuff meant and im sure he would have a valid believable story lined up to cover himself..

Fully blame the fan that asked for it printed.. terrible :nono:

Ben seriously? Until this year?

Wow, maybe I over-estimated peoples knowledge of Hillsborough! I genuinely thought everyone knew, or would at least know reference to it!!

It should be store policy to check printing then, from now on.

I know I'm not a huge sports fan but I had never heard of this until a few months back too.

Anyway the guy who requested it is just disrespectful and sick on so many levels.
