I'm a French-Canadian and english is my second language so its not perfect yet. When I see some of the posts here I wonder if either people don't care about their english or they're just uneducated *******.

Make a effort when you write, its for your own good as well.

But wasn't there a vote in Canada a few year back to decide French or English? and English won.
So English should be your First language surely unless you are from Quebec maybe

Both English and French are the official languages of the country. All over Canada we have people who speak English and French. Yes Quebec is where most Frenchies are but you can find many in every part of the country.

"A multitude of languages are spoken in Canada. According to the 2006 census, English and French are the preferred language ("home language", or language spoken most often in the home) of 67.1% and 21.5%, respectively.
English and French are recognized by the Constitution of Canada as "official languages," which means that all laws of the federal government are enacted in both English and French and that federal government services are required to be available in both languages."

Which makes me wonder. if the margin of English speakers is so much more than Spoken French.
Why English is not chosen as the 1st, it would save a lot of Paperwork regarding laws and also intergration also

This is the last place I thought I'd get into Canadian language laws, tabarnak.

Anyway, I don't have a problem lapsing into txt speak. A phone is a phone, a computer keyboard is a computer keyboard. My brain is developed enough to tell the difference between these two devices.

I also suspect the educational system in Britain is failing a lot of these young people. Many of them can't spell, construct sentences, or express themselves. Or, they choose not to out of some misguided belief that writing properly makes you a "posh twat" or something like that innit bruv.

I have to agree slightly with the OP to be honest... I wouldn't have put it so bluntly myself, but the spelling and grammar do leave a lot to be desired on here sometimes.

I don't have a problem with text-speak so much - it is more the incorrect use of "their", "there" or "they're" and similar typical grammar mistakes which, combined with poor sentence construction and general bad command of the English language, make some posts very hard to understand!

Of course... a lot of people don't know any better, or they can't be bothered checking or correcting even if they know it's wrong. Plus a lot of people, especially in a forum, are just wanting to quickly type a response and move on...

Shame really...

Nebi, je comprends... et je compatis avec tu! Ne t'inquiète pas de les gens méchantes!!

No capital 'E' for English? And you are a little hazy on the apostrophe for someone who's being so critical.

Make a effort when you write, its for your own good as well.

No capital 'E' for English? And you are a little hazy on the apostrophe for someone who's being so critical.

We all have different skills. I bet some of the people on here who make themselves understood without having perfect literacy can do lots of other things that you can't. So please... don't refer to people as idiots. It makes it seem like you're trying to make yourself look better. And you're not.

It's extremely debatable whether you should be starting a sentence with a cojunction.

Do you mean a CONjunction?

hmmm...though i just posted to say this is not an English grammar forum I feel compelled to inform you there is no grammatical rule that says you can't start a sentence with conjunction.

you can start a sentence with a conjunction no problem.

You're right. You can take all sorts of liberties with language and it's acceptable. I just thought it was funny someone had taken the trouble to show how clever they were, then completely misspell the word. I'm with you on the fact that this is a forum, not a classroom. There is no entrance test for people to be able to air their views.

prole, my post wasn't directed at yourself, apologies and etc, it was aimed at Delta and their nonsense re sentences and conjunctions. There is no such grammatical rule. And in fact, conjunction fronted sentences are quite common in 'sophisticated' texts; both academic and prose.

Incidently the whole confusion re - sentences cant begin with conjunctions is started in primary schools by teachers who either

a) dont have a full understanding of grammar themselves

or

b) because the teacher is trying to get pupils to construct more complex sentences using conjunctions.

now i sound like some kind of strung out grammar freak....:blush2:

Yes the standards of English in schools is terrible these days, there are also a fair amount of non English nationals allowed on the internet nowadays, funny old thing eh? Perhaps a little tolerance should be applied.

Incidentally as English is your second language(?), I hope you don't mind me pointing out it's "an effort" not "a effort". I believe there is a similar sort of rule in French about dropping the vowel in Le and La before words beginning with vowels. The rest of your punctuation and grammar, well let's just say, it leaves a lot to be desired.

Just a bloody shame old Lizzie signed away the Commonwealth, all these jumped up Johhny foreigners telling us how to speak the old Queens English. Then there is the playstation generation drowning us in text speak and corrupting the old mother tongue.

Don't get me started on the Yanks and all those bloody Americanisms. Gas for cars, nope sorry petroleum is a liquid which you may call petrol.

The main reason for this is the anti-English marxists in government etc, they don't like to promote anything English.

And by the way, English is spelt with a capital E.
