Been trying to get it off for about half an hour now/ runing one of the norton antivirus scans now but its taking ages. changed my internet homepage from facebook to some site about buying viagra, and changed my desktop background from r kelly to a warning thing. once ive ran the norton thing and its found it, does it delete straight away or is there something else ive gotta do? and heres a screencap

It's probably the fan check virus from Facebook. Norton is crap, get Antivir.
Do a system restore and download AVG Free, its so much better than these paid for antiviruses. Oh and get a Spyware/Malware checker as well, the one I've got is called Spybot Search and Destroy, thats free as well. Then you'll be pretty much OK as long as you keep updating them (which AVG does itself) and scanning (which AVG also does itself every day)

turn it off and back on it should say that theres a problem and most new ones (mine does) offers you a system restore.
If not, hit F12 (Mines f12) to do it that way as its loading up.

it might not be from facebook (though apparently there is a virus going round but I know nothing about it)
Watch out with LimeWire (or Bearshare) as I've lost a PC to those before - too many unsafe files.
Oh and with the new legislation passing your ip's may give up your d/l info so be carefull, run through a proxy is safer nowadays.

System restore didn't work, I set it to 3 different dates seperate times and it said it was unsuccessful each time
it wont let me on msn either, i sign in then it closes right away, same with the internet- could only get on here then by clicking 'forgot password' on msn then changing the url quickly
just do this then, download and install this, then run it, do a check or whatever
http://download.cnet.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10320142.html?part=dl-10044820&subj=dl&tag=button&cdlPid=11014801
then once thats done download and install this, then run it

been there....
I've had something like this before and had to reformat the HD and lost everything (including an external drive somehow).
First thing I can think of see if the CD drive still works and you can access it. If thats ok then get a mate to download those links and burn them so that you can get to them. (or a usb stick)
Other than that David Im sory, but out of ideas other than take to a shop (im not the best with pcs myself)

Thanks, didnt thinkof that. will give my mate a ring now and see where he is and try it

if you do have to reformat, you could try (and I don't know if it would work but its an attempt) install a virus checker on a usb drive and then slowly move everything you need onto it whilst checking (or maybe you could even run the program from the drive - theres a thought).
sorry Im not technically helpful rather come up with stupid ideas to try and get around the issues instead of solving it.
You probably will have to reformat it but will lose your stuff if you can't back it up

The only way out is the Nuke option. Back up what you can and reformat the entire disk. Better still, if the PC is old, (How old is it) replace the whole thing
Also System restore is a dead end as many viruses can hide in there. I use Avast and one of the scary functions on it is a boot scan, where the anti virus will find a way to scan your hard drive when you reboot, as some viruses lurk down there.
Another point to note is that some viruses also attack certain antivirus soft ware.
As far as Norton is concerned, ditch it and get something else, lake Avast or AVG. Norton is resource hungry and charges an annual fee.

I think it's about 4 or 5 years old now.
I've got my laptop back now anyway, think I'll just buy another tower thing for the computer.

Junky- Will download them later tonight, thanks.
Waldorf- You know you entered this thread to help :hello:
That looks like a version of the Vundo/Virtumonde trojan, some of the first things it does is change your background, disable the options and locks your task manager, norton and other anti virus softwares dont usually pick it all up, MalwareBytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/) free version gets rid of it.
Btw, stop watching porn and you wont get it again :joker:

I didn't watch porn :joker: Only sites I'd been on were Facebook and TiBB, other than that I was looking for msn smileys so must have got it from one of them sites.

Next time it happens and restore doesn't work, I have an option. It basically resets your computer back to factory settings, so it removes all your files etc, but everything is brand spanking new.
What you do... is when your comp is loading up, hold down f8... then a page should come up with the option "Repair your computer". Use that option to completely reformat your hard disk. I usually do this every few months anyway cos Microsoft are crap.
