View Full Version : *TiBB Forum Upgrade* Help us beta test!

Hi all,

After recent events and general desire for the forum to be upgraded, James and I have decided to upgrade the forum to vBulletin software. We have purchased it (it's not free) as well as purchasing some additional extra's (which I'll explain in a minute) and are currently spending on time testing it and familiarising ourselves with it.

The good news is that all posts/threads/u2u's and all that stuff is transferable over to the new software, and is currently in transition at the moment. We think most of the attachments should make it, but some might not make the cut. We will update you more on that nearer the time.

A lot of you have probably used VBUlletin on other forums, it's by far the most advanced and most secure forum software available, and there loads of new options will be available in your Control Panel. We are moving to VBulletin as part of TiBBs expansion into just not a Big Brother based website. This transition for the forum should be fairly straight forward, but for the website may be a few months away - the main reason being it's only James and I working on things, and we have lives to lead outside TiBB!

As I mentioned we are currently in the process of shifting all the data into the new database. There's a bit of tweaking that needs to make place to make sure all information from the current forum is compatible with the new forum, and it shouldn't take us more than a few days from now until that is complete. We are then going to have a 1 week beta-test period of the new forum, which serves a few purposes.

i) Moderators can get used to the new system in place to moderate the boards. Mods now have a joint control panel which makes everything a LOT easier than them being spammed with U2U's every new report ;)
ii) Allows James and I to add all the modifications that were on our old board, to the new board
iii) Allows a few people to test everything out, try all the new options and give the board a good test to make sure everything is ready to go live.

I know the demand to beta-test the new board is going to be heavy, and there's no real easy way to select people without being biased so I'm going to do it by random as it's the only fair way. I have selected a number between 1 and 1000 (only James and I know it), and you can U2U me your guess. The nearest 6 people will then be given a username/password (when we've set it up), and you get test away. Please only U2U if you are interested in trying out all the new features, and are willing to give us your opinions on what’s good and bad. (Mods need not apply, as they will get access anyway). This is open to people with more than 1000 posts.

A sneak peak of a couple of features the new forum has are:

Blogs!: A much requested feature, blogs are now integrated into your forum account. Blogs can be rated/commented etc and will hopefully play a big part in our transition into TiBB v2.0. Feel free to blog about absolutely anything!

Arcade: Another requested feature, a flash game arcade will be available. There are 8 games available, with built in leader boards and high scores. You can also create tournaments between yourselves and that sort of stuff.

Live update topic: This is something we are excited about, and will be great for topics which have a lot of replies in a short period of time. When you post a reply using the Quick Reply box and press OK, your post will appear in front of you attached to the thread without going via a "Thanks for posting" page. You can then stay on the page, and watch other peoples replies appear right in front of you, without even having to refresh! This saves you having to navigate around the forum and then back to the last post in the thread to see if there have been any replies.

Social Groups: We still aren't sure how we want these to work, and hopefully the beta-test will give us a better idea, but Social Groups are new areas of the forum (similar to Sub Forums), but are highly customisable for group creators. Each group has its own discussion board, and will have a creator. The creator can message all people in the group; have a group icon and that sort of stuff. You can only see posts from that social group if you join it. To avoid people wanting to be the first to create social groups, if you created the original topic on current TiBB, you have first choice to be in charge of the group. I haven't had much time to play around with them yet, so hopefully some of you can in the beta.

So in the meantime, please use this topic to ask questions, as well as give suggestions into what features you want on the new board, and I'll let you know if we can add them. If you are interested in helping to beta-test, just U2U me a number between 1 and 1000 ;)

We are also looking for someone to help us out with some graphics for the forum. If you are interested, just drop me a U2U with a link to some of your work and I'll get you setup with beta access also.

I think that's all for now... feel free to ask away!

Mark

The board I am a moderator on here (http://www.bautforum.com/) is also vBulletin so I have some experience.

We have an issue that some words are not allowed in thread titles, like time, and that can be really frustrating.

Also newbies if they post a link in their post have their post go into moderation, where a moderator has to approve it. Something I do quite a bit. This is an anti spam feature, as there is also a cute "find all posts by" feature used when we come across spammers.

They have their posts deleted and are then banned.

Two questions for now

when the transition is done, will we have to reregister?

Will we have to reconfigure avatars, over there they are smaller than here and they are not animated like some are?

Three more questions

You mention this taking some months, any possible clarrification of time scales

When we are ready for the switch over will the forum be locked down to prevent new posts during the switch over, if so how long do you expect that to be.

On a personal note, a while back when improvements had been done, I discovered some of my stories I had done in the creative writing section gained control codes, (possibly because I composed them in word and then pasted them on to TIBB), is there any danger of that happening again.

Re: avatars. Vbulletin avatars are all stored on the server so I think for now we will only import the static non-animated ones for now. We'll decide later whether to allow back animated gifs.

You won't have to re-register, probably just sign into the forum again.

Just bumping this so the questions don't get left behind.

Also to add, when you are testing, see if you can create a thread with the word time in the subject title. Over on BAUT we can not do that.

They were organised by posters rather than a function of the board

This is also slightly off topic

Anyway, whoever is doing Beta testing, should try and create a thread where the word time is in the subject title. On Baut which is VBulletin it will not let you post such a thread.

You'll probably have to login again so...

Can you make sure they have your proper email address registered, or know your password.

Accounts with blank emails won't import into VBulletin...

(but they will really because I will enter a new email address for those members).

Before you post too many times, see what happens if you make a post with a link.

They usually go into a moderation queue if you have not had too many posts.

It is an anti spammer feature

If you have a number of posts this does not happen, I suspect if you have less than 10 posts, any post with any link goes into moderation.

One of my functions as a moderator on the other board is to find these posts, and if they are legit, approving them. (Only mods can see them)

A lot of times they are from spam bots and we delete the post and issue a permenant ban against the user.

Right, here's what the new chat-room is like...

It's basically a small section of the forum index, and anyone can just randomly come in and message, or they can just watch the chat without anyone knowing, which although is slightly creepy, is good.

I personally have experienced problems with it, I have to refresh every few seconds to see people's messages, although I'm the only one out of the people who have tried it that has experienced these problems, so I don't think it's anything to worry about right now.

You have different sections of the chat room, and one main room.

One is called "XFactor" which you go in to chat about XFactor with people.

We have requested a section for football, and I'm pretty sure that a Big Brother section of the chat room will be made soon.

It's got a very different feel to the old chat room, which only you can decide is a good thing or a bad thing.

You can also "slap" members in the chat room (/slap, and then the user ID here)

Scarlett.
26-09-2009, 08:16 PM
There will probably be a few more rooms in the chatbox in the final version as well :D

The avatar limit is 300kb, and most animated avatars are over 1000, so currently animated avatars aren't allowed.

The size limit is still 150x160 though.

It's another forum that runs vBulletin, and also why I did not take part in Beta Testing. I already know some of the features, plus I have Mod duties there so was not available to help with Beta testing.

Are we going to get User made layouts again? That was such a great step forward, would suck to go backwards now!

Tomorrow for the new forum... hopefully... posts / user accounts have been transfered across.

We'll keep the old going one for a few days to smooth over the changeover.

It won't allow animated avatars initially. :S The avatars are stored on this server, so have to check how it would affect the speed of the site.

We'll see what we can do on the user-made layouts, though VB styles are more complicated to create so not sure how possible yet.

It'll be work in progress restoring features we had previously, but there is lots of new stuff.

Hey,

Sorry, I've had a rough couple of days with some things happening in real life and havent had a chance to work on it properly. I'll try and get things up to speed this evening, I know James has been doing a lot on it also.
