Of course I can compare them to a band that's influenced them hugely and who they can't come close to in terms of quality. Time and again Radiohead have seeked to reinvent themselves whereas Muse just lift ideas from other bands, namely Radiohead and Queen (bit of Smashing Pumpkins and Rage against the Machine in there too and alot of Depeche Mode) and then overcook it to the extreme, from Bellamy's mimicry of Yorke and Mercury, to the bands penchant for excess but without the substance of the bands they're trying to copy. They're a well polished and solid band but are cliche ridden pompous in comparison to the big boys.

You don't know anything about anything. Just a bunch of cynical unsubstantiated knowledgeless views - not opinions.

If you think he copies Radiohead, you don't know anything about Radiohead. If you think he copies Queen, then you know nothing about Queen, or Freddie Mercury. It's about musical knowledge and appreciation. Just like no two acts are the same - you're saying they are.

Basically, what myself and many many people will tell you is, appreciation is about distinctiveness and appreciating that. But if you see the same - the pity is on you.

If you can't see the difference - that's your problem, not anybody else's. I think you just want an excuse to be indirectly and inaccurately critical.

Apart from other things, in this case, learn about music and then even try to muster a return to mock this. If you knew music, you'd know how silly you look here.

Why is it that Thom Yorke (amongst many many other musicians (musicians being the operative word) said he admires Muse and Bellamy for the music they do...:conf: Beats me...

Smashing pumpkins? DEPECHE MODE!? Rage against the machine? They're nothing alike. I've yet to hear a Muse song that's like Personal Jesus, or Dani California or Killing in the name of. I'll give you Queen and Radiohead as Radiohead was an INFLUENCE on the first album and Queen an INFLUENCE on the Resistance. But saying they've lifted ideas is just a little idiotic, I've yet to hear Radiohead write an album based around 1984 (The Resistance) or Queen doing an album about finding happiness at the end of the world(Absolution).

Muse is influenced by a lot of bands but so is Radiohead (from what I've heard their's includes the Smiths and Queen). No modern band exists without influences. Look at Oasis and Arctic Monkeys, their influences obviously include Beatles yet you haven't attacked them like Muse?

The morale here that influence is different from 'lifting ideas'. Muse have done things their own way and have themes and concepts to their music that Queen or Radiohead have never tried. For the first and last albums you can say that Radiohead and Queen were big influences respectively but Muse has different ideas and present their music in a different way which makes them different to the aforementioned bands.

Nah, they lift ideas from other bands - completely lacking in creativity themselves. I could post you songs from Depeche Mode and Rage against the Machine that sound so alike some of the songs that Muse have produced. I have no problem with a band having influences but I want to hear some depth and balls in what I listen to, and with Muse all I hear is a highly polished but souless band. Don't hear a band with them.... just a pastiche of other bands in creating heartless but entertaining songs. No depth to them. Excellen musicians but that's about it.

And don't get me started on the pretentions and pomposity that are on display with this new album. I mean, it's really slick but I have no idea who these guys are or what they're trying to say. Glossy souless music from a band who are deeply in love with themselves and their own self importance that's hugely influenced by Queen and Depeche Mode. It's like a tribute act.

Okay you're repeating yourself, first of The resistance isn't brainless or soulless it's about the book 1984 and themes such as surveilance and dictatorships and love. Every album has their own ideas. Matt Bellamy loves conspiricies and theories so they often serve the basis of a lot of his material. Every song they do has a meaning it's far from soulless or shallow.

You obviously don't know that much about them so don't ry to argue about stuff like this with me sicne I'm a huge fan I know a lot more about them then you do.

I've listened to the album and it's a bloated mess really. They're good musicians but it's an exercise in excess and as for the lyrics, good lord - all encompassing and pretentious, designed to sound profound and meaningful with Bellamy's usual theatrical stylings, when in reality they're merely silly catchphrases that any idiot could write. "Love is our resistance" is an example of the gems we have on show here. When are they actually going to sing about anything small or real or intimate?

Listen to Diamond Dogs if you want an album about 1984 which actually has great lyrics and balls. Muse don't posess that kinda artistry. It seriously sounds like Queen and Depeche Mode but without the fun of the former or the coolness of the latter. They're a ridiculously pretentious band.

Setanta, I do realise you're only writing all this because the fact I destroyed you in the Marijuana thread and completely obliterated your lefty liberal idealism with some real intellect and real intelligence.

But you really shouldn't come here and make yourself look stupid by saying things that anybody with a real understanding and experience of music, well just an average understanding and experience of music will laugh at you for.

Seriously... we all listen to music here and appreciate it. Bands like the ones you mention, Bowie included have praised Muse - they are seen as pioneers in music and credited by people who have been around before them.

I guess the simple fact is, they don't know an idiot could do that music but that's why you're here telling us this and Matt Bellamy and Muse are getting the plaudits of very much successful musicians like themselves.

Quite a straight forward difference isn't it. Worldwide global success and plaudits for their achievement and you... telling us they are rubbish.

[Sarcasm ON]

If only you were around to tell Depeche Mode, U2, David Bowie and Queen how rubbish Muse are. They would have listened to you Setanta and saved the whole world from going to sell out worldwide stadium tours.

[Sarcasm OFF]

Carry on... This is funny.

The fact that you mentioned the marijuana thread - a thread in which your ignorance and bias on the subject was highlighted again and again - really illustrates the kind of self-serving individual you are and the lengths you'll repeatedly go to in order to satisfy your own ego.

Do you ever read what you say? I haven't been goading anyone here and have actually taken it upon myself to ignore your attempts to illicit a response from me, but on this occassion I'll respond for a little while.

Thom Yorke has never liked Muse.... that's a reality darling.

David Bowie has never mentioned Muse before.... seriously, where do you get this stuff from?

Muse go on tour with Depeche Mode and then their new album copies many of that artists traits and don't get me started on Queen.

Bellamy influenced by Rage against the Machine on his albums prior to last one and Radiohead obviously played a huge part in their first album or two.

As for their awards, the vast majority of them are related to their live performances, which suggests a technical prowess that I've never once dismissed. They're a tight band who play very well together but I find them souless, pretentious and derivative.

That particular song is a great example of how they take from other bands and slightly modify the sound. This is the original.

And if you don't think the intro and general flavour of the two songs sound very very similar, here's a website where a guy decided to mash up the pair of them.

When I first heard the opening of Map of the Problematique I honestly thought it was going to be a cover until Bellamy started warbling.

That particular song is a great example of how they take from other bands and slightly modify the sound. This is the original.

And if you don't think the intro and general flavour of the two songs sound very very similar, here's a website where a guy decided to mash up the pair of them.

I know it's difficult to understand but

They've won live award after live award.

They have tried all kinds of different routes. Bellamy is always trying new technologies (partly why they have so many supporters) and his ability to transfer this live (which was a problem for a lot of bands) gives him a lot of kudos.

I think Absolution was like their high point but they have reached a stage of respect for their musicianship that won't go away.

The 3 parter on the new CD is something really special.

hello fellow muse fans saw them last night in sheffield arena what a amazing gig we were meant to have standing tickets but ended up with seats in block next to stage on the side matt spent most of his time <3 and after watching the floor become a almost human wave with the pushing the fact we would have been right inbetween the 2 mosh pits that kept opening up (me and my friend arent very good with crowds) and the fact i have never seen that many people pulled out and kicked out for crowd surfing in 1 gig (played knights of cydonia as last song and the security guards were pulling someone every 5 seconds in that song alone one of the security got punched in the nose)we were rather glad for our seats, i mean yeah if we were down there we would have joined in (to a point although i fear i would have been carted out from passing out) but some people really were going far too far
but anyway they played all of my favs stage looked awesome and matt looked hot

My favourite song by them is a tie between Starlight and Plug In Baby.
Also, Knights of Cydonia, Supermassive Back Hole, Time Is Running Out, Uprising are great songs too.
