It's on Channel 4 next Monday at 9. The programme looks at transgender children in the US as guidelines come up for review in the UK. I am always a bit shocked by this subject and wondered what the rest of you thought.

They shouldn't be taken seriously until they are of the age of 16-18 or even higher, surely?

No way would you be able to deal with something as life changing as a sex change till AT LEAST 18,mentally and physically it would be a minefield.

They shouldn't be taken seriously until they are of the age of 16-18 or even higher, surely? Yeah. You would think they would have to be of adult age before they could take the decision of such matters into their own hands? What kind of parent would want to take such a life changing decision for their kid?

i was extremely shocked when i saw the advert i have seen other programs like this and all those who wanted it knew from a very early age they weren't in right body but 8 is no age to be making informed decisions and what about those parents hardly acting responsibly really

Why?
Question the upbringing really.
And at 8 a desicion doesn't stick in 6 month they could want to be normal again.
Just ridiculous why give them a show it will just make them want it more.

I am a bit old fashioned. If we are born with cock and balls, we should die with cock and balls.
Can't believe kids as young as 8 are wanting to change gender! At that age, I didn't even know the idea existed!

To be honest I am quite surprised that kids of that age would want to go through with such a process.

My question is, and I am unclear of the process. If the 8 year old gets a Penis, will it grow?? CAuse that could be a problem.

There is no way in hell a child should be allowed to go through with an op like this.
I have an 8 year old child and he barely knows anything about his bits-n-bobs let alone be old enough to not want the ones he was born with.
The very idea of allowing that kind of surgery on a child is just downright irresponsible.
I also agree with Ben... making a show about this just encourages these ridiculous ideas. That poor kid now has to grow up having been a part of this sideshow.
If there ever was a case for calling social services, this is it.

Exactly, basically this has somthing to do with the parents..
If a kid said somthing like that you would explain to them or just take it as a joke or just even say no.
They must have encouraged it to get this far.

We live in a society where people want to get their 15 minutes of fame, no matter what the cost.
Look what Karen Matthews did to her own daughter for the media attention and the money she expected to get for it.
You only have to watch some of these documentaries to see the lengths people will go to for their time in the spotlight. Look at octo-mom.. that whole thing is a well planned media circus.
I find it incredibly sad that children are being used in this way. And, I find it even sadder that the media companies give these people attention, when they should be sent to family counselling.
I am a bit old fashioned. If we are born with cock and balls, we should die with cock and balls.

I'm exactly the same, I don't buy into people claiming to be born into the wrong body

I think adults should be able to get a sex-change op if it's what they want, but children are not old enough to make such a life-changing decision.
There was a story about it in a paper a while ago about this where a boy was at a school, then after the holidays came back as a girl. The parents told the staff and stuff and they told the kids that the boy had left and a new girl had come. Was in the UK aswell. Why parents would allow that to happen I have no idea.

They must have encouraged it to get this far.I was thinking this before. In America sometimes they seem to push their kids into stuff. Like when you see little girls all dolled up when their parents are pushing them into being performers for instance. Can you imagine a kid, say, in Liverpool or Manchester having this done? Imagine the bullying that would go on in and out of school? I cannot see this bringing happiness to a kid. I can only see this causing underlying problems in the childs future.

tbh kids at 8 are not at all old enough to make a decision like that.

They covered that on This Morning the other week, Lauren Harries was on and went a bit psycho. Car crash TV, pretty funny to watch if you have a bored 10 minutes, probably on youtube somewhere :joker: Bit that made me laugh went something like
Doctor: I've been working with trans people
Lauren: Excuse me, I don't like the term trans people
Phil: How would you describe it better?
Lauren: Trans women
:D:laugh2:
She also did an impression of Anne from Little Britain at the end
Edit- yeah its here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4ksAxzWPCc

Lauren Harries is a very confused and disturbed individual who was pushed into media attention at an early age. A prime example of how the life led by a kid can **** them up forever.
haha I've seen that, it made me piss.
Hahah gonna watch that over dinner! :D

An excellent candidate for celebrity big brother I always thought if ever there was one. Perfect car crash Tv.
