In your mind you might be able to. But really, bet you can't.

Of course we exist, but on what level is the question. This life could be a mental projection we are sending ourselves from another plane.

LEt me give you a quote from Descates, I have studied his relativity theory, and its pretty convincing. YOu have to read it very carefully, I remember, it took me a while to even undertand what he was talking about:

"But I have convinced myself that there is absolutely nothing in the world, no sky, no earth, no minds, no bodies. Does it now follow that I too do not exist? No. If I convinced myself of something [or thought anything at all] then I certainly existed. But there is a deceiver of supreme power and cunning who is deliberately and constantly deceiving me. In that case I too undoubtedly exist, if he is deceiving me; and let him deceive me as much as he can, he will never bring it about that I am nothing so long as I think that I am something. So, after considering everything very thoroughly, I must finally conclude that the proposition, I am, I exist, is necessarily true whenever it is put forward by me or conceived in my mind. "

Not the exact Matrix, but the trilogy is fantastic and raises all those sort of questions, yes.

One thing that IS fake however, and most people don't realise this, is your ego. It's just been built up over time and can be altered or removed at will. This is also where 'bad trips' come from, i.e. people who freak out on psychedelics because they come to the sudden realisation of just how subjective and temporary there current lifestyle is. Ego death was long sought after in ancient times because by removing everything you know and all your distractions you could dig right down into your inner subconscious.

I definately think there is a hell of alot more to our minds than we know about or how to use. Not sure about exact percentages but there's quite a large percentage of brains that we don't use, it has to be there for something, but what?

I seriously do believe we will be at war with robots in like a million years or something, that is given that we arent all wiped out by the 'aliens' that are searching the universe for us,m the same as we are doing for them.

I mean seriously, people are obsessed with the idea of aliens, but there is bound to be something else out there, that is likely to be as obsessed with finding us, as we are with finding them, which will happen first?

There is a plant called Salvia Divinorum that Shamans used in ancient cultures which when smoked at a sufficient dosage, would provide psychedelic trips to such an extent in a ten minuet period that users would literally live the full, complete life of an entirely different person in an entirely different space and time. All within the confines of there mind.

Exactly. HIs theory was based on doubting everything. JUst like the OP here. HE is saying that in his dreams, he has similar experiences, as when he is awake. WHich make him conclude that he cant really say for sure, if he is awake or asleep. So he doubts that anything is real. SO after thinking to himself that its possible that nothing really exists, the only think thats for sure, is the doubt in his thoughts. And those doubts and thoughts, are the only think that proves, that he really exists: Which make him conclude: I think therefore, I am.

Descartes also uses that theory to prove the existence of god. Another story.

Maybe it was aliens who created us. A superrace now deceased or living in another universe who created us, left us here and let it all play out.

There is definitely something out there in the universe. It bugs me when people use science to say ''nothing can survive without water lolz''.

THAT'S THE POINT. ALIEN. NOT. LIKE. US.

Water could kill the bloody things!

Indeed, when you are alseep, and dreaming, you think you are awake, you get the same feelings etc. I still feel pain in my dreams, though apparently thats not possible...but yeah, when you are dreaming, you never think to yourself, I might be dreaming, you just accept that whatever is happening...is happening, if that makes sense.

This could well be a dream.

We might not even be alive yet. Maybe there is something we need to do to wake up, and this earth is just our imagination...there is something better out there.

Raises another interesting point. Many blind/deaf/both people have incredibly heightened inner sense of mind, due to being able to block off by default sensory distractions from the outside world.

Hence why people use sensory deprivation tanks when exploring such topics as this...

I assume you all know of 2012, Being the end of the Mayan Calender, and people Assuming its the end of the world.

Im one of the few that belive its not the End of the world,BUT Somthing will happen that day that will change our world forever,

Like VickyJ Pointed out, there might be another type of people such as Aliens, searching for us!

They might have their own little world somewere, with their own Technology and their own version of Big Brother ..which I Would love to see..

But anyway, Maybe on 21st December 2012..These people may find us, or we may find them!

Somthing could happen on that day Good or Bad, that can change our world forever,
The end of the Mayan Calender, meaning the end of the way we think our world is today..
But infact it could just be the begining,

Like it says on the 2012 Trailer..

The End..Is just the begining

Look up Astral Projection. You don't have to believe in Astrology or any of that nonsense but the practice itself is entirely real, but incredibly hard to pull off.

Essentially, you try and 'catch' yourself when you fall asleep, so only your body sleeps but your mind stays awake. Think the opposite of sleepwalking. In this state, you can fully, and knowingly, float about the place but most people cant will themselves past the first stage due to fear.

A common tactic is to repeat the phrase ''this is a dream'' before you sleep so that when you DO fall asleep, that is the first thing you think. Best tried when trying to get back to sleep in the morning, as opposed to sleeping for the first time at night.

If it all goes well, you will still be lying there awake, but your body will be buzzing all over [the sensation of your body sleeping, which you normally never realise as your mind sleeps too] and you can 'lift yourself' up and look down on yourself sleeping!

There is a lighter version a lot of people experience once in there lifetime called lucid dreaming, achieved through similar means. It's basically when you know you are in a dream and you can thus control it.

I find it amazing that when we sleep, we basically live this second life most people ignore.

I hope everyone here knows you actually dream EVERY night? It's only the dreams you REMEMBER that you count?

There is another world going on inside your head for a very, very large percentage of your life!

I didnt know lucid dreams actually happened...I remember watching 'vanilla sky' and wishing they could actually do something like that, which to be honest, come a few thousand years, they probably can. You dont 'die'...you just go to sleep...

That film is fecking brilliant, and very thought provoking...again, given that in theory, it could happen.

Another very good metaphor here, this time from Terrance McKenna.

If your mind is a computer, then everything you know, your culture, is just an operating system installed onto it.

McKenna is really worth checking out if your into this stuff. Also, I have the Matrix Boxset with the philosophers commentaries, because I am a gigantic nerd and stuff.

The first was definitely the better 'film' but the sequels were far more deep.

Not full blown astral projection, but I have had lucid dreams where I controlled what happened in the dream. The difference is I knew I was in a dream, whereas with Astral Projection it feels like you are floating around in real time. Most people find it scary and can never pull it off because it feels like death. I used to try it by holding a rock over a pot in bed, so that when I would fall asleep the rock would drop and snap me into the state. I used to try it at around 6 in the morning when I was most vulnerable.

I have been in a state of dream, when I actually consciensly knew that I was dreaming. I dont know how to explain it, but I knew I was in a dream. It has happened few times, and It was like I was watching a movie happen, with me starring in it. Just certain things happened, that made me realise I was in a dream, but I was still asleep. Its rare that it happens, but it does to me sometimes.

I know the feeling because i used to take extacy when I was younger, and I can kind of recreated the feeling of 'coming up' and actually being high by thinking about it...its very strange...I actually feel off my face, very good thing to be able to do when you are having a crap night.

I know what you mean. There is a sort of halfway version of lucid dreaming where you feel like you are watching yourself in the dream from within the dream and your thinking ''gosh, no, I should not do that!'' about your 'dream self' who is about to do something incredibly stupid.

I love how downright bizarre dreams are. You could have a dream set in your own house, but the halls might be twice as long, and the floors might be a different color. It's fascinating.

I have a totally different house in dreams that I remember.

Its so weird, whenever I dream Im doing something at home, its always in this same place...but I have never ever been to that place, or havent that I know of. I only know of it from my dreams.

I dream about other places that I havent been to, and people i have never met, but know well in my dreams aswell.

I dont usually have weird dreams like other people, I have ones that could actually be happening, like Im just living another life really...its crazy.

Obviously I do still get strange ones once in a while though :joker:

Haha lol! Thast what I mean. Sometimes I am in my house in a certain place, and when I go outside, I am in another country that I lived in.

I even got shot once, and died, but I knew I was dreaming. SO after gettting shot, its pith black, and I try to wake up. IT takes a few seconds, when I force it, and I wake up. Yeah, dreams are way bizarre. ONe o the great mysteries of humans

You know that feeling when you drift into sleep and fall off a cliff only to jerk awake? That's a natural instinct from our days as pre humans who lived in trees. This instinct was developed and needed to prevent our ancestors from falling off trees in there sleep and dying. And it's still with us.

Sounds a bit like sleep paralysis when you are dozing but still awake but can't move, until you force yourself awake. The body stops itself acting out your dreams but sometimes you can't move before you are actually asleep. I have had that.

If I've understood it right... that only proves to me that I exist. It doesn't prove to me that you and everything else exists. :p

What is the purpose of dreams, do you think?

Dreams Get Rid of Emotional Arousal

It has been agreed for some time that dreams deal with emotion. However, not all emotion causes dreaming. Only emotional arousal unexpressed while awake causes us to dream. So, for example, if you have a screaming row with your partner you are unlikely to dream about it as the emotional arousal was allowed full expression. However if you become angry with someone at work but cannot express it then this frustration will probably be played out during dreaming.

(This gives us an indication why dreams and hypnosis are interlinked.)
How Do Dreams Work?

The brain will 'flush out' emotional arousal by creating a dream of a scenario that parallels the real-life experience - a metaphor. So, the work colleague from above might be symbolised by a monster and your anger would be allowed expression as you attacked the dream creature.

If you ruminate angrily over the same issues the next day then you may well have a repetitive dream as the brain solves the same problem in the same way.

Apparently

I don't know if I buy that.

When I was 4 I dreamt I went to IKEA with the Teletubbies, no joke.

That is nothing to do with me holding back emotions in real life. I just had the two things on my mind probably. I think we just dream as our minds mix all our thoughts together from the day and several dreams come from that.

Deja Vu..theres another mind****!

The term "déjà vu" (French for "already seen", also called paramnesia) describes the experience of feeling that one has witnessed or experienced a new situation previously. The term was coined by a French psychic researcher, Émile Boirac (1851–1917) in his book L'Avenir des sciences psychiques (The Future of Psychic Sciences), which expanded upon an essay he wrote while an undergraduate French concentrator at the University of Chicago. The experience of déjà vu is usually accompanied by a compelling sense of familiarity, and also a sense of "eerieness", "strangeness", or "weirdness". The "previous" experience is most frequently attributed to a dream, although in some cases there is a firm sense that the experience "genuinely happened" in the past. Déjà vu has been described as "Remembering the future."

This just give me chills

I have déjà vu all the time. I dream things then they happen.

I sort of believe the theory that we are born as a different person after but I really hate it, you kill yourself and you have to come back again no matter what. Even if your life is wonderful and you don't realise you're constantly living different lives it's a horrible thought to me. I want to just die and have an afterlife. Perhaps we do exist but in 2 worlds as someone said earlier on. Our dream world which we live in permanently once we die, and earth when we aren't sleeping.

Or maybe we dont exist and when we die we end up in whatever we believed in. Afterlife, heaven, etc.

I agree, it's not easy to prove it really. It reminds me of a story I heard about a man in the WTC who was on one of the floors where the plane actually hit. He apparently saw it coming and then blacked out, when he awoke ten minutes or so later, the phone was ringing. He thought to himself, is this god ringing me up to tell me I'm dead, or am I still alive!!! I can imagine after the chaos of a plane hitting the building how would you know if you were alive or dead?? Not sure if that's relevant to this thread though :idc:

So I sort of kind of solved world hunger. We shall become plants.

I then thought for awhile that the ganja's plant mind was manifesting in me. It kind of makes sense. Get me to smoke it then infiltrate me with it's plant ideals. It could be trying to preserve itself.

I'll just stop now.

Some fascinating concepts in this thread.

I am real, I dont need to prove it, you all only exist in my reality.

I breathe air and I got a pulse and five working senses, I exist for I'd not have any of these otherwise.

Does anybody else think about when we die, that might just be it. If there isn't any life after death or being reborn. That's it, you no longer get to be on the earth and your existance is no longer and will never ever (again) be.

I study Philosophy AS and this is one of the key topics we study. If you look at the classic Descartes "I think, therefore I am." he is basically suggesting that because he thinks he must exist. But some would argue that is not enough to prove your existance. Just because you can "think" wouldn't mean you "exist". The idea of your brain in a jar in a laboratory miles away and you are just "there".

You can experience life through senses but because you may think a food smells nice somebody might think that is horrid. Would somebody who is colour blind experience the WHOLE world differently? Hume's missing shade of blue theory implies that sense experince may not be sufficent to understand you (or other people/things) exist.

Does a person in a coma exist? They are unable to communicate and carry out person like actions. Status of people is also very important for proving existance.

Solopsism - "buzz world".

Rationalism - is reason enough to prove of your existance. Locke's Table proves this.

I could talk about this lots.

I know this has moved on a bit from the dreams/sleep topic, but I'm pretty sure I have had the sleep paralysis thing happen to me a few times, always the same thing it feels as if someone is there but I can't move to turn around and see who it is, its really scary.

I used to have it a lot when I was little.

It got to the stage where I knew I would be waking up soon, because a hole would open in the ground and I would have to jump down it to wake up.

And an old woman use to be lurking nearby. She was in a wheelchair, and when I see her I knew what was about to happen. I had this for years.

That sounds weird, did you know the old woman or was she just in your dreams?

I have dreams were I know that I'm dreaming and try to wake myself up.

How do you know you're actually eating it? Where is the proof apart from your own perception that it's actually there?

There is no proof nothing exists. Because existence is a concept we made up, so how can we be sure it is true?
