It's hardly surprising though, is it. You can't have blackboards, there was talk about changing the black ball in snooker. I'm sure the ******* who run with this **** are forgetting that black is a colour for other things, not just skin.
It's disgusting, if you think enough about it. Do you think there'd be a massive uproar if a black person called an anglo 'whitey'? No.

And if anything, this PC bollocks has worked against itself. I mean, isn't the point of antiracism to treat all as equal? Not make it hard to communicate because you have to call them 'African American Non Colour Golden Cow King Awesome of Spectacular Land'. That isn't equal. It's making a needless show of people who are wanting to be treated just like Milky Joe on the corner.

if the term used is in a derisory intention then it is bad, if it is not as in this case then there is no issue.
The real issue here is that various 30 something white producers at the bbc (where most of the black people drive cars and clean) became worried they would get the blame if a Jan Moir "hate-feck" internet blame-a-thon occurred.
'African American Non Colour Golden Cow King Awesome of Spectacular Land'

So you think banning anything that could be misconstrued, and not necessarily racist, AS racist is a good thing?
I laugh at this because I am not racist and because it is one step too far. As I said before, if someone is racist they will continue being racist. This is not dealing with the underlying issue. Paper over the cracks.

Yes I do. If it offends one person, I dont think it should be allowed on a public network.
But personally, I gladly welcome people making such remarks, or laughing at it. To me, they are just words, they dont affect me. BUt at least they let me know about the person. As long as I am not discriminated against, as long as I am not denied opportunities, as long as violence is not involved, its just fine with me. Let them all stand up, and show themselves, so I can promptly avoid them in the future.

It's the PC people pandering them that does it. It's similar to kids, when they fall and you shower them in hugs and kisses and they start crying, yet if you don't make a fuss out of it they carry on without a second thought, no tears and no fuss.

I suppose if people feel offended then their feelings should be taken seriously first..
however the racist issue.. the main thing that pisses me off is why one rule for black people and yet the rules are stricter for white people..
times have changed since the 60's.. we live in a cosmopolitain country now.. there are more black people, people from difference backgrounds, countries, etc, with english not being the first language. I mean pretty soon, I bet in about 50 years time there will probably be as many black people in this country as white people!
Anyway the bottom line is, same rules should apply for both white and black people.

Let me just put my last point on this thread. You cant think for people. YOu cant say well you shouldnt be offended, because that wouldn't offend me.
Now I am black, and I say, that offends me. Take it how you will.
Accept the fact, and then act accordingly. One or the other. either Carry on making those remarks, because you dont care, which is fair enough. At least I respect people being real, and I would know what kind of person you are. Or stop doing it, because you realized, it offended someone. Plain, and simple.
Why does it offend you though? Would you get offended if someone called you a bourbon?

Look, we all have our crosses to bare. The happiest we can ever expect to be is if we meet halfway. I'll try not to offend, if you try to understand that some things that do offend you are not meant to and are just sore subjects for you that not everyone knows about. Benefit of the doubt is needed. We all can't be perfect all of the time, and slack should be given in both directions for this to work.

I just remembered something, so I thought I would share. When I first moved to the US, I was like 14. And where I am from in Senegal, people arent sel conscious about their weight. IN fact a lot of them enjoy being overweight.
BUt one day, this girl I use to hang out with, she is not fat or anything, as a matter of fact, I thought she was hot. Anyways, she was going to town eating some chips. SO I made the remark, "wow dude, slow down with them chips". ANd next thing I know, she is sobbing, being consoled by one of her friends, who knew me very well. And she let her know, I didnt mean it that way.
I had no idea what the hell I did wrong. BUt then the other girl told me, she is self conscious about her weight etc....
Ever since then, I have never made any kind of remark like that to anyone, even if its innocent, I am always aware of it, in the back of my head.

Fact is white people havent been adversly affected by discrimination and prejudice (being the majority group) in the real world so they are less likely to be offended by someone picking on them because of their race. If white people were a minority and people were constantly pointing out their colour it would soon become offensive, believe me!

That comment was made about BOTH races, he made the same kind of joke about the white person AT THE SAME TIME. Not as an afterthought to try and sort his 'mistake' out, was in the same sentence for crying out loud.
''Here we have our very own chocolate HobNob and custard cream - Diane Abbott and Michael Portillo.''

I'm sure Diane Abbott wasn't offended any more than Michael Portillo was. It was a light-hearted comment, not meant to be offensive. If it had been meant in an offensive way then it would have been different.
I find that it's mostly left-wing, middle-class, touchy-feely white people who get a bit hysterical and stir up a racial hornets' nests like this.
While we're talking about discrimination, I'd just like to mention the white lower-working class, or "unter-class" as they have been referred to in the press. They have no special funding, They have no 'inclusion centres' or a board set up to ensure they are not disciminated against and they do not benefit from positive discrimination. No one cares whether or not they are "under-represented" in a particular area of industry and the chattering classes do not get outraged on their behalf. And they are the people that the BNP are currently targetting for membership.

There are sure start centres in all local deprived areas, inclusion workers in schools/colleges and schemes designed to give people a better start and opportunities (things I never had and some of my family make the cast of Shameless look tame!), I think your right there should be more done but its not like they are overlooked completely and its not like there should be one without the other. This particular incident was a storm in a teacup Im sure but it amazes me how people jump to the conclusion that the world has gone PC mad, its not, and you cant say anything nowadays blah blah blah! A few people complained and its not worth even giving the story the time of day, its bull but the Mail love to pick the few incidents where they can try and prove that we've all gone pc mad!

Anyhow, this is going no where, lets leave it, im just going to end up disliking people. End of the day, in my opinion, if your white, and you say "******" or "*****", no matter the context, your racist, even if your not a hateful racist, your still racism.
We was slaves for 400 years. Your peoples got 400 years of free work, we got a word, you got the better deal out of this LOL.
Its the history, i dont expect you or any other white person to understand, you cant, its impossible.
So? You personally wasn't a slave. The bottom line is racism is discrimination against other groups of people. So why discriminate against another race by saying one race can use a word because they were associated more heavily with it? In theory, why is that any different to black people not being allowed to sit down on buses?
If the shoe was on the other foot it would definitely be racist.

Right, so if racism is alive then surely you'd want it to stop, especially as a black person? So why are you racist, no matter what the context, for saying it if you're white when you can when you're black? If its all about equality then perhaps you should re-evaluate that. Is a white person racist for saying it in the EXACT same way and context as a black person?

Maybe a little off topic, but there was something about this earlier on in the thread. But why do some men (in general) tend to say "I'm homophobic" and when asked "Why?" they answer "Well I find gay men disgusting.. But lesbians are hot" :|

I dont think white people should say "*****" and definatly not "******". White people shouldnt say it full stop, even as a joke, i dont see anything funny about it.
"If you let a whiteboy call you one then you's a dumb *****".
Only a house ***** would let a white person call them one and be fine with it/find it funny.

Then ironically thats racist in itself. If skin colour isn't a problem, why is it one rule for one and another rule for others?
History shows that white people used the word to be hateful. Thats why its unacceptable for them to use it. Why would a white person want to use it anyway?
I don't think anyone should use any form of the N word anyway.

Us White Folks do not use the N.
word.
You are wrong. A lot of white people use the word. I'd even go as far and say that majority of them use all versions of N the word. Especially the people in the South. That area in the US is infested with racist people.

Trophy was the wrong word to use, its like say your stabbing me, then i take the knife off you, i can stab who ever i want, but you cant stab me anymore....
Thats also a bad explanation, its hard to explain, but bottom line, we can say it, you cant.
I know what you mean, its like reclaiming the word, its not gonna be the offensive term it was once used for, its yours not theirs...

Yeh but discrimination has a more powerful and detrimental affect when its minority groups that are being discriminated against and the word was used offensively by white people for a long time, why would any black person be comfortable with it now, its crazy to think they should be?

Well said. This is a ridiculous thread to begin with, where certain peoples lack of understanding is so evident. That word has a weight of history and connotation associated with it that means it shouldn't be used by anyone else. I feel the same way about the word Paddy - to a lesser extent- as it was used to discriminate against us in our history, and would probably lose the head if it were used on me by anyone other than a fellow Irish person.

Cheers man. The lack of understanding saddens me, why arent they teaching this **** in schools? I had the benefit of growing up in one of the most diverse cities in the UK, a family that taught me discrimination is wrong etc, not everyone has that. It should be a major part of the national curriculum from an early age.

So why is it unacceptable for white people to use it, but to some people it is acceptable for black people to use it? Surely if it was that hateful they'd want to rid of the word completely?

Whilst what you're saying is true, the point I'm trying to get across is a word is either offensive or it isn't. If certain groups can use a word, then why can't all groups? Black people forget about the historical context when they use it in a friendly way, so why is it double standards when they can't forget about historical context if a white person is to use it in a friendly way?

Well because the groups using the word arent using it offensively for one and that they can be sure of. But its a difficult one to grasp I'll grant you that. I guess its like taking a word that caused offence and humiliation and turning it on its head, its fighting back and not letting it beat you. Its like if a gay guy calls another gay guy a big "****" in a jokey ironic way, its flippin the negative use of it and taking the hurt and offence out of it. I spose in a way we should be celebrating the fact that young white people see that word as a street term and dont really understand the offence it can cause, but that doesnt disregard it still does offend and I guess it'll be a long time before the negative associations are fully eradicated like

YOu will wxplain it over and over again, until red in the face. THose who insist on wanting to use the word, will pretend they dont understand what youre talking about (they understand perfectly well).

The world is complex, all need to be said. There is problems going round all the time.
If only this whole racism issue stops being an issue thats one less thing to worry about in the world.
Cant everyone go around being black or white and just be proud of it?
I for one would laugh at the fact at being called something to do with my skin colour (food wise), everyone should be allowed to take the mick out of themselves, but words that shouldnt be used are the normaly N word and all that.
A black mate called my white mate "White Trash" surely thats the same thing as a white person calling a black person the N word?

I don't want to use the word, I can't stand it to the point where I won't even type it let alone say it, but I think its double standards if its fine for a black person to say it in a non-offensive way but if a white person uses it in the exact same context, they're racist. Its double standards and as I've already said, ironically racist.
If black people genuinely find it that offensive, then why is it acceptable to use it in a different form?

How do I spread hate and fear? That is taking it a bit far. I have a problems with Religion, not the people. Yes the people make up the Religion and they will follow it but most are ok (yes, even muslims).
