Now in this thread you can post any music you think is Gothic but you have to explain why it is Gothic.

Please don't post any new supposedly "Goth" music but I can't stop anybody.

I'm going to kick things off with Siouxsie And The Banshees' version of Dear Prudence.

I'm unsure as to what constitutes as 'gothic' music. Would the Cure count? :p

Definitely the early stuff, but not so much when Robert Smith gained pop sensibility. I don't think looking goth cuts the mustard Or bands that simply have goth fans.. If that were the case, Marilyn Manson, Black Sabbath, Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails and others could be considered goth at one time or another.

I think a band has to be pretty deliberately goth .

A lot of Goths do listen to some depeche mode. The stuff around Black Celebration and some of Music for the Masses and I'd say a lot of Violator is Goth like and so Songs of Faith and Devotion too.

They lost a lot of that when Alan Wilder left.

Alan Wilder added a lot, I agree, in terms of musicianship and studio work, but Ultra fared well with Tim Simenon's dirty, trip hop production and the inclusion of session musicians. And I love Exciter because it was a breath of fresh air. A more low key, sensual, minimalist electro Mode.

At the end of the day Gore is the primary songwriter and Dave & Anton Corbijn give the band it's image. Either of them three ditching any involvment would have been far worse.

Probably. I still miss the atmospheric sound Alan Wilder added. It was really something.

The recent stuff is more Gore oriented. Some of the recent songs have been something special.
I think you would have to credit Flood in to that as well, who produced Violator and Song's. Him and Wilder were very much a team in studio.

The atmosphere of the live show's on the Devotional tour was incredible, even if the band were falling to pieces behind it all.

The new record is definitely a grower. I hated it at first now I love it. Playing The Angel sounded too harsh.

In Chains is a great opener live. Saw them at Stade De France in June, and again next month in Dublin :hugesmile:.

I'm not a fan of Goth music but I can name you some bands I've heard of.

Dimmu Borgir
Behemoth
Cradle of Filth (They are probably the only black metal band I like)
Marilyn Manson (Not sure but he looks like one)

Cradle of Filth are not black metal... or at least if they are... they are to black metal what Lady Sovereign is to grime.

They're labelled Black Metal as far as I've seen, although for some reason they want to be known as Heavy Funk.

Anyway I'm bumping this. I've been listening to a lot of darkwave and coldwave [darkwave but the miserable people are French] lately. It's beautiful, melodic stuff although I doubt we have many devotees amongst our ranks.

Furthest I've gone towards 'goth' is Marilyn Mansons Golden age of grotesque but that's mainly cos I loved singing 'this is the new ****' when I was a pissed of teen! :joker:

I hated GAOG at the time but considering in retrospect what a coked up clown he has become since then it was probably his last great work.

Antichrist Superstar is still one of the most textured, slickest rock/pop concept albums ever made.
