It's a relic of what we once were. Mother natures security blanket. When we were pre-human we often slept in trees and that jerk you get when you fall in a dream and wake up was a warning to us when we were about to fall off the trees.

It's **** scary, but Stu's reasoning is right.

Sleep paralysis is even worse though, anyone had that? Where you wake up and you can't move a muscle and you feel like someones putting a pillow over your face? You have to eventually snap yourself out of it, but it's extremely scary.

Yep, and it actually only lasts about 1-3 seconds but it feels like hours

Its when your brain wakes up before your body. When you fall into a certain stage of sleep your body goes into temporary paralysis so you don't hurt yourself whilst you're asleep. When sleep paralysis occurs its when your brain hasn't told your body to wake up.

YES! omg. I might not even be fully asleep and just thinking about it, but it'll still happen. It feels real for a split second.

Yeah, I'm usually riding a bike down the same hillish pavement and there's a small pebble which the front wheel hits, and I go flying. Just before my face smashes into the ground I wake up in a fright.

It's funny, I don't even ride a bike.

More twitch than spasm, lol! I've fainted in my dreams twice and I've woke up crying a few times too. I think I woke up laughing once as well!

I always have them when I'm on a bike and crashing into a wall, I wake up just before the impact

and about other dreams I really like ones with people who have died (friends, family etc) but get v annoyed when I wake up or realise in the dream that its not real

I get it a lot. Most of the time it's when I'm dreaming/imagining tripping or falling into a hole.
