I don't take things on the internet to heart but i do favour some members over others by what they say about me.

I think it depends on the person... I think tonight and all the "what do you really think of me" threads are proof that some people are bothered about what's said about them. SOme people are thicker skinned than others... I would imagine that perhaps the younger members will take things more personally... Might be wrong. I, personally couldn't give a rats ass what anybody thinks of me, on here, or otherwise.. :)

Yeah, that inspired the topic really. Some people do get pretty personal to be fair. Especially when they post a pic and people call them fat or whatever.

I, for one, love a good banter with friends etc and enjoy taking the piss out of people and I can take it right back, but I wouldn't say something to somebody that I knew would cause hurt or upset. It's different on a forum as you don't really know anybody and a poorly aimed insult could be somebodys weak spot and cause real hurt..

Yeah that is true. It's hard when you don't know people. I just prefer to abuse the idiotic posts, not the people themselves.

This is an interesting topic. ;)

I'd like to say that I'm above getting upset by what people say against me here, but tbh, sometimes it does get me all rattled up etc.
It's almost worse when you get critiscm on a board/forum if you know what I mean. You're being judged on your ideas and words, which are important to me etc.

Usually though, I do take it with a pinch of salt.
:)

Yay!

I would say that people do seek approval on forums becuase of exactly that, you are being judged on your ideas and words. And everyone would like their ideas to be liked and excepted and thought of as good etc.

:)

This.

It feels nice when someone appreciates a good post you make, and I enjoy entertaining people, but at the end of the day this is just a forum. People who take things to heart or worry about what other think must have a pretty bog standard genuine social life.

I think people who genuinely seek approval on forums are people who can't find it elsewhere, be it in school, work w/e, if they don't fit in or get on well with those around them in r/l, they come to a forum where there are lots of close knits groups of friends nand they immediately want to be accepted and taken in because its something their real life lacks. I would say a high amount of TiBB's regulars, particularly young members have or are being bullied which is why the seek so much solace in TiBB.

in my opinion anyway, I'm no psychologist.

I have often thought that. And wondered if it's a place for misfits as such. But you get regular people on here too. Most people don't give alot away so it's hard to tell. But yeah, some do stand out and seem to long to be accepted in some form or other.

I also think TiBB in particular draws them in due to Big Brother having quite a large female and gay following, there are a lot of young guys on here who are clearly going through some phase of realising their sexuality and of course we all know, that gays aren't exactly accepted in young teens which would result in them being bullied.

as opposed to say, a music forum, where the subject is so vague that there's a huge mix of members, young and old, straight and gay, male and female, ect.

that was clearly not my point. I mentioned that BB had a large female gay and female following, so naturally a BB related forum is going to have a large female and gay percentage. That's not to imply that it only attracts girls and gays.

You should get an Oscar or something for that. Hit the nail on the head there!

I think people seek approval on forums because they aren't satisfied with the approval they get in their every day lives. That's not necessarily the same thing as getting no approval; some people will never get enough  but yeah, Gary's right IMO.

Definitely something in that, and I think a lot of people spam the forum and are actively rude when not necessary (e.g. trolls signing up to slag people off) because they can't do it in real life.

Beastie
10-11-2009, 01:07 PM
Maybe members seek approval after joining Tibb, like after being on a few months what impact they have made on the forums, and if they feel they are being "misjudged" then they want to win back some approval?

I've been here for almost 4 years and with all the arguments I had, if it upset me then I'd have left a while ago due to all the insults thrown to each other.
It's no big deal to be honest.

But you can meet new nice people too and it's funny I think. Hearing compliments is always nice so I'll take them with pleasure.
