It's not that I don't like Rihanna (but I'm not a big fan either) but I think something is wrong with her, something just doesn't match. There is always something I find awful or embarrassing about the girl, not necessarily the song tho (Russian Roulette is rather good).
Now, the video is kinda amateur, nothing new about it, she hasn't improved a lot to be honest. Yes, she has her own style but music wise, she's stuck in the mall.

Vocally wise, no. I see a makeover for sure (drastic hair, tatoos...) but as far as music is concerned, nothing to me screams awesome nor improvement.
Fair enough, she has potential, but compared to Lady Gaga who is rather new on the market but managed to improve her standards, Rihanna hasn't made any efforts.

Rihanna is one of the few artists lately who has shown true progression as an artist. Most (like Gaga) release new material similar to their previous, which proves they can't take risks because their known for one particular style. What I love about Rihanna is with each album she evolves. Rated R could have easily been a GGGB knock-off, but instead she comes back dark and releases a ballad as a first single (each of her previous first singles have been club bangers). This is what builds iconic status as an artist, when you continually shock people with what you're offering and tbh, I ever expected this route from Rihanna but I love it. She's truly upped her game and is taking names.

With Gaga though she's only had two albums as of yet to Rihanna's four. Remember Rihanna's first two albums were extremely similar it wasn't until the third album when she went into a more electro R'n'B style and then obviously a slight rock tinged sound for her fourth. From what I heard of Gaga's new songs there is a difference between her albums. The newer songs have a much darker edge to them.
