I got smacked properly and A LOT all the way up to 3 years ago or something!
It's not necessarily bad but it's not necessarily necessary either. Learn to control your kids verbally. Smacking reminds me of chavs on the street who drag and smack the kids around because they never bothered taking the time to control or teach them.
In fact, it probably just aggravates the kid even more anyway.

Yeah, this is the way I feel about it too. I wouldn't want my kids to be afraid that I'd physically hurt them. There are other ways I think. You can't smack an adult when they're bold(unfortunately) so why can you smack a little person??

A smack by a parent who is not losing their temper and is designed to shock rather than hurt is a good way to correct bad behaviour.
Whacking a kid because he/she has wound you up is a no no and probably makes up 90% of smacks

I've never seen a "cotrolled" smack!! It's always people who are angry with their kids

It's wrong. They're children,it's horrible to hit a little child, there are other ways of disciplining.

it can happen, if you find you 3 year old trying to insert a screwdriver into a socket for example you will not be angry you will be scared and you want to make the scolding impactful so that it NEVER happens again..

Yeah, I suppose you're right but my hubby shouting is scarier than a smack lol

I got a bare bum smacking for going on some garage roofs when i was 4 and so far I have never gone on a garage roof again.
so that is 1 in the "for box"
however as an adult I have spent £30,000 on dominatrixes so that is "one against"

What salvation army and dominatrixes all in the 'breathe' - somewhat of a contradiction don't you think?

Niamh, i knew my question affected you ;)
i think some kids deserve a smack across the bum or head from time to time
too many spoiled kids about these days who are rude and have no manners

Yeah, it made me think alright Steve!! Yes, there are kids like that but thats more to do with the way their parents are rather than them not being smacked. I don't smack my kids and they're very well-behaved and polite!!

i'm not saying smack your children outright but if they are rude and disrespectful to Elders give 'em a clip around the ear.
Most parents let their Kids away with murder these days its disgraceful

Not always possible though ie a stressed mum out shopping in the local supermarket - child plays up - can't stick them on the naughty step - talking to them may not work - especially if mum is embarrassed and stressed - small tap on the leg is most practical.

Hitting someone so small and defencless just doesn't feel right to me. I'd feckin' kill someone if they laid a hand on one of my kids so why on earth would I do it to them myself?

true, kids can be little horrors at times
i've seen mums go crazy and smack their kids crazy
it was frightening

its a tough job but some mums aren't probably as easy going as you Niamh
and a smack is a easy way out of it

A little smack on the back of the legs or the bum is fine.
Smack my puppy when he tries to bite like visciously not just playing.
It works (obviously i donthi him hard)

until he gets big and bites you in the neck :joker:
dogs have to be trained so a smack is needed
where you smacked as a kid Ben/

No, im saying you show discipline the same way.
You change your tone of voice, but dont shout.
And you give them a little tap and they know.

No you don't. Dogs are dogs and children are children.
The whole 'giving them a little tap' thing too is ludicrously misguided. If your not actually going to hurt your children, what's the point in slapping them? I know that sounds rather odd, but really, what good does it do if the child actually knows that there really isn't any actual threat of violence?
It will just aggravate the kid and turn the little thing into an even more temperamental brat, who will more than likely hit out at you in the future because that's the way it was raised!

Obviously there are a lot of differences but the ones i named..
Thing is i dont have a kid so i woudlnt really know. But if i was to have one now thats how id do it.
I was smacked as a child and i wasnt a brat i just shut up when it happened.
and id never hit my parents and same with my brother and counsins and most of my friends so that theory of that they are more likely to hit you goes out the window.

Yes, but I don't think you weren't a brat just because of being smacked. You probably weren't a brat because you had parents who disciplined you and I'm sure if they had choosen to discipline you a different way, that probably would have worked equally as well!

Maybe so we will never know...
I believe its still a thing you should be able to do if you choose to.
I think it helped towards me not being a little brat.

Err no, it's pretty much a parental fact of life. One instance involving your own personal life can't disprove a whole theory .

You never know though you might change your mind about the smacking thing when you actually have your own child. They look to you for protection and are so defencless
