View Full Version : Poor spelling: an indication of poor education?

Thought this was interesting, although the thread is gone obviously... What do you think?

I think good spelling shows that you've been well educated, it reflects better on a person if they have good spelling and grammar.

I concur.

Obviously there are exceptions, such as dyslexics.

But aside from that, I'd say poor grammar/spelling does indicate poor education. After all, reading and writing are core skills in any education system.

There's an obvious difference between typos and stupidity, so yes. :]

Ah but intelligence can be measured in many way. Spelling is only one way of measuring it. That why I don't really think how well you do at school shows how intelligent you are either.

And there's also an obvious difference between 'typing fast' or using shortcuts and stupidity.

You could be good at spelling and grammar but not good at anything else.

Not particularly, no.

I think it's knowledge of the subject you're discussing, and how you put your opinion across that indicates how well educated you are.

It certainly enhances communication. Bad spelling often means you have to re-read things to take-in what they are saying! It probably does reflect a certain level of education - but not necessarily level of intelligence!

'Intelligence' isn't the subject matter though Joe. Education is.

The poor spelling being an indicator of being poorly educated.

You can be poorly educated and still be intelligent.

Yeah, it might relfect better on the person, but does not mean they are a better person or anything.

I don't have the best spelling and was still educated well, same as Patrick.

Oh I was on the television for spelling lmao!
But I think bad spelling either says that someone hasn't been educated properly or hasn't allowed themselves to be.

I think it can be but it's not a general rule, I'm quite a good speller but you wouldn't know on here since I type like an enraged ape. Text talk is more of a sign I think if it's used commonly outside of texts.

Good grammar means you are literate, not necessarily educated.

I'm unsure about this one really. Obviously it's a good indication as to the level of literacy that a person has attained, but for me content is far more important than spelling, which is perfectly illustrated on this forum where even the most articulate and grammatically perfect of responses contain such absolute verbal diarrhoea.

OF course it is. But a lot of people these days, don't bother with spelling, especially online. I have always been a good speller, when it comes to work, school etc. BUt I get real sloppy online, and I assume a lot of people do as well.
I think it helps when English is your second language, because then, you learn most of the basics in school. Whereas the people that have English as a first language, mainly learn how to speak English at home of course. SO Strangely, I can spell better than most people who were born in English.

Yeah, with the exception of (REAL cases of) dyslexia and learning difficulties, it probably shows that either you're uneducated, of low intellect or worst of all you are a chav who thinks reading and writing is for mugs and probably donate to the Plain English Campaign.

Obviously there is more to intelligence than intellect, but I despair at the fact that there are an increasing number of people who become angry or indignant at any criticism of their spelling or grammar and how you are labelled a pedant for pointing these things out. To think it is now acceptable for BBC TV presenters to use phrases like "more better than" to say nothing of terrible radio presenters like Chris Moyles.

By the way, did you know that the literacy rate in this country is declining?

It is not a suprise. I think I saw a documentary on it. Kids don't want to learn these days, it's like Britain is becoming stupider. In some inner city areas, you have kids Grand Parents that have never even worked, so what chance do they have?

As long as you try your best that is all that matters. Most people are a bit slack on the internet but as long as you can actually read what they are saying then that is okay. Nitpicking at little grammar and spelling mistakes is silly on the computer.

Lol there are some stupid people, well not very clever people who do work. There are some "educated" people who will not take a job after they finish university because they feel it is beneath them. If a person is willing to do ANYTHING, even if they are not educated, it says more about them really.

Oh yeah, then well education is not everything. Some people may want to start an apprenticeship, a hands on job when they are 16, work in the trade! Well that has been going on for years like when our grandparents, well not all grandparents but men and that worked down the pit!

Oh sorry lol. Well all I can say is it is not just SOME chavs that don't want to do anything, the same goes for educated people because SOME of them go through university life, leave and then well don't want a job, mainly because they think it is beneath them.

I suppose we are in the recession and all, therefore for most people we have to grab a job opportunity with 2 hands if we have not already got one. I think youth clubs and that should be brought back to get kids off the streets who may end up in underage drinking, knife and gun crime! However yet again the government will not be bothered to fund any money for youth clubs which I think could help the nation quite a bit.

I'm a lot more tolerant on the Internet, if only for the fact that I have a bad habit of making typing mistakes myself and my punctuation is sloppy from time to time. Besides, forums are usually intended for informal banter anyway, so it shouldn't be an issue. It all depends on context for me. I cringe when people use the word 'then' in place of the preposition 'than' when the rest of their post is grammatically perfect with no spelling mistakes.

Yeah, i've noticed youth clubs have pretty much gone these days. And yes, people with degrees are taking the lower paid jobs, so plenty of people out of work. But that does not mean alot of people don't have the 'take what you can get' attitude, no matter where they come from. I know a few myself.

Like I said before, content is far more important to me than style or grammatically correct sentences. There's alot of morons out there with degrees and masters.

Here's an example for ya.....

I believe spelling and grammar are the result of good or bad school. I went to an amazing school, I don't understand how it is so good, almost every child is completely able to read at 5, some at 4. My nephew who is 4 has been attending the school for 3 months and is already spelling and reading simple words. My niece goes to the school and had an age 9 reading level when she was 5. I have two cousins in a different school who are 8 and 9 and are only learning to read properly now. I am also a spelling and grammar nazi but restrain myself online because there are more important things than spelling to worry about in the world :D
I must admit I had some difficulty with punctuation until the age of 14 but I'm fine now!
Sorry about the unnecessarily big essay!

I see no relation what so ever with the ability to spell correctly or not and that of intelligence.

Poor spelling can result for many reasons......Poor education, not practicing enough or just a lazy student that can't be bothered.

What matters is the ability to make one self understood....

Intelligence isn't so much what you know or how quick you can learn........Intelligence is to know what to do with what you know no matter how little that may be.......That's why some poorly educated individuals can become millionairs while some rich highly educated so and so are stupid enough to lose any wealth they have strived for.....
