X Factor’s Joe trailing behind in Christmas single sales
Joe McElderry faces a battle for the number one spot in the charts this Christmas, with a rival single currently selling more copies.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Joe McElderry is facing some stiff competition for the number one spot this Christmas, with a rival single selling ten copies to one of his at some retailers.
The 18-year-old singer’s version of the winner’s single, The Climb, has been available to download from midnight on Sunday – but it is trailing behind Rage Against the Machine’s song Killing in the Name.
The single, which was released in 1992, has become hugely popular again after a Facebook group was set up urging people to buy the single to stop the X Factor song hitting the top spot again.
There is believed to be around a 10 per cent margin in sales between the two singles after Sunday and Monday. But HMV has reported selling 10 to one yesterday in favour of Killing in the Name - although sales tended to have been skewed towards specialist music fans.
However, it’s not all doom and gloom for Joe – once the CD version of Joe’s single is released in the shops it is expected to take the lead position.
The Official Charts Company said this is "the fiercest battle for years" for a single to hit the coveted Christmas number one spot.
Managing director of the company, Martin Talbot added: "This is shaping up to be a very exciting battle between two different records which have captured the nation's imagination.
"But, although Rage Against The Machine have started off in front, according to our initial sales estimates, there is no doubt that this tussle is far from over."
Meanwhile, it was revealed yesterday that a price war has erupted after Amazon and Tesco sold downloads of The Climb for just 29p. Play.com is charging 67p, while 7digital.com, which is being plugged by X Factor bosses, are selling the single for 99p.
Claims had been made that downloads priced at less than 40p would not qualify in the charts, but a spokeswoman for the Official Charts Company said this was untrue and that retailers are free to carry out any promotions. Ass long as the downloads meet all chart rules they will still be counted in the charts.
Joe will be launching the CD release of his single in his home town of South Shields, at HMV on King Street, and will be signing singles for up to 500 fans from 4pm onwards.
This will change after weds... when the CD's hit shops.

What you actually said was, and I quote "I think he's bisexual myself but I'm not going to call him a liar (even if he is being told to cover up), so I'll believe him." Clearly implying that you still think he is bisexual - even though he has said he is straight!

I meant thought, didn't realise I had made a typo. Obviously you're not going to believe that judging by your recent posts though, so what different does it make.
I've said that I believe he's straight, what more do you want? A ****ing carnival procession with me singing his praises because he's come out as straight?

And for the record - what gives you the right to imply someone may be bisexual! And don't hide behind your comments that you said you believed him - as you clearly expressed your doubts to his declaration that he is not! Maybe being gay or bisexual is not a big thing for you - but it might be for him - he may be mortified by such remarks - you don't know! Such remarks could potentially be very hurtful to him! He entered a singing competition - that doesn't make him fair game for all and any wild accusation people may choose to levy at him.

Posting on a forum which has what, 10,000 members? Is publicly exposing him?
You seem to be acting as if I've killed someone. When you take into account that there are far more homophobes who simply hate him for his 'assumed sexuality', I think you'll find that I've done no wrong by expressing my opinion on his sexuality in a fair, but not insulting way. I'd imagine Joe is more concerned about the people who hate him because of all of this, not the people who are just merely wondering what his sexuality is!

I don't actually want either of them to be #1 for Christmas.
Would much rather it be a Christmas song personally! George Michael's December Song is gorgeous. <3
Yep, me too but RATM will have to do right now.

That's how thick he knows the public are - he doesn't even get a writer to produce a new song. lol. It's staggering really when you think about it.

Oh, you don't get it do you? Simon has you right where he wants and you wont know it until in about 10 years and you'll laugh about how gullible you were while Simon is sipping Martini's on his own island with his own harem, laughing at how stupid and easily controlled the British population are.
Thanks for pretty much insulting me.
Of course I get it. The control Simon has over the UK charts is unbelievable, and bad - there's no denying that. I never once said that I liked his control over the charts, just that you don't really have any right to moan unless you're going to come up with an alternative. It's as simple as that.
Yes it's an appauling site when all you see is XF acts and guests everywhere in the Top 40, but what do you or other people intend to do about it?

I didn't really insult you so don't try to be a victim here. Just stating that you're playing right into his hands, which is obviously the case and you're just emphasizing that point.
There's always other options in life if you look hard enough for them..... George Michael has released a wonderful Xmas record but X Factor is going to win with a charmless cover version.

Fair enough.
That's also a fair point, but as I said, what do you intend to do to get this George Michael track to Christmas #1?
It's no use complaining about it unless you're willing to offer some constructive and large scale input.

It's really not. He does not write his own songs or music. He is the product of a squeaky clean 'singing' competition, he sings what he is told to sing, says what he is told to say. He is a puppet, that is not an artist, and that is not music.

But questioning his sexuality is what has created those homophobes in the first place! You may not have meant it to be insulting - but to suggest that someone is gay/bisexual when they have never stated that they are - is insulting! If he isn't - then it is untrue. If he is - then he clearly doesn't want to divulge that to the rest of the world. And it is no one else's place to do so.
Personally - I don't believe for one minute that he is - and it has bugger all to do with his singing. Why do people have to get so personal?

To be fair - he has to be those things at the moment - to win the competition and to fulfill his contract. He is only 18 - in time, if he becomes an established singer - he will be in more of a position to dictate his own terms and produce his own style of music.

Of course it's not. Homophobes are scared of homosexual people because it's not seen as the 'normal' thing to do, and if they are seen to be supporting them - they think they'll be looked down upon. They're narrow minded and ignorant people. It's got nothing to do with questioning peoples sexuality, that's just showing interest (whether good or bad). All part of human nature.
I'll accept your opinion that it is insulting then. I admit, I was quick to judge, but as I have said it's part of human nature, and that's also why people get so personal.

Well as I've said, I was quick to judge and yes it's wrong. But it's human nature and something that will come naturally to the majority of people - whether you'll admit it or not.

Give him chance! Many people have come from singing competitions and now release their own material. This is him making his entrance into the business, don't try and assume what he is going to make in the future.

Well it's the fact he is ruining another X Mas number 1 that is most annoying. He himself should take a stand but of course he won't he can see the £££, and lets face it, the way he comes across, I think he will just go with whatever the record company throws at him. He has nothing that stands out about him at all.

Rage extend lead in singles chart
10:26 | Wednesday December 16, 2009
By Ben Cardew
The battle for the Christmas number one slot continues to heat up, with Rage Against The Machine’s Killing In The Name extending its lead over Joe McElderry’s The Climb.
According to sales figures from the Official Charts Company yesterday, the American band’s 1993 hit had opened up a lead of about 10% over The Climb, the debut single from X Factor winner McElderry, after two days of sales.
OCC figures today show that Killing In The Name has now extended that lead to around 60%, selling another 92,000 copies yesterday to bring its total for the week so far to more than 175,000.
The Climb has sold around 110,000 copies so far but is expected to receive a massive boost today when the CD single goes on general sale around the country.
While the singles market is now overwhelmingly made up of download sales, X Factor Christmas singles traditionally sell strongly on CD.
