View Full Version : Joe or RATM?

Who would you rather have as 2009's Christmas number 1, Joe McElderry with The Climb, or Rage Against The Machine with Killing in the Name?

Thought Id make a poll as it seems to be a red hot discussion

No offence to Joe or anything but I'd rather see a non-X Factor number one for a change. They have dominated the xmas charts for several years. About time someone else got a shot at number 1 even if it's only for 1 week.

A Christmas no.1 should be a Christmas song, but as I hate the X Factor and hate Miley Cyrus, I voted RATM.

NO
Because its NOT Fair, if Joe goes to #1 which he will, it will be because he was voted the winner of Britains most famous talent show.

Why the hell should these idiots go to #1 with an old song, just because they woke up one day and decided they wanted more money.

Bitter, and I for one would rather see an XF Act or a complete diffrent artist being Christmas #1 for the right reasons than these selfish old bastards.

I only gave my opinion and I respect your opinion too.

However, 95% of all the X Factor first singles are all covers. So technically THEY are also releasing old songs too only sung by a different artist. The song chosen by the Facebook group founders probably wasn't a great choice and would have been better if as Enid said it was an actual Xmas song but oh well.

Band Aid 1984 - Various
Happy Xmas (war is over) - John and Yoko
Fairy tale of new york - Pogues
I believe in father christmas - Greg Lake
Merry Christmas everyone - Slade

Any of them.
Should be one of them brought back, not some random guy on facebook who likes rock and just decides a rock song should be christmas number 1.

To be honest I don't care, the Christmas number 1 has never been an award for being musically superior.

It looks pretty neck and neck in here. :)
Undoubtedly I prefer Joe. I just think RATM being closed to #1, is manufactured! Its not real. HOwever you feel about the "xfactor machine", I think it has happened naturally. The first or second singles of xfactor, didnt get to #1. But after that, they did, because the show was embraced and loved by a lot of people in the UK, and I am one of them. SO I think its only natural, that the xfactor gets the christmas #1. I hate it, that people always try to tear down a popular show, and this campaign, is the first step towards that1

Thanks for the info danda. I didnt know that! :)

I just dont want to see the show lose popularity, and get cancelled, because all of a sudden it becomes "cool", to hate on the xfactor single. Just like what happen with BB. Because I know pretty much eveyone on this site, like BB, or they wouldnt even be here.

But thats whats gonna happen, if people keep supporting these "Haterade" campaigns. :)

I would be if it was Jedward or someone equally untalented! I know what you are saying - there is a lot I don't like about the show - including lining Mr Cowells pockets - but I like Joe and would like to see him do well. The record becoming No. 1 won't make a lot of difference to his already very deep pockets. Yup I remember the days when we used to think "what will be xmas no.1 this year" but nowadays whoever wins X Factor is pretty much guarenteed a number 1 at Christmas with a cover of a non-xmas song. Most winners seem to vanish after a year (most notable exception of this is Leona Lewis who is still big).

Yes, but someone better could always replace it, channels are quite good at making you forget other programmes existed. It's not spoiling the enjoyment of anyone, it's stopping X Factor killing the music industry, which surely you can agree with?

I agree with the whole 'we know its going to be the XF winner as xmas no.1' and the fact it is not exciting to wonder who'll get it and that the single isnt even a xmas song.

I don't think it is killing the music industry, it is just changing it.

RATM will just spend the money they get from this on drugs probably, if it was Peter Kay's Animated All Star Band, then at least people would know they were helping someone.

Also I'm sure a lot of stars and groups got their breaks on talent shows, even minor local ones, it seems that because xfactor is a massive talent show that some people object to it.

Anyway, I don't really care about xfactor always getting the xmas number one. And I'm sure it will change one year.

It's not always, but the last few years. And yes, it's not the ideal song, but saying they will spend all the money on drugs? Come on. And it is changing the music industry for the worse!!! People do not appreciate real bands or atrists these days, they like they shiny ones they see on X Factor. Claudia, you are a lover or music, and I know you don't want to see them take over. I can't believe how much the British public has got into this idea, yes there is entertainment, but why let it spoil talents that could have been? Because I bet alot of unfound talent has been trodden on, cos of the X Factor empire.

I apologise for the drug comment, it was wrong.

I do love a lot music, as many on this forum do. But I think the xfactor is just another form of pop, still there is great indie music being made and great artists being signed.

It is possible that xfactor is not great for helping new talent, I don't know enough about it really, but it is also possible that the next generation of singers will have been inspired by xfactor.

That is the thing, I don't mind them being inspired by X Factor, it is just what X Factor has become!!! Sending shiney new artists out, so the nuclear family can eat them up, you know what it is about. It is not what we want in music, if that it is what it has become then it is a real shame and you know it.

Why did Cowell choose a Miley Cyrus song thats already been released this year? And what a pile of cack it is.Last year Cowell decided to do somethin a bit classier as Peter Kaye's "Britians Got The Pop Factor" show ripped the piss outta those horrible talent show songs. Now he's returned to the formula of having a journey etc. with this saccharin crap.If you like it,I pity you.

Joe can sing anything and make anything sound good! For me - it has much more to do with his voice - than the song itself!

I thought we went over this a dozens of times before. It's such a tired non-argument. How on earth would the campaign have worked if everybody bought a different single? It was necessary to do it the way it was done.

Maybe if they picked a song that was a) christmassy and b) more likable then it would work

Its just an ironic song for the campaign, plus its actually worse than Joes

Agreed.

Everyone just buys a song most people dont even like because they want to beat x factor.

But joes song is a bit better and more christmassy sounding, so i would prefer it getting number 1.
Makes me want to buy joes single just to help it get number 1 now.

Would be such a **** christmas number 1, a old not very good song.

Fairytale of new york - the Pogues is 18th in the chart
All i want for christmas - Mariah carey is 17th in the chart
Last christmas - Wham is 39th in the chart.

3 christmas songs already charted last week, and everyone listens to some (probable) loser on face book trying to get a poor rock song to number one..

Think next year i might start it before this bloke.

He's only a few thousand behind now, He'll be number 1 by tommorow. I do feel a little bad for Joe as he's a nice chap but It's Simon's fault, If he changed things up once in a while people wouldn't be so tired of the X Factor getting Christmas Number 1.

Yeah, It's been very interesting to watch unfold.

Next year he should pick a different song for each finalist which suits their style instead of having one generic song, Good talent show songs can be done look at 'Sound of the Underground'. Simon's just been lazy, if the song was decent there would not be as much hate for the X Factor.

That's true actually, and that's a much better idea. That's my Goal was a good song I think and I didn't know it either, I mean Miley Cyrus only released the Climb herself this year, it's pure laziness on Simons part

It's not WHAT HAPPENS. The charts dont have scripts sweetie. Anything can happen. The X-Factor does not automatically deserve to have #1.

But it always happens. Sweetie? wtf.. go away if your going to start calling me sweetie. Patronising people doesn't get your point across any clearer.

No body is wrong. Its become a generic thing now for the X Factor winner to be Xmas No.1 However its all down to the public and if RATM get to No.1 thats purely because of the public.

It would be nice if they rather than almost always releasing a cover for xmas write a new song (possibly individual or generic whichever is easier). Originality in the songs never hurts.
