Blondie is one of my all time favourite bands. Debbie Harry has an amazing voice. Tracks like Shayla, Fade away and radiate, Dreaming & Union city blue, to name but a few, are classic Blondie at their best. It all sort of went wrong after AutoAmerican though.

MrGaryy
17-12-2009, 10:02 PM
Blondie are one of the most revolutionary bands of all the time, their music and fashion was miles ahead of it's time. Debbie Harrie is one of the most iconic figures of her time and a fashion revolutionary. Their music continues to live on, remaining timeless.

You're actually saying that Blondie have had more of a lasting impact in popular music than the Beatles, and with a straight face?

MrGaryy

You're actually saying that Blondie have had more of a lasting impact in popular music than the Beatles, and with a straight face?

hmm, I can't seem to recall saying that at all, funnily enough? I'm saying that while you maybe be in the vast majority who feel the need to hail them as some sort of god's, there are those, like myself, you believe they simply a product of their time and had it not been them, it would have been somebody else.

Mrluvaluva
17-12-2009, 10:20 PM
Everyone has different tastes. I have loads of Blondie stuff but hardly any Beatles. They are not the be all and end all of music. Blondie have been hugely influential in their own right and their music remains timeless.

LemonJam

Beatles having a larger legacy doesn't make them better, just more popular and henceforth more influential. It's all down to taste.

Better or not is a matter of opinion.

I voted Beatles btw :p

no actually I think you'll find I didn't mention Blondie what so ever. I just pointed out that not everyone thinks the Beatles are what music is about hence why those people will obviously vote Blondie. and - shock horror - some people actually prefer Blondie.

Plastic Letters is my favourite Blondie album. Yes there were others like them, but Blondie stood out from the rest and have withstood the test of time. So are you saying there were no other bands similar to The Beatles at the time they were around?

Not really no. The Beatles were head and shoulders above everybody else at that particular time, through the variety and wild experimentation found within their music. The were really unlike anyone else at that time and they marked a change in what was possible in popular music, with so many bands owing a debt of gratitude towards them. They gave newer bands the ticket to really open up and try anything.

Blondie were just a part of the new wave and punk bands that were coming out at that particular time and, although they're excellent musicians and had a wonderful lead singer, I don't think you can place them anywhere near The Beatles. And in any case, where the feck are the New York Dolls, Talking Heads, The Ramones, Human League etc etc? Oh, and Roxy Music. They were all of the same ilk as Blondie and many are, in my opion anyway, better.

Shaun
17-12-2009, 10:54 PM
A little look at the bands they've destroyed along the way...

Blondie: Sex Pistols, Iron Maiden, UB40, Led Zeppelin, Bee Gees, ABBA, Muse, The Cure

Beatles: T. Rex, blink-182, Motorhead, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Nirvana, Oasis, Queen, The Who

I personally do not rate The Beatles. I don't really like their music. I much prefer some of the other bands who were around at that time, and had it been my era, I'm pretty sure I'd have been listening to some of the "flower power" bands who were around.

Blondie were punk/new wave. The Human League were a totally different kettle of fish. They were an electronic band who did not use guitars. Early tracks of theirs such as The dignity of labour (parts 1-4)/Being boiled/Introducing were a completely different scene and they were at the forefront of that movement. They are pioneers in their own field as were Blondie.

Yes, that's why he didn't really respond to my statement concerning The Beatles or the spate of bands very similar to Blondie who were out at the same time as them. Hey, Blondie are a great band but I was just reacting to people saying that they are hugely original and influential, which I can't really see when you put them up against someone like The Beatles. Oh, and of course the Beatles albums speak for themselves anyway.

Sorry I was not aware there was a stipulus on what I had to comment upon? I am quite aware that Blondie used synthesizers but it was a totally different kind of music when compared to the early Human League. Blondie emerged out of that New York CBGB's scene that was influenced by British punk rock. The Human League were part of the Northern post punk electronic industrial movement with the likes of Fad Gadget, Cabaret Voltaire, Depeche Mode etc. Blondie were not unique, but were one of the best groups of their time on that scene. While I uphold the fact that The Beatles were a brilliant and heavily influential band, and still are today, they are not at the top of everyones list.

Because to most, preferences are based on a preconceived set of thoughts on both parties [blondie and the beatles in this case] - I'm not asking you to go into a huge detailed debate on it, but when you casually come in here and moan about 'not being entitled to have an opinion' because some, who actually have the patience and tenacity to REASON their arguments, disagree with you, it makes you look like a child throwing the dummy out of the pram.

hahaha okay. I wasn't moaning about me not being able to have an opinion, just at the fact people had to explain themselves the way they did, was quite interesting. (I wasn't actually the only person to "casually moan" either).
