He'll probably stay there for a week or two more as well, I don't think there's any single releases that could best him for a few weeks that. Perhaps Alexandra.

Finally.

"Broken Heels" could go to number 1, it's already 23 in UK and not released till 11th January. Top 5, definately anyway.

Christmas #1 is a cultural and historical corner of music history. The same thing does not happen with last #1 of the decade. I don't know how else to put it to you. Rage will be remembered for getting Xmas #1 far more than Joe will be remembered for getting the last #1 of the decade.

MarkWaldorf
27-12-2009, 11:40 PM
then well done to rage. personally, i'm glad he got a number one but having the last number one of the decade seems more special. and right, the xmas number one is a historical corner when everyone knows what artist gets it each year.

To be honest, RATM will be remembered for only ever getting that far up the uk charts because of an anti-XF campaign.

It's a shame they won't really be remembered for anything specific they actually achieved.

Christmas No#1 = a cornerstone of musical history? Not any more it isn't. And it was hanging on by a thread with Bob the Builder, Cliff Richard and Leon Jackson...

Now it's just the one week of the year where a collective of drunks go 'LETS DO THIS'

Oh that x factor kid.

idk, some kid who won the biggest talent show in the uk with 6 million votes and more than double the person in second place. oh yeah, he also has the 3rd best selling single of the year after 2 weeks of sales.

Nothing wrong with that. It was a proper daft student moment. The last Xmas #1 of the decade was an angry, almost 20 year old rap metal track. Hillarious. And a very cool if cliched **** you to the man [Simon Cowell in this case]. Not to mention the most interesting chart race in years. I'm personally proud that this decade gave us a moment of the public fighting back in such a huge way through the medium of a Facebook group. Typical noughties and a telling sign of the unheard majority who can't stand the X-Factor and co.

It's a shame they won't really be remembered for anything specific they actually achieved.
What about being a ****ing good band? They were legendary a month ago. Nothing has changed because of this.

Legendary? In your eyes maybe. I'm not taking anything away from what they do, but the fact remains, they were 'little-known' before this campaign, and will be 'little-known' again very soon.

The christmas #1 is remembered. I never said it was for good reason, but it is remembered.

They are regarded as legendary within rock music circles. I never said anybody has to regard them as legendary, I was merely refuting your notion that they won't be remembered for anything other than this campaign, which is pure horseshit.

Little known? Are we on the same planet here? They are not mainstream celebrities, sure, beause they are not a mainstream band, but to call them little known is pure and utter farce, man.

lily.
28-12-2009, 12:12 AM
It's not farce. In the mainstream.. amongst the usual record buying public.. they are little-known.

I know who they are, but I'm 35 years old..

But the mainstream, record buying public are not the only large group around. Rage are still extremely well known, just in different circles. And different circles do exist. That was one of the points of this campaign. The silent majority spoke up at last, and look what happened.

You simply can't say in such general terms that Rage Against The Machine are not well known. They have sold millions. They are very well known. Just not in the current mainstream. And saying it's a shame they won't be remembered for anything else other than this just sounds like plain old biterness methinks.

Then I'll rephrase... RATM will only be remembered for this by the mainstream.

Ah fair enough. No doubt, I agree with ya, they will be remembered by the mainstream years from now as that angry band that stole the #1.

But then again I think they have built up a big enough legacy to be shielded from being regarded as something as cheap as a one hit wonder.

And even if they are remembered for just this, I don't think it will be in a bad way. Most press has been either staunchly positive or whimsically 'well let's go along with this' about it all.

And hey, Rage will be remembered long after Joe's musical legacy has vanished. That? That I will bet my house on.

Stacey.
28-12-2009, 12:27 AM
nahh, i think Joe will still be doing well in a few years time :)

More than double would mean Joe had at least 66% of the vote which he didn't, and Olly gained more votes on the Sunday than Joe did

Most people probably won't even realise he's at number 1 because noone cares about the charts. It'll probably be a common thought that he never made it
