A Neil Young track that I absolutely adore, which was written in response to the murders committed by Charles Manson and his followers - Young knew Manson personally, and had invited him to his ranch on a couple of occassions.

Young knew Manson???? wow
Oh yeah, sure Manson was fairly well known at that stage because he was trying to be a singer/songwriter and led a bohemian type lifestyle. He took advantage of the peace, love and harmony that was going on during the 60's in California to break free from his criminal past and amass a group of young and naive followers, most usually women. When his attempts at becoming famous fell through he became increasingly disillusioned and attached himself more and more to drugs and his followers, feeding them all his nonsense and paranoid delusions which they readily accepted. Very interesting case.

Yeah indeed, it's kinda freaky when you see those girls walking up the corridor during the trial singing, just something so weird and sinister about it. So brainwashed.

Yep, mental stuff but he was a very manipulative and cunning individual. The mad thing is that Young didn't mind him whenever their paths crossed.... he knew he was a bit on the edge but I'm sure he never thought that he'd lose it altogether. The murders brought an end to the free loving 60's though, that's for sure.

Yeah indeed, everyone was amazed at how Manson could have such power over people, he was not the stereotypical charismatic cult leader as you expect

What does old have to do with anything though? In your eyes it automatically means that you're a target for ridicule? Strange stuff.

Nah, he really was a strange fella with a powerful force within him. I suppose people were attracted to that kind of energy.

I guess, he had a pretty messed up childhood too, so not suprising where the ego and assurance of self worth came from

Have to post this fantastic live performance because it amazed me how much power and beauty they could capture with such a delicate and quiet song. Neil still has it, no doubt about it.

It's mad how things work out. Two of my fav acts of all time and up until recently I didn't realise that Thom Yorke adores Neil Young's music, to the extent where Radiohead play some of his stuff on tour.
