Twilight what you need to do is change for good your eating habits. Increase fresh food intake. Shop at the edges of supermarkets.

Only eat at mealtimes and increase you exercise. This way you can continue to live in a normal way and stop focussing on food.

My boyfriend often swims and used to go to the Gym a lot, and he usually ate well too, but his weight gain is generally down to a slow metabolism (+his lack of resistence to a beer lol).

He's gone on a major diet for the new year though, eating extremely healthily, limiting himself to one meal/takeaway a month and currently on an abstinence to alcohol.

I have a fat friend and I have a thin friend.

The thin friend is 27 years old, can eat and drink as much as he likes yet he is just 11 stone and 6 feet tall. He doesn't work (although he's looking), and 'hardly moves about.'

One day we were in the pub with him and he drank 12 pints of beer and had a double order of fish and chips; on the way home, he went for a 14" pizza special.

The fat friend is very active, I never see him eat!! He swims and plays rugby. He also doesn't drink alcohol. At 33, he's 5 feet 10 and 19 stone.

He can't work it out either!!

LT.. quit interrogating Twilight ffs... she's 13 years old.

Twilight - well done on the weight loss kiddo.. you are doing well.. and you're doing it sensibly.. without crash-dieting. Don't pay any attention to LT.. he's being *****.. (and don't deny it LT.. cuz you know you are! lol)

Most fat people are fat due to lifestyle. I lost a bit of weight last year, and want to lose some more this year. I changed my lifestyle, exercised more.. and ate healthier.. got an average of a pound a week loss.. that way it stays off, and you don't feel starved.

I don't think people should be punished for being fat, even if they don't do eff-all about it. I don't think people should be punished for smoking or drinking alcohol. This is not effing Saudi Arabia. People can live their lives the way they want to. I don't really give a flying *****.

The only negative thing I have to say about fat people is this... Unless there is a genuine medical reason for you being overweight, you shouldn't blame it on anything else but your own actions.

I was an obese boy back in the day from 8 to 12. I couldn't help it, it was in the genes, some people will be bigger than the rest, and furthermore, I was playing rugby so it didn't help with the bone structure.
I took a drastic diet because I had to, I couldn't stand the bullies anymore and the look in my parents' eyes. I went to the hospital twice because I was declared as "Obscene obesity" and then I lost 20 kilos (about 44lb if I'm right ?).
I kept going with rugby all this time but it was harder you know, to run and all these things but at the end of the day, it helped me more than anything.

The biggest lesson I got from this, is that I've learnt to be confident and strong, to tell people to **** off right in the eyes. I had my vengeance, most of me bullies are now chavs and are doing **** studies while I have class, dignity and I've been doing great since.
I may seem overconfident and I probably have a damn big ego but I learnt to love myself. I will never be skinny and I don't want to. I'm big and muscly but not too much because I like to see myself as a teddy bear. And girls love teddy bears. Basically, I have a rugbyman type of body. You just have to deal with the way you look and try to match the outside with the inside. Some people I know lost so much weight and looked skinny...but got fatter immediately because being skinny doesn't match their inside.

So Twilight, keep going and **** the bastards. Trust me, it will get you anywhere you want to.

Lots of people in my family dating from years back are/were overweight....but the ones I knew ate really healthy food and excercised loads, I have to work really hard to keep my weight down. Helps having a dog to walk all the time though :)

On the other hand, my mother is sooo skinny, but lives on pizza and takeaways...

So I believe there is an element of 'unlucky' genes to it.

It's not but sometimes the envy of losing weight doesn't take over the fact of losing weight because it's a vicious circle. I know that because I went through it. You know you need to but you can't get anywhere.

Because of psychological issues and some genes effect ? You do not become obese because you want to, you become obese without realizing you are. It's a body image issue. Food is the only place you feel good. It's a vicious circle.

The 'fat gene' only makes you vulnerable to be overweight, it doesn't mean you will be overweight so obviously a good balance is needed there. As for psychological issues, well fair enough but if you don't want to be obese then you'll replace the 'addiction' with another one.

But generally you don't know you have the "fat" gene until you are fat and a doctor tells you you have it otherwise of course you need a good balance.
Nobody wants to be obese, it's ridiculous. Like I said, it's an addiction like another, you can't just replace it because you want to. It's all very complicated in your mind but simple at the same time.

I don't think people can't just not lose weight, I think thats another psychological issue (ie being too lazy or no will power but not realising it) and probably the fault of parents for over feeding them and not making them do exercise. If you're fat as a kid then the chances are its your parents fault.

40% of adults in the UK are overweight with half of them being obese. I don't think being overweight is that big a problem, I think its when you hit obesity that its a problem. If some people can avoid being overweight/obese with the fat gene then I don't think there is any excuse for most other people.

Well you can always really judge it from your parents and their siblings. What weight are they? It's usually a good indication as to how you'll fare.

When my Dad was my age he was 10 stone, he is now 14 stone. So he is already 2 stone ahead of me. My Mum was quite thin for her age but now she is about 64kg (something like 9.5-10 stone right now).
My sister is 20 years old and she is about 7.5 stone, so quite light too.

I wanted to go my Dads way, but looks like im coming more from my Mums side.

However, heightwise im following my Dad, he is quite short and so am I... he's probably 5'9, Im about 5'6.

Of course there is an excuse Tom. I'm not going to reveal all my personal issues there who put me in that situation back in the day but there are excuses such as depression, the loss of someone, being very very down, body image issues etc... Some people will fall into drugs, some into alcoholism, etc... and some into food. I've got the fat gene, I didn't control it therefore couldn't avoid being obese, does that make it up for the issues I had ? Of course not. I didn't get fat because I wanted to, I got fat because I got addicted and it made me feel good (4 years) then you realize it does not anymore, the reverse is happening.

I'm not saying all obese people have psychological issues because some of them are lazy and you're right but obesity is a disease and has been declared one of the biggest disease of the decade along with cancer and AIDS.

*mazedsalv**

And to Tom's comments.

A large % of people are fat because it runs in the family. I mean if a 20 stone woman gives birth to you, its about 70% likely or so, that you will be quite big for a small age and then be obese when your older.

However, some people do get themselves fat.
I dont like how they do that and then moan.

BUT, I like people who admit that they like being fat and dont have a problem with it. Its their life and if their happy the way they weigh, fair enough.

If you don't want to be fat you'll do something about it no matter how addicted you are.

That's when you realize you are fat. You are that happy to eat that you don't even realize what is going on but the day people will mock you, you realize something is wrong so you eat more to forget about it. But one day, you somehow realize enough is enough and it's time to put it to an end. Then begins the diet.

What I'm trying to tell you is that, you don't just decide not to be fat anylonger, it doesn't work like that, you're stuck in the middle of something you don't control anymore. I'm only about people who have food addiction related to personal issues, not people who just eat for the sake of eating.
See, I still played rugby while I was obese but it didn't help much.

If you're fat as a kid then the chances are its your parents fault. Not always psychological for some but it can play a part. We have known this for some time with the fat animal study and how fat cells work with the brain, fat cells are not the dumb cells we once thought.. Plus in Germany a study was done with one young man that had to eat, always wanted food, has links with the animal study..

The science behind all this is what drug companies are pumping millions into to find that wonder pill, and it helps us understand more about the human body and the brain..

Our genes play a big part in deciding our weight. You see in ancient times our ancestors had to scavenge for any food they could get. Having a strong appetite is probably something that evolved because it was useful for our survival in those days.

Forward to modern times, and we live in a world (at least in the West anyway) where food is plentiful. However we still have genes which tell us to eat at every opportunity. Hence some people eat too much.

I totally agree. And then we have access to mass produced, low grade food products that are extremely high in saturated fat which, according to what my cousin once told me, the body never realises when it's had enough of and so we continue to gorge. I can't relate to you what she said verbatim, but it was something along those lines. The brain doesn't know when it's full of that kind of fat.

You can put a stop at it when it's already way too late and when you're physically damaged by what's going on around. I remember how it happened for me, it was very emotional and my Dad told me "Son, if you want people to change the way they see you, give them something to be jealous about". It's the best advice I've ever been given and that's what made me go for a diet and become who I am today.
Unfortunately, some people don't ever get that kind of advice or "mental shock" to put an end to it. You just don't wake up and say "Oh wait, let's get a diet". You have to want it, otherwise you'll never get it.
You're right on one point, if you want it badly, you'll do it but you have to want it and to keep it up. That's the hardest part.

If you were as active as I am then you probably wouldn't be 'porgy' (whatever that means I'm just assuming you mean chubby or fat although from pics you've posted before IIRC you're nothing of the sort anyway). Partly right, but it isn't all to do with what we eat.

An average, moderately active 19 year old can consume 5,000 calories per day, yet someone in their mid 30s on 2,500 calories per day can still gain substantial weight.

Look at the gangly teenagers walking the street, thin as poles, their jeans hanging down their butt cheeks. That after consuming numerous pizzas, chips and fizzy pop all day.

you have personal issues which is fine but facts are facts and obesity is nearing our number 1 problem. ignoring it will not make it go away. people eat too much. fact.

Of course people eat too much and it wasn't about the issues I had.
Like I said, personal issues don't explain everything. And it does become an issue even if you eat too much because people will see you differently, no matter the reason you eat. Obesity is not all black and white.
Sure you eat too much, but you should know the reasons behind it, and there are plenty, not just 'eating for eating'.

there is a reason behind every action that you take. The MAIN problem is poor food and access to poor food combined with a total lack of nutritional knowledge. Live on an island with just fruit and veg to eat and whatever your issues are you will reduce to your natural body with no excess fat.
