Journey have revealed that they refused to allow the X Factor winner to cover their song 'Don't Stop Believin''.

The programme's eventual victor Joe McElderry covered the track twice during the live shows and the song was tipped to become the winner's single. However, McElderry eventually released a cover of Miley Cyrus's 'The Climb' instead.

Speaking to The Sun, Journey guitarist Neal Schon explained that the band didn't like Cowell's arrangement of the song.

"We knew about Joe's song because Simon had contacted our management as he wanted to re-do the song with a different kind of arrangement," he said. "We listened to it and we declined. We said there was nothing wrong with the original version. If it's not busted, let's not fix it."

He added: "My buddy Randy Jackson, who was on American Idol in the US with Simon, was stressing the fact that we should really let him do the new version because it would probably go to number one. But we stuck to our decision and now the song is doing as well as it is."

However, the band stressed that they have nothing against McElderry personally.

"I wish Joe all the best," keyboard player Jonathan Cain said. "Maybe he will play with us when we come to Britain."

The original of 'Don't Stop Believin'', which has been in the top ten for the past four weeks, is expected to climb into the top five this week. Meanwhile, the version of the song performed by the cast of television series Glee is expected to enter the top 20.

No doubt the song was stripped down and a choir was added in. They made the right decision, the song is massive!

Shame, reckon it would've been Christmas number one and still number one now if it had been DSB. It's funny how they allowed Glee cast to use it though.

The original is epic so I'm glad Simon didn't ruin it.

To be honest I'm tired of the original now too. It was a nice novelty when Sopranos played it, and when Scrubs played it, and when me and my mates started to plug it back five years ago when it had not yet returned to the mainstream in full force but now everybody and their grandmother boasts it as this student irony style 'cool' thing to like.

DOOD have u heard Journey?

Yes, now toss off.

I don't think anything is essentially changed in the Glee version though. Plus they must be rolling in money with all the royalties right now.
