in the day we sweat it out in the streets of a runaway american dream, at night we ride through mansions of glory in suicide machines, sprung from cages out on Highway 9, chrome-wheeled, fuel-injected, and steppin' out over the line, baby this town rips the bones from your back, it's a death trap, it's a suicide rap. We gotta get out while we're young, 'cos tramps like us, baby we were born to run.

Especially when sat in a ferris wheel having a tea party with your teddies playing scrabble whilst listening to a compilation CD of Bruce Springsteen and The Jacksons whilst having a rave with lasers, and then going on the internet to find a sex tape involving Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman so you can unzip your jeans and use the KY jelly.

The good: Jazz, stand-up comedy, comic books, videogames, Ernest Hemingway, Kurt Vonnegut, the Beat Generation, punk/alternative music (thanks to the New York), Franklin D. Roosevelt, the American civil rights movement, the Stonewall riots and gay rights movement, the (much belated) liberation of Confederate slaves in the War of Independence, assisting us in the World War II, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War
The bad: The KKK, Richard Nixon, Henry Kissinger, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, the CIA, the North American Free Trade Agreement, Born Again Christianity, televangelism, reality TV (MTV: Real World) mormonism, country music, the revival of classical economics, the Iraq War, the first Gulf War, the Vietnam War, the Wall Street Crash/Great Depression (leading to crisis in the Weimar Republic which led to the rise of the Nazis), taking all the credit for winning WWII, even though it mightn't have happened in the first place if it hadn't been for them

Oh Patrick, you make it so easy to totally destroy any post you make it's almost got boring.....almost.
There's a reason why US Television tends to dominate and that's because it's popular with audiences, if it wasn't our channels simply wouldn't show them. When it comes to the entertainment industry, America's is generally the biggest, it's pretty much present in nearly all territories in the world and shows like Lost and 24 have a bigger worldwide fanbase then any UK program can ever hope to achieve. When it comes to Music and cultural influences, they've also contributed a lot.
If we were to take away everything that originated in America, chances are we wouldn't be talking right now and our lives would be quite different.
Also our shows DO get shown in America. If I recall Doctor Who, Primeval and Merlin in particular do quite well and shows like Secret Diary of a Call Girl and Shameless do well on the Showtime channel when they were shown. The reason why they remake some shows is quite simply because our cultures are quite different and the general american audience might not understand the cultural references. While most remakes are quite terrible, at the end of the day imitation is the highest form of flattery. UK drama is so good that American networks pay millions to remake our shows instead of simply showing them, That's a testament to the quality of UK shows as it would be a whole lot cheaper to show the program as is.
Finally that Sims game you're playing was made by an American company....

Yeah, there are a few areas around Ireland especially around Galway that still speak it all the time, I would love to be more fluent in it but Languages aren't my strong point. My daughter loves it and has a great flair for it though so I'm delighted about that.

Are kids interested in it though, like in general? From whom i've talked to most don't really bother with it and find it a annoyance to learn.

It's quite big in America though i've heard. I even used to learn it at an Irish Club. It's a shame the kids aren't bothered though, I think it's one of the oldest languages in Europe or something. The Welsh have kept theirs very well.

Yeah, it is a shame, I think maybe the way it's taught in school could be changed a bit. This teacher that my daughter has now was also her teacher in her first year of school and she taught them alot through Irish and gave a very good base which I think made a big difference

In Scotland Gaelic is taught widely in the highlands. Not necessarily to be spoken but to understand the landscape. Most of the scenery has Gaelic names, especially hills, mountains, rivers, valleys etc. without a good grounding in Gaelic you would be lost in your own country. I would imagine ditto in Ireland.

Yeah, I mean I know the basics cos we learn it all the way through school, but I wouldn't say I'm fluent and definately more effort in the way it's taught in school would help.

I am not American originally, but seriously, the American people, are good people. I would recommend anybody to go and experience it for a while. NOt the regular stereotypical stuff, but go there and live in some average american town for a bit, and you will realise how comfortable they make you feel, for the most part.
I am from Africa, and we are welcoming, but we are very judgemental. IVe been in Europe, and they deffinitely just never make me feel like I am welcome.
Its the only place I have ever gon too, and almost immediately, felt like I could easily be one of the many!

Guess not enough effort is being made to preserve it, plus all the different dialects, there is that nationally recognised Irish, but people prefer to speak it the way they were taught.
well i don't know about irish, but North America certainly had plenty of it's own languages, but it's hard to focus on preserving yur language, when the English (and french, spanish, etc) come over and infect you with all their nasty European diseases that wipe out most of yur population.
Funny how preserving a language/culture gets harder when people are gasping their last breath. Especially when we are talking about a people who's history is mostly oral because they are a migratory culture. Carrying a written library around with you while following the buffalo herds is not exactly possible.
The English should be ashamed of the spread of the English language, not proud of it. European colonialism was disgraceful in every way. Worse than anything Hitler accomplished, imo.
We all would be appalled hearing a German speak with pride about the Nazi's, yet it's not uncommon to hear the English speak with pride about "The Empire" (colonialism).

It's a good question, I've always wondered it.
There's certainly a lot less awareness of Soviet atrocities, triumphing in WWII made it a lot easier to try and cover them up whereas with the Nazi's they were were publicly exposed following the war and it was made sure that people were aware of them. Even in Russia today they are wary of acknowledging the full scale of Uncle Joe's atrocities, and he is still quite popular with a lot of them.
