This years BAFTA nominations were announced a few days ago. Avatar, An Education and The Hurt Locker lead the nominations, each with 8. Some random nominations as always with BAFTA, but that's why I love 'em! Less predictable than other major award ceromonies. I think An Education will be the big winner of the night, taking 'Best Film' (but not the Best British Film). Best director is between Cameron and Bigelow the way I see it.

No one cares? Oh well. Here are the Oscar nominations for those interested. Not many surprises. Until I see 'The Blind Side', I refuse to believe that Sandra Bullock gave an Oscar worthy performance. I mean, c'mon, Sandra Bullock? Really?! And why they've included 10 nominations for best picture is beyond me. It's all thanks to the public outcry last year about 'The Dark Knight', but I feel that listing 10 films makes a nomination seem less special.

+1
Although I think he should be in the leading catagory. If he's the supporting role, who was the leading? Brad Pitt? :laugh2:
morgan freeman and invictus could do well at the oscars

I think it's only the second ever time an animated film's been nominated for Best Picture. The first was Beauty and the Beast.

I loved UP, but I think its nomination is tarnished by the fact that there are 10 films nominated this year. Usually when there is 5 films, there are 2 front runners (3 at a push) and the remaining outsider films are applauded for just being nominated. Now with 10 films, there are still 2 or 3 front runners with 7 outsiders. People are thinking "they are only nominated because there are 10 films this year" instead of the usual applause. I hope the Academy go back to 5 films next year to prevent this from happening again.
Anyways, BAFTA's tomorrow at 9pm. MAKE PREDICTIONS!! Then let's see how wrong we all are

I'm a little surprised at the Hurt Locker love. I think it deserved many of the awards it won, but I didn't think BAFTA would vote the same way. No way it should have been Avatar for Cinematography though IMO.

4/10 :joker: I suck at predictions. I am quite happy that I was wrong about the foreign language film though. I think A Prophet was head and shoulders above White Ribbon, despite what the critics say.

Oscar ballots close it approx 24 hours, then the fate of Hurt Locker producer Nicolas Chartier's will be decided.
For those who haven't heard, Chartier sent an email urging Academy voters to vote for The Hurt Locker and '"not the $500m film". It was intended for a few selected members, but the silly idiot sent it to everyone - including his rival filmmakers! The Academy are likely to take his name off the nomination list due to this rule break. There have also been speculation of The Hurt Locker being disqualified altogether, but I really don't see this happening.
Also, I was unaware of the new voting system they have this year for deciding 'Best Film'. Instead of simply voting for one film and the majority vote wins, the voters are asked to rate the films 1-10, with the highest average getting the award. With Avatar and The Hurt Locker being the 2 leading films, some voters/haters may have ranked them both much lower than what they actually think - meaning a film like Inglorious Basterds or Precious could sneak in and take gold! Watch this space...
