View Full Version : Does sexuality exist?

Jack_
01-02-2010, 05:25 PM
Okay, controversial topic...but an interesting one, nonetheless.

I'm starting to believe everybody has a preference as to which gender they prefer, but, as everybody can find anybody physically attractive, there is still the potential there for you to fall in love with them, rendering orientation non-existant. This might make things difficult when it comes to a sexual relationship, of course, but the potential is still there. What do you think?

Is sexuality just a way of dividing and seperating people, and giving people opportunities to discriminate others, or not?

Sexual orientation shouldn't exist. Sexuality is just one way of defining you are and what you prefer. We all have our preferences. There's no reason why we should all belong in different groups.

As we get older, more people will accept it and more people will realize that its okay to be gay and people (esp boys) will realise its okay to think people of the opposite sex are good looking.

Not true. The church may have a hand in the state and the education system but the influence they have on ordinary folk is nought. The Irish are no more homophobic than the British as far as silly, sweeping statements go. You will get Bible freaks everywhere.

Gay's don't have to hide in Ireland nor are we a race of Bible nutters. You really show yourself up for the closeted, ignorant person you are when it comes to talking about anything outside your own country.

Sexual orientation shouldn't exist. Sexuality is just one way of defining you are and what you prefer. We all have our preferences. There's no reason why we should all belong in different groups.

But on a sociological aspect, having preferences lands to forming groups between people. It's just natural for people who like the same thing to gather together. So who says "preferences" cannot escape the notion of "groups".

But there are also so many grey areas too. Sexual orientation, I suppose, just makes it easier for us to understand eachother. I think deep down, if we removed the labels, there would be less abuse and stereotypes.

That's another consequence of having groups...the rivalry. It's been very rare in History that groups ganged up against other groups, that's how life goes...unfortunately. World Peace is basically impossible so it makes laugh when I see a pageant winner "I want world peace". Get some History books first young lady.

Ireland is no different from Britain. Some people are homophobic, most are not. You can't just class an entire nation as being homophobic. Listen to yourself. If you were talking about Jamaica or Russia, or the Middle East, you might get away with it, but Ireland is a pretty ordinary place.

Sexuality as a definition of your preference exist's yes, as far as it being a pre defined, unchangable, state then No.

I can see how David Beckam is attractive, because i know what represents attractiveness today, but if i was to imagine a amorous inturlude with him, DISCLAIMER "I am forcing myself to imagine an amorous inturlude with David Beckham under much duress of my manly hormones and i hope my Dad does not surf Tibb" then i would not find him attractive in the slightest. But that is the thing, there is a lot of social, and physialogical things effecting preference, take away my overtly homophobic father, and my particular hormones then i am sure my preference would be different.
