View Full Version : My, like, 100 favourite songs, like, EVERRR. (finished.)

...if this doesn't spring a series of copycat threads I'll be thoroughly disappointed.

100. Suede – The Beautiful Ones
THB9pA13Tfc
The number of Bowie pretenders there’ve probably been since he emerged is likely to be high – and none have really struck me as anything of note other than this song. Released in 1996, it reminds me heavily of another track on this countdown; “All The Young Dudes” by Mott the Hoople. One of many “I’ve driven around to this song” entries.

99. Pet Shop Boys – What Have I Done To Deserve This?
Wn9E5i7l-Eg
So, the Boys were already one of the 80s most accomplished acts with a number of brilliant dance tunes under their belt. But in 1987, 60s legend Dusty Springfield came back and lent her voice to this – hitting #2 on both sides of the Atlantic. Really cheerful and proof that the most unlikely collaborations can sometimes be the best.

98. Paul McCartney & Wings – Live and Let Die
JK2hKzZss5Y
It’s always difficult for me to decide; which was the best Beatle? Lennon was the visionary, but McCartney’s knack for tune after motherfunking tune always gives him a run for his money. Coincidentally, George Harrison was probably my favourite. Back to this, and the best Bond song evaaaar. It always looks so exciting performed live, with all the laser shows and what not.

97. Oasis – Champagne Supernova
g3C7DECI0jU
Some undecipherable lyrics aside, this is one of Oasis’ best. I find it’s best to listen to this whilst stuck in a car in the pouring rain. Probably better if you’re high, too.

96. Sixpence None The Richer – Kiss Me
3YcNzHOBmk8
The 90s produced a small string of ridiculously catchy and sweet pop songs like this. The guitars are perfect, and hearing everyone join in singing (however bad they are) is always infectious.

95. Elton John – Tiny Dancer
_O80b002XT0
Thankfully still intact after some horrendous version by ‘DJ Ironik’ last year (I think the ironic bit is that he isn’t a ****ing DJ), Tiny Dancer was a simple song about the lyricist, Bernie Taupin’s, girlfriend who was a dancer for John. God-given piano powers.

94. Echo and the Bunnymen – The Cutter
grD2YkK6WmY
The 80s produced a brilliant number of post-punk bands: Joy Division, The Cure and this outfit to name a few. ‘The Cutter’ has a brilliant Eastern sound to it and I’m ****ed if I know the name of the instrument responsible.

93. Philip Oakey and Giorgio Moroder – Together In Electric Dreams
1rZ0Dp06OO4
I know this is cheesier than arista’s Y-Fronts, but my god it’s a ****ing tune. Definitely one of the best 80s pop songs, if not the #1. Often mis-attributed to the Human League (because Oakey was their lead singer), it reportedly took only 10 minutes to write.

92. Andy Williams – The Impossible Dream
RUQsktbiLpk
Almost certainly not his song to begin with, it’s near impossible to track down the original artists of songs before the 70s – because the classics are always covered by absolutely everybody. This version from, what I believe to be, one of the greatest male voices of all time, was used in a Honda commercial recently and is breathtaking.

91. Steppenwolf – Magic Carpet Ride
EEEzbFxEbB8
Quite different to their other material, this track is beyond catchy. :)

90. Bryan Adams – Summer of ‘69
4glDoGgQ4rQ
One of those childhood-nostalgia tracks here. My dad had a mix-tape of stuff including this, and every Sunday we’d drive with him to this pub to have lunch, and he was part of this skittles club...driving and singing along to this were probably the “best days of my life”.

89. Blondie – Heart of Glass
8CmhqoB1lNE
Obligatory Blondie track here. Just reminds me of countless hours spent driving around and shooting pedestrians on Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. When video games were cooool. ;)

88. Bette Midler – The Rose
u6_s0QIbI94
NO THIS IS NOT A ****ING WESTLIFE SONG. She’s pretty much the queen of the overblown ballad, and they don’t come better than this. Beautiful lyrics.

87. Prince – Purple Rain
fmFazV1Bj1I
Ruth Lorenzo aside, Prince’s whole career intrigues me. He’s so short and hairy, yet so bloody sexy and I can’t think why. Oh, this song’s a classic btw. Now where’s that KY...[/conzors]

86. Buddy Holly – Every Day
GMezwtB1oCU
I’ll be honest – I don’t really know **** all about Mr. Holly. Apart from the obvious exit. But tracks like this make it easy to see why he was so pivotal in the groundwork of popular music we have today.

85. Kate Bush – This Woman’s Work
RcdU6qNBNyI
Yeah, the NSPCC song. But I knew it before :p My best friend is obsessed with her – he went through a phase of performing the Wuthering Heights dance at house parties. Most odd. But this...well it’s rather heartbreaking really. Also, on a side-note, I think she's probably one of the sexiest women in music of all time.

84. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Where The Wild Roses Grow
8srgfw7GDkM
First of two of his songs in this rundown, WTWRG features rather surprisingly good vocal assistance from Ms. Kylie Minogue. It’s an intriguing song – the story about a doomed love affair pulls at the heart strings.

83. Smokey Robinson & The Miracles – Tears of a Clown
k2kxlZDOHeQ
Because Motown is one of the greatest musical revolutions of all time. Was tough picking between this and Tracks of my Tears, but the stupidly cheerful tune and superior vocals won over.

82. David Bowie – “Heroes”
zQFuNHCMF2Y
Yeah the title has speech marks. See that yours does too. Now, once upon a time, this was the only David Bowie song I had, knew and liked. Shameful, I know, but if you’re going to start off somewhere this is pretty much the perfect one to pick.

81. Len – Steal My Sunshine
KM2TwP2_Pxs
Without a doubt the catchiest song from the 90s. Incredibly uplifting tune, and reminds me of countless summer times.

80. ABBA - The Winner Takes It All
5dP2_yjFE3w
Hankies at the ready, lesbos.

79. Johnny Cash - Hurt
clq01TXQR0s
Razors at the ready, homos.

78. The Monkees - Daydream Believer
UQNqk54HPdE
And now to cheer you up again. Aaaaw. The Monkees. So cheerful.

77. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five - The Message
O4o8TeqKhgY
DON'T PUSH ME 'COS I'M CLOSE TO THE EDGE. I'M TRYING NOT TO LOSE MY HEAD. AHAHAHAHAHA. ****ing EPIC tune.

76. The Doors - The End
QHFK1yKfiGo
Apocalypse Now was already a pretty ace movie, but this was the icing on the cake. Brilliance.

75. The Cure - Close To Me
SCBeZwBFkQ0
Look Stacey.X! It's like that Lady Sovereign song!!

74. Elton John - Your Song
mTa8U0Wa0q8
It took him ten minutes to write this song - and those short few minutes spawned possibly the simplest and sweetest love song of all time. Though a little rethink on the line "If I was a sculptor, but then again...no..." might've been in order.

73. Fleetwood Mac - The Chain
pcawnRIyeok
Because that bassline kicking in is like downing a pint, standing up and announcing "we're off."

72. John Lennon - Jealous Guy
6lLs2dC9NaE
You may be intrigued to find out I'm not including Imagine on the countdown. Don't get me wrong, it's one of the best songs of all time, but for me it's one of those "constantly rammed down your throat" ones. This is equally moving.

71. Don McLean - Crying
juxvkRDO2Nk
Originally a Roy Orbison hit, I think this is one of three covers on my list (Hurt, above, being one other). He's slowed down the original and wringed every word for every single droplet of emotion he can muster. Really sad ****.

A positive comment :O hallelujah. it's almost as if posting negative things about "my favourite songs" wasn't ever going to irritate me.

And before someone uses the 'if they're so good, you can argue against the criticism' line; not against Stacey.X and MeMyselfandI you can't. For an argument you require coherence and logic.

70. Michael Jackson - Billie Jean - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwDkoJKPr4g
He was the King of music videos as well as Pop, and if you don't know this song you're Martian. If you're just reading this out of courtesy, then please pretend I said something informative and witty.

69. Queen - Radio Ga Ga - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBUr1pSWTVI
The video is heavily reminiscent of a film called Metropolis that I remember vaguely and I'm not sure where from. The song gave a certain Lady her name, and is my particular favourite from Queen.

68. Roxy Music - Virginia Plain
_zoi6O-cq9I
Well, I'm a massive fan of glam-rock, and Bryan Ferry is enough. Throwing Brian Eno into the fray rapidly boosts its appeal. I feel like I should be in a cocktail-bar in Miami listening to this.

67. Bob Dylan - Lay Lady Lay
LwcJQEJWV_E
He's more known for his nasal, high vocals in the majority of his works, but this proved he can pretty much do anything.

66. Bob Marley - Redemption Song
OFGgbT_VasI
The name Bob has another musical icon here. It's a tragedy he died so young.

65. Aretha Franklin - I Say A Little Prayer
STKkWj2WpWM
The woman is one of the greatest voices of all time.

64. The Beatles - Hey Jude - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BD3ovfZXO5Q
This reminds me of a time last year where I was with a friend, driving home, and caught in a traffic jam on the motorway. It was summer, it was evening, and this song helped make it one of those beautiful-despite-the-circumstances moments.

63. Ben E. King - Stand By Me
Vbg7YoXiKn0
The tune has been sampled to death, which is a slight testament to its influence. Beautiful stuff.

62. Joy Division - Atmosphere
ZNoUi0mpBOc
The title says it all really. It gives me goosebumps, it's so tense and encapsulating that it can't help but move me in some way.

61. Chuck Berry - You Never Can Tell
Ik-RsDGPI5Y
Because this scene is probably one of my favourite movie scenes of all time. Brilliant movie with a brilliant soundtrack - Chuck Berry is one of Rock and Roll's GODS. Johnny B. Goode is a much better song, but this represents a lot more to me.

MissKittyFantastico

60. Nina Simone - I Put A Spell On You
8Y99tXNxV5s
Best female voice ever. End of discussion.

59. Oasis - Wonderwall - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hzrDeceEKc
Well...it's one of those "everybody knows it and will sing along when it comes on" songs. And it's genuinely a classic track.

58. The Kinks - Sunny Afternoon
1h1oRP7FfBw
They're often overlooked and tragically so. They've got a string of phenomenal songs and this is one of my favourites. It has a strange awkwardness to it that's kind of endearing.

57. The Jackson Five - I Want You Back - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vt9TUy0_GiM
Without a doubt the best pop debut of all time.

56. The Who - Teenage Wasteland
HsbPVlFcmDs
What the hell is that instrument at the beginning? It reminds me of fairgrounds and amusement arcades, which pretty much shape up my most enjoyable experiences as ein Kind. Pretty much every instrument is demonstrating its peak abilities in this track - Keith Moon being the obvious man for icon-status.

55. The Pogues - Fairytale of New York - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7exy38uLN1Y
It's the only Christmas song I'll include on the list, and only because I see it as much more than that. It's a beautiful piece of art, with humble and genuine emotion in its conception and later poignancy in the sad death of Kirsty MacColl. Oh and Christmas isn't Christmas unless you spend the week before it drunkenly singing this in pubs.

54. Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven
w9TGj2jrJk8
They always struck me until recently as one of those bands that are overrated beyond belief. But this song is like masterpiece after masterpiece after masterpiece. It's the musical equivalent of moving on from Van Gogh's Starry Night to Monet's Water Lilies.

53. Martha Reeves and the Vandellas - Nowhere to Run
RQRIOKvR2WM
It has a factory-line sound to it and that's rather reflective of the Motown label's knack for churning glorious hit after glorious hit out at us. They're probably my favourite girl group after the Supremes. More from both later ;)

52. David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust
XXq5VvYAI1Q
One of the best albums of all time and definitely the best musical alter-ego of all time. Everything about it excites me - the weird Warhol artistry, the glam rock sounds, the ambiguous sexuality...

51. Nat King Cole - Unforgettable
Yn_AygHc4cA
What a voice. You could be peeling grated cheese off a Subway wrapper listening to this and still feel like the King of the world. Its use in the opening sequence to the "Watchmen" movie is perfection.

Alf
04-02-2010, 09:24 PM

50. Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through The Grapevine
hajBdDM2qdg
One of the funkiest songs ever. He's made being caught cheating seem like a really light-hearted thing but in doing so spawned one of the best Motown tracks of all time.

49. Dusty Springfield - Son of a Preacher Man
dp4339EbVn8
Definitely the best female voice that us Brits have produced. This song's been covered to death by pretty much anyone with a vag., but the original still holds its own.

48. Bob Marley - No Woman, No Cry
dteHoydD8es
My favourite from the dreadlocked legend. :)

47. Prince - When Doves Cry
ucZRore0-EE
...I wish I was alive in the 70s.

46. Glen Campbell - Wichita Lineman
rqrMd5y7QXQ
I discovered this through watching Stephen Fry's "...In America" documentaries. The thought of travelling the dusty desert roads in the mid-West to this is delightful. It has an undiscernable twinkle to it.

45. Patsy Cline - Crazy
Zzq5X-p2C0Y
Originally written by Willie Nelson, this was begging to be performed by a female - and the tragic story of Patsy Cline made it as perfect as it could ever be. "I had a hit out called "I Fall to Pieces" and I was in a car wreck. Now I'm really worried because I have a new hit single out and its called "Crazy"."

44. U2 - With or Without You - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Ye8GLPUVsM
I think everyone has someone in their mind whenever they hear this.

43. Simon and Garfunkel - The Boxer
-hqdZ4AWSaI
Because every time I hear it I can't help but join in with the "li-la-li"s. They're pretty much the most poetic musicians of all time.

42. The Cranberries - Linger
U75oyQHw44g
I've been through the rest of my list and I actually think this is the most recent track on the countdown, pmsl. But...well I fall in love with this song every time I hear it. Tragically sad and beautiful at the same time.

41. Ludovico Einaudi - I Giorni
jMoVW-paT3w
I found this through use in various adverts and BBC documentaries and it was just dying to be in my library. As a young teenager I never really saw the potential for classical music to move me in any form - I could appreciate it as a wind-down from your average iPod play, but nothing more. This piece however can have me on the verge of tears :\

Yeah, all great stuff and you have a good mix of styles going on which is always refreshing. Really enjoying this Campbell one.

40. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Into My Arms
MS4gRmvvDsU
I may be young but I rather understand this one. It's interesting how desperation can sometimes turn you to religion (See: LeatherTrumpet), and the spirit of undying love is embodied purely and poetically here.

39. Fleetwood Mac - Go Your Own Way
XMqg-MQRI9I
On the opposite end of the scale, the love-stories and rifts of Fleetwood Mac added a whole new dimension to their music and you can feel the tension they must have been feeling every time this was performed.

38. Otis Redding - (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay
8nA18g_PwG0
Well...he did for soul music what The Beatles did for pop. He wrote 'Respect' (of Aretha fame) amongst others. One of a sad many legends who've perished in plane crashes.

37. Pink Floyd - The Great Gig in the Sky
ZAydj4OJnwQ
The vocals on this from Clare Torry are phenomenal. It's the perfect homage to death.

36. David Bowie - Sound and Vision
wdxIhNOgwBE
The majority of his genius was exhausted in the 60s/early 70s, but 1977 saw this. It makes me dance.

35. Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart
qHYOXyy1ToI
It sounds timeless.

34. The Beatles - Come Together
Vd38yrWx2o0
Probably one of the catchiest hooks they ever did. Hell, that anyone ever did.

33. Etta James - At Last
uVI254QGSQ4
Hearing this song is probably the nearest one can get to orgasm without sustaining an erection.

32. Bob Dylan - The Times, They Are A-Changin' - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2hNhM3dHB4
The whole time of social movement and civil rights change is extremely interesting to me - it genuinely seemed like an exciting and meaningful time to be living in. I should've been a ****ing hippy. Also, the video above is one of the best introductions to a movie there's ever been. The imagery is so powerful.

31. Earth, Wind and Fire - September
nfLEc09tTjI
Funkiest. Motherfucccking. Song. Ever. I smile like the bloody Cheshire Cat when this comes on.

Wildcat!

30. Jimi Hendrix - Crosstown Traffic
ClQgkOoY1do
...I think he might have been the coolest person to ever walk the planet.

29. Elton John - Rocket Man (I Think It's Going To Be A Long, Long Time)
rzrKlEtxTx4
It sounds incredibly cheerful but I find it rather sad. Not the last "I'm an astronaut, woe is me" song on this countdown, either ;)

28. Stevie Wonder - Superstition
wDZFf0pm0SE
Whenever I'm on ths bus and listening to this, the ride always seems to a be a little bit bumpier.

27. Nina Simone - Feeling Good
J8px9XnrlV8
The fact that this has been covered by so many artists in so many different ways just goes to show how influential and powerful this song was.

26. The Beatles - A Day In The Life
AiFYOn1AFms
The way this finishes off Sgt. Pepper's is just fantastic.

25. The Doors - People Are Strange
awi14wDTxNw
Supposedly, this is about a mix of outsiders, drug-users and hippies. I can see that. I'd rather like to be strange. Normality is dull.

24. The Animals - House of the Rising Sun
mmdPQp6Jcdk
Because anyone who's anyone knows all the lyrics and will sing along regardless of how inebriated they are. Check the spelling of inebriated for me please. My penchant for big words often outruns my spelling ability. MY MOOOOOOOOOOTHER WAS A TAILOR.

23. David Bowie - Starman
X5iOiLX5ppA
It's Somewhere Over the Rainbow with some cool. It has Suffragette City as a B-Side, for ****'s sake.

22. Bob Dylan - Knockin' On Heaven's Door
k_Q3q_57M_k
The version by Guns N' Roses has its own merits and is probably more known, but it's the original which shines for me. It has more of a depth to it, one that really embraces the idea that you're about to die.

21. The Rolling Stones - Sympathy for the Devil
8-ARdG5oseo
The lyrics and meaning of this song were so controversial at the time - and it's a masterpiece in how clever it's been written.

Elton John , Stevie Wonder , The Beatles , David Bowie . All good.

20. Oasis - Live Forever
i_2mWhfOhGU
This has a bit of personal meaning for me. I was walking around town late one night, during my 'late night walks' phase, and this came on. Out of nowhere, my older brother came walking from an alley-way and we walked along up the high street for a while. That was the last time I saw him without life support. Bit of an inappropriate song really given the circumstances, but RIP Michael.

19. Diana Ross and the Supremes - You Keep Me Hangin' On
0h_WyIx7Q2Q
Set me free, why don't you baby? GET OUT MY LIFE, WHY DON'T YOU BABY? Best girl group ever.

18. Martha Reeves and the Vandellas - (Love Is Like A) Heat Wave
XE2fnYpwrng
These give the Supremes a run for their money, though.

17. The Cure - Friday I'm In Love
i3E82WtyNFE
Probably the best pop-ish song of the 90s.

16. Don McLean - American Pie
uAsV5-Hv-7U
Another of those songs where everyone seems to know every lyric. Masterful song.

15. Slade - How Does It Feel?
Q28WYKnGNNE
They're more known for Cum On Feel The Noize or that awful Christmas song, but at their peak this came out. It petered out after this song, but what a way to bow out.

14. Simon and Garfunkel - The Sound of Silence
pDYxgDO5bCI
Probably the best lyrics I've ever heard...really haunting song.

13. The Beatles - While My Guitar Gently Weeps
IfNMrnTlK-w
The prime reason why, for me, George was the best Beatle. He wrote this, as well as 'With A Little Help From My Friends', 'Here Comes the Sun' and 'Within You Without You', amongst others. Featuring Eric Clapton on a guitar solo (a rarity for a Beatles track; guest performances) it demonstrates how guitars should be played.

12. Sam Cooke - A Change Is Gonna Come
48K5Y0421Ig
Songs really don't come more powerful than this. The vocals are superb, the politics and lyrics are to-the-point and sheer hopeful, and its anthem-status amongst Civil Rights movements is irreplaceable.

11. Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
IXdNnw99-Ic
Another personal song. They were my dad's favourite band, and in his posessions last year I found a few Floyd tapes...every time I hear this song it's difficult not to think of him.

10. Tracy Chapman - Fast Car

O6475u0wEG0

My tendency for fantasy has conjured a special reason for this song...basically it involves the same time as the Hey Jude entry. It's just...I don't know. There's elements of hope to it, and thinking towards the future; I think it'd strike a chord with any adolescent.

9. Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy

ZWmrfgj0MZI

For a very very long time, this was my favourite song. It's a dance classic - the vocals are incredible, the video inspired many spoofs [see The Verve's Bittersweet Symphony] and it's a brilliant tune.

6. Fleetwood Mac - Landslide

FhNrrrCCTdA

It's pretty much everything I and anyone my age will be going through at the moment. It tells of adolescence, fear of the future, uncertainty... oh and Stevie Nicks can sing anything beautifully.

The tune and lyrics for this make it fitting for pretty much any happy ending.

4. David Bowie - Life On Mars?

46s3gHR3IEI

In my opinion, his best. The piano is brilliance. The lyrics are a bit nonsense but I don't particularly care.

Shaun

It's really hard to pick between the final three.

3. Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower

RD7s4i_X-p0

Without a doubt the single best piece of guitar music there has ever lived. He was a ****ing genius.

2. The Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter

LJMnES7WoT4

I was shocked to discover the woman on guest vocals was Merry Clayton, of "Yes" from Fame...fame. She's phenomenal on this, and the power it packs is unrivalled.

Stacey.

1. The Cure - Just Like Heaven

59V2KJo75u8

It's by no means the best song ever written, but for me it's the aesthetics, the atmosphere and the feeling of the song that makes it extra-special. It's 80s, it's romantic, it's indulgent and it's perfect.

tbh, without half of these artists, none of your favourite artists would be around so you could at least have some respect for legendary artists, whether or not they're to your tastes.
