Muse and Stevie Wonder will join U2 as headliners at this year's Glastonbury Festival.

Stadium rockers Muse will top the bill on the main Pyramid Stage on Saturday 26 June, with Motown legend Wonder closing the event the following night.

U2's appearance on the Friday had previously been announced.

Some 175,000 people will travel to the Somerset show, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. It has just got a licence to continue until 2016.

Muse headlined the event in 2004 and singer Matt Bellamy told BBC News the event was "very special".

"When you go out to the countryside and look at some cows and breathe in some fresh air and watch some good music, I think everyone connects with something which has been missing from city life," he said.

Glastonbury tickets are sold out. Muse are also playing stadium shows in London and Manchester in September.

The trio are nominated for best group at next week's Brit Awards, but Bellamy said he would not be attending for "personal reasons".

Other stars on this year's Glastonbury bill will include Dizzee Rascal, Corinne Bailey Rae, Andy Williams and Jack Johnson.

Organisers have also promised surprise big-name performances to celebrate the anniversary.

omfg. I WANNA.

I take it your all as gay for Stevie Wonder as I am?

Though I must admit, I did just get a mental image of him bellowing ''GOOD EVENING GLASTONBURY!'' to an empty field bar a few indifferent cows.

Matt Belamy can be as Matt Belamy as he wants, but he will never be Stevie Wonder.

Jack Johnson must be the most mundane personality vaccum in all of music. Just ... astounding.

I'm all for diversity but it's a shame the festival has become so corporate and mainstream. Used to be just about tripping in the mud listening to loud guitar music or weird electronic music.
