well they're pretty incomparable really aren't they. One is a true artist, one of the most interesting faces of pop in years, writes and produces all her own work, puts on these amazing live shows, has the entire world talking about her.
and then the other is some talentless mess who got lucky and has an excellent portfolio of writers and producers helping her.

She's hardly a *****, or washed-up.
And she is the biggest selling female artist of the Noughties.

And she is the biggest selling female artist of the Noughties.
well she's been married twice, both to scumbags before she was 28, got pregnant for the second time less than a year after her first child, iirc, she once stimulated - or perhaps performed - oral sex on Kevin behind a balcony infront of a sea of paparazzi, the only album in which she wrote the majority of the material [co-wrote i mean] is basically audio porn, her first love claims she cheated on him....
she's hardly pure is she?
Britney is a product. A cult of personality. It's a bit like Michael Jackson, who had these rabid fans not only of his music, but of his personal life. People who were just fans of the guy himself and grew attatched to him no matter what anybody said about him.

i prefer the Britney machine.
It's too soon for me to compare them really. GaGa relies on a lot of tacky promotion (penis rumours? REALLY?) and just as much shameless gimmickery as Britney (ooh, I have a teacup and resemble the reason Alexander McQueen hung himself) - whereas Britney has a string of good songs to her name. Well. Her writers' names.

I agree completely, GaGa is very good at drawing attention to herself, but she can back it up.
At least she is drawing attention to herself. She dosn't need a team to invent and sell her.
Amazing pop self promoter. Shameless? Hell yeah.

GaGa by miles, she is so cooky and interesting. An amazing artist, in fact when I hear about her I want to know what she has done.
Being controversial is a great sign of good art.

People will say Gaga right now, because she is new, and really doesnt have any competition for the new generation. BUt she has a long way to go, to reach Britney's status imo. I will say Britney. SHe is already a legend.

Lady Gaga.
Pop music isn't my thing but she is the one who made me like it somehow. Her album was the first I listened in full for a while, she made me like her style of music. I think she's intriguing, she has her own style, she sets trends and is rather controversial. She's a great artist to me.
Britney Spears is just...erg I can't even say it.
I don't think longevity has anything to do with it. I just don't like Britney and I do like GaGa. I hated Britney from the start.
Also I doubt GaGa is looking to reach Britney's 'status'. What status is this exactly? She is already a better songwritter. If she was aiming for Britney as an artist wouldn't she be aiming downwards, as opposed to up?
Or are we bringing record sales into debates again? Please say we are not.

Britney defines pop music in the late nineties and noughties. Baby One More Time firstly, is one of the, if not the, most successful pop songs of all time. The impact she had is similar to Lady Gaga's. Britney's often credited for the revival of pop music - and if you look at every young female pop artist today, they're modelled similar to what Britney was, the sweet and innocent girl with a nice voices and cool dance moves.
She may not be your cup of tea, but I don't know how you can deny she hasn't made an impact in pop history. She's a pop icon and this is clearly backed up by her performances (snake at the vma's, kiss at the vma's - all iconic), videos (baby one more time - schoolgirl outfit, toxic) and songs (baby one more time, oops i did it again, toxic, womanizer - signature pop hits to her name).
She's THE best selling female artist of the noughties and is actually the youngest person on the best selling artists list of all time. 107 Million in 10 years clearly proves she's had an impact. She's a pop legend - you think of pop music in the past 10 years and you think of Britney Spears.
Lady Gaga is the latest trend - I don't think she can be compared to Britney right now. Britney managed to peak, let the world tear her apart, then come back again and I think that says a lot about her as a human and an artist.

Lady Gaga, she's one of the few brilliant pop acts around.

You see I agree with everything you said but you are still completely missing my point. Britney was not behind most of this. She was the face of it. That's why I don't rate her as an artist. She is an exercise in marketing.
I just cant help but laugh when you say Britney defined pop music. Britney didn't define ****.

To be honest I don't know why he is quoting figures and statistics. Does someone become more of an artist the more they sell? In which case shouldn't Prince be promoted to some sort of dictator of the universe status by now?

well I agree, that sales are irrelevant in regard to evaluating someone's artistry. But even if they weren't, BOMT doesn't merit the title of most successful pop song of all time :P

GaGa's gimmicks annoy me really, she has decent songs and that, but shes not controversial or anything, just tries too hard.
mark I'm not undermining the success of BOMT. But it is not the most successful pop song of all time.
well if it's not, it isn't far off at all.
it was the first song in history to go to #1 in over 50 countries
it still often appears on itunes top 100 pop songs, 12 years later.
I can't choose between them,too hard!
