What do you mean by strict? Not allowing sick jokes? Maybe cos not everyone wants to put up with them. It's in the rules,no one has suddenly got any stricter.

No, not that, I'm over that.
Just all these threads being closed and people receiving infractions for making 'sexual' poems, as a joke.
It'll come to the point where any form of banter is banned.

Most of the time these things are moderated because somebody has reported it. You should see my email inbox - most of the emails I get are reported posts from TiBB.

I havn't closed anything or given any infractions out in a while.
And Smithy you can see the infraction reason on your profile.
Certain people take things way too far. The mods have to act, they have a duty to do so.
You shouldn't take things personal, if you do wrong then you live with the consequences not just on this forum but in life as a whole. Some people need to realise that some things they may find funny, not everyone will. That's it really. I don't think the mods/admins ban without reason, I've had my far share of bans believe me. I know my limits though.

Like that Tsunami thread that Tom made. Yeah, sure, some people didn't agree that they were disappointed, but I don't see why that's a reason for a thread to be closed. It's a debate...

And people honestly care about some posts on a forum that much? I think I've only ever reported something once before, and I was much younger back then.
What's wrong with "don't like it, ignore it". Seems a bit silly to me, bit like OFCOM.
People will learn in time.
I personally would kick any of the mods/admins ass right now and not care but I'm a changed person. -sob-

Well, not really...because we do get a lot of ridiculous reports...like when BB is on, some people feel the need to report people if they say they dislike a housemate.
But if something is reported and we feel people could take offense, the thread can be closed/infractions given

You need to take a step back and accept that not everyone will share your view of things (this goes for everyone) - you might find it ridiculous that some people "care about some posts on a forum that much" but you yourself care that the forum is becoming "strict." Maybe it seems silly to you, it doesn't seem silly to others, c'est la vie.

I never said everyone is going to agree with me, again, that's the idea of the thread. To see who agrees and who doesn't.
Anyway, I know nothing is going to change and infact, if anything, it'll probably get worse. All I'm saying is that it just seems, at least from my time on here, that it's gone from people being able to get away from quite a lot, to hardly anything, and that threads are being closed left, right and centre, ending valuable discussions, something which people have been complaining there has been a lack of recently. That's all. I just think it's driving people away from this place.

I'm trying to think of comparisons, the only one I can think of from the past was Harry's first graphics shop. Plenty of 'bullying' like behaviour went on in that thread, and no posts were deleted, even though numerous posts from mods were made, and it took 28 pages before the thread was eventually closed.
That's unheard of now.

This forums one of the most lenient I know of and is very fair (IMO). Some things go too far and for whatever reason I think people are actively trying to push the boundries this past week. It's been like a battle of 'who can get banned first'
Jack_

I can understand Steph's ban, as much as it was funny. Just other things confuse me.
But James, that Tsunami thread wasn't a joke. It was a real discussion. No matter whether people disagree or not.
During Big Brother, we have lots and lots of members posting threads about housemates sex tapes etc, and they aren't deleted. That's sort of the comparison I'm trying to make. Big Brother is an adult show, with adult content, and so adult discussion is going to take place on a forum about it.

It's difficult to moderate during BB because of the increased activity, things slip through the net and stay around longer because there's more things to attend to, but if they get posted in off season, obviously they are deleted/locked far quicker.

BB is an adult show. The old videos they used to sell were 15/18 rated. It has always been aimed at adults, it has adult content. Sure, kids watch it, but kids watch porn, doesn't mean it's not for adults. You see what I mean?
That's just silly now.
No it's not. The majority of people sign up to this site because they watch Big Brother. In Big Brother they talk about sex, are they offended by that too? Are they those people that complain to OFCOM? It's the same principle really.

They wouldnt show a pussy on BB Blue or not, before 10PM but its offensive to women everywhere who have a Blue Vagina not to show it.
Its like not showing a ginger housemate and saying there diffrent, just because its blue doesnt mean it shouldnt treated the same as other pussies am I right?

Its actually a bit ridiculous that you cant see reasons why infractions were given and threads were closed. You gotta look at it in 2 frames of minds, yes it may be funny to some (I admit to finding somethings funny) or just a debate, but it may offend others and it is not appropriate so deal with the consequences.
I disagree with Smithy getting an infraction for arguing though, plenty of that happens on here.

I am a moderator on another forum devoted to astronomy and aerospace with other sciences thrown in.
Some of the rules we have there would ban things I have done here, like image linking using the img tags. The owners worry this is a copyright violation, steals bandwidth and is not nice on those who still have dial ups instead of broadband.
Plus if someone wants to advocate a theory outside the mainstream of science, or with regard to conspiracy theories there are extra rules.
During my time as a moderator there I have been known for being severe and trigger happy, however that forum wants to be available to schools. If we allowed some things there that we see here, the forum would be blocked by various net nannies.
That said, this morning I found a lot of locked threads, one after just two posts and yet I saw no post that would have violated forum rules.
As for the tsunami thread, could the offending posts have just been delete and the posters warned?
As a suggestion, moderator to moderators, if a thread needs to be closed, please could the moderator closing it post a reason as to why it is being closed. when we close a thread on the forum I am a moderator, that is our procedure and it gives a degree of transparency.
Insults Deleted.
A strict forum that really wanted to keep the place clean looking would ban both offensive members and members who are ... well ... stupid? As it stands we have a great policy on banning people for making offensive jokes but absoloutely no policy at all on trolltastic Edit language who could be viewed as a benig offensive to humanity.
Edit of us filthy young things with our bad language but yeah. I wouldn't say this place is strict. Although locking that disaster thread was incredibly stupid. You don't like the thread? Aww. Leave then. I don't like plenty of threads. Can we close them based soley on my opinion or is that a luxury confined to moderators?
On a strict forum, we would never have had to put up with the MeMyself&I trouble becauce the IP would have been banned first day. Jobs done, case closed, thank you and don't come again.
And seriously - how stupid is the obligation to close threads that offend people? Can these people not find the back button? Do they need the thread to be vaccum sealed and shot into space to sleep soundly at night?
Plus as Sticks said - GIVE REASONS WHY YOUR CLOSING YOUR THREADS. Do your job properly peeps. Nobody ever explains what's going on and we then have a further four threads wondering what's going on. Usually they end up locked too.
Insults deleted.

"If we really did have a policy of banning stupid people - the number of moderators would drop quiet a bit I reckon. "
No that does not stand for Vicky
We have no apparent set guidelines. That's why you get members whinging about getting banned for posting offensive sh!t. I could call somebody a ****** and then another person could say that about someone the next day and get banned. There needs to be consistency.
And members moaning about the postcount thing. Just shut up. You're the reason why it has been disabled. Stop spamming the forums with your bollocks. What does postcount mean really? Absolutely **** all. You just get your sh!ts and giggles from having a huge number of posts and getting your 10K awards because for some reason it makes you feel better about yourself. You can still post in Chat & Games. It's just this time your spam won't contribute to your obscenely large postcount.
Me thinks you need to go out and get some fresh air for a change because some of you are clearly not thinking straight.
Consistency. That's the one. Why didn't I just say that?
Postcount has been disabled? Well halle ****ing lujah. I love these dolts who pretend they don't care. Next step - remove the postcount numbers. That'll also stop any pre teen troll who will gauge any attack on them or their logic as being an attack soley based on postcount.
Consistency. That's the one. Why didn't I just say that?
Postcount has been disabled? Well halle ****ing lujah. I love these dolts who pretend they don't care.
Only in Chat and Games. Well I'm glad I'm not the only one to think positively of this. Maybe then all the spammers will **** off, since disabling postcount is apparently the crime of the century.
Expressing annoyance at it's removal is pretty much owning up to caring about your post count, and thus owning up to your 1337 noobtube skillz of posting.
Unless of course the postcount function has some hidden virtuous ability granting spiritual energy I have not yet tapped into that betters your life in some way.

I don't think the forum is strict.I find it annoying whenever there is an argument, infractions and the thread being closed is always the end outcome. Arguing is one of the only things that make all the members on this forum actully interact with each other, if there was no arguing it would be boring. I would hate it if I came onto this thread and everyone was just agreeing with each other and not expressing there opinions just because it may give them an infraction.

The forum should be stricter in order to maintain debate and chat
words like *******, ******, spas, abortion survivors etc should not be tolerated.
if you would not say it to your Mum then it should not be on the forum
Also if anyone uses the word Troll they should be banned for a week.
As with all forums attacks on person should be hammered down.

You can express your opinion and interact with eachother without arguing. Arguing and debating is not the same. Disagreeing does not always have to lead to an argument either. It seems younger members are incapable of this.

It would be better to not call them anything. The inference is that the person was unwanted and somehow supernaturally survived an abortion and was thereafter brought up by the mother who did not want it?
Its not the wording but the leap of faith involved to conjure up the insult.

I can't speak for all the staff, but personally, there's a line with arguments that shouldn't be crossed on here. Arguments and debates are healthy, but when people start insulting each other because of a difference of opinions, and you've got teams of people ganging up on each other... that shouldn't be happening. The best way to deal with it is to close the thread to prevent more replies being posted, and explain why, then hand out infractions to any particular rule offenders. At the end of the day, the site has rules, whether you agree with them or not, that you should abide by when you sign up, and when these are smashed, then you should accept your punishment.
That's for me anyway, and I'm sure other mods/admins will agree.

People are being silly now.
When me and Sia were first made mods we were very strict.
I feel thats what the new mods are like, but i think they are doing a great job, at one point (during start of bb9) often i was the only mod on and there was so many people causing trouble it was hard to do it myself, until another came online..
Its great having a few more of them now, they are doing well as there is quite a lot of stupid offensive and unnecessary threads.
It got to lax at one point, people thinking they could get away from anything..

As somebody who has been on a couple of adult forums I think this place is pretty tolerant in many respects. I dont hang around long enough to pay too much attention but Ive seen mods baited in ways that would have gotten permanent bans for sure elsewhere. I've also witnessed outrageous homophobic insults that would be perm banned elswhere. Not just a paltry few days.
Ok Ive seen a couple of threads closed for debatable reasons but thats a judgement call. Somebody has to make it.
But its good for members like Jack to keep questioning how the wheels turn here. As long as he's doing it from a genuine place then it's all good. Im not here enough to really give a monkeys. But he is and seems to really care about the place and how it's run.

See the points me and Tom made in the thread, because no one's saying that they were disappointed that thousands of people weren't killed.
People would not have been watching if they didn't think anything was going to happen. People were watching waiting for something to happen. Whilst its good that noone is harmed, I think most people are disappointed they didn't see anything at all whether or not they admit it. Its kind of like when you slow down on a motorway when theres a crash on the other side, and can't wait to tell someone about it. You don't consider for a second about the people involved in the crash ...
Anyway I don't think its getting any stricter, I just think there have been more moronic events lately than usual

I agree completely. It dosn't fundamentally make you a bad person but watching the news is a voyeuristic activity. News channels got huge ratings the day of 9/11 because it was an event. It was a spectacle. One derived directly from human misery. And by god, people sat watching that all day. Were the people watching the 9/11 coverage in Scunthorpe watching soley to keep updated in case Al Quabadeda set their sights on Scunthorpe? I highly doubt it.

Oh you never laugh at old people when falling, thats a crime against humanity :nono:

But I bet you'd still watch it happen. ;)
Even if they do its still funny, especially if they seriously damage their fringe when they fall

Schadenfreude is the word to describe that. We all love to watch others suffer - from silly little things like falling over, to crashing and burning to death. It's human nature. Nothing to be ashamed of.

Yeah.
Why do we listen to depressing music or films that we know will make us feel depressed? Why, when we have the feeling our partner is cheating, do we feel the need to check their inbox and discover their dirty little secret when we know it will break our heart?
It's subconscious behaviour. We can deny it all we like, but we like to suffer and we like to watch others suffer too.

01-03-2010, 03:38 PM
I'm trying to think of comparisons, the only one I can think of from the past was Harry's first graphics shop. Plenty of 'bullying' like behaviour went on in that thread, and no posts were deleted, even though numerous posts from mods were made, and it took 28 pages before the thread was eventually closed.
That's unheard of now.
Yes I agree with that post (Maybe as it has my name, You never know). There was a few 'bullies' in that thread and locking of it was partly my option. Other graphics shops were locked for other reasons. But yet again I was at fault also by being a 'diva' as it were. They failed looking back now. Never again.
People hate to admit they find bad things funny because they care to much about what others think.

I think what you are talking about is curiosity - which is based on fear - but it is far too sweeping a statement to say that subconciously we all like to see others suffer in any serious kind of way!

Without this, You've Been Framed would not exist, and that is a classic TV show.
I dread to think how many babies and young kids lives have been put at risk because daddy wanted to win £500 by sending in a "hilarious" video clip of his baby somersaulting off a swing or falling headfirst off a highchair.
Stupid irresponsible show. And faker than Pammys t*ts.

Your subconscious as in, say, the thoughts that never get thunk [?!]. Your conscious mind is made up of thoughts you decided to drag up from the subconscious. That's who you are. All those other junk thoughts and who you are not, they stay down in the subconscious. Who knows, it could be in my subconscious to be a murderer. That shouldn't shock you. What matters is what makes it to the conscious state and the choices you make. That defines who you are.

Because the masses are dumb. Wasn't that long ago that public hangings were all the rage. No doubt they'd still pull in the crowds if brought back.
Personally, seeing people, especially children, get hurt just makes me cringe. And Im a huge horror film fan! But real suffering is different.

So how could anybody possibly know what is in our subconscious mind If they haven't been thought at all?

Your dreams, for instance, are often a result of your subconscious slipping in and taking control when you fall asleep.

even if neurological scientists can see what thoughts are in your subconscious, every person is different so they still couldn't say for definite that every person enjoys watching others suffer unless they've tested every person (or whatever they do)

They can't see specific thoughts. It's not like a cystal ball nestling in the basement of a neuroscience lab. But evolution has afforded us all certain things. Girls have vaginas. Men have dicks. We all share certain thought patterns and whatnot. Amongst them, the instinctual ability to take pleasure from human suffering.
It's not a case of 'everyone is different'. Everyone is different, yes, consciously speaking. But we are not consciously speaking, here.
Why do children have an instinctual fear of monsters? Because in the early stages of human evolution, our predecessors were snatched away in the jaws of cougars at night.

You're missing the point. I can see why the threads were locked/infractions were handed out. I can see that.
All I'm trying to say is that:
A) The forum has become stricter than it was
B) It's a Big Brother forum, which is related to adult content, as I've already been through a thousand times.
Couldn't have put that any ****ing better. How I wish I could have seen the edited bits, though :(
But its good for members like Jack to keep questioning how the wheels turn here. As long as he's doing it from a genuine place then it's all good. Im not here enough to really give a monkeys. But he is and seems to really care about the place and how it's run.
Exactly, and thanks

Nah, I think that's masochistic behaviour, which we all have a natural tendency to partake in from time to time. And then yeah, there's a sadistic element in all humans, which is more pronounced in some individuals.

Nah Stu, you're talking about the fear reflex there. We laugh at people falling because at first it gives us a shock and we're in fear of them injuring themselves but then when we see that they're ok we laugh at the whole experience out of relief. It's the bodies natural reaction.
But taking pleasure in actual real suffering is a totally different thing.

I said James always thinks his right and if he isn't, the thread gets locked/post gets removed. This was regarded as an insult and was worth three infraction points.
And proving my point better than I ever could myself, of course.

Jack I understand where your coming from now, you know why infractions were given and threads were close which is cool. Last night was a good example of the forum being too strict though which I never really saw. Chat and games posts dont add to your count as apparently there is too much spamming, and although post counts dont matter its just a silly thing to do (spamming in other places now, its just a bit of fun keeping track of post counts?). He then allowed it again, then stopped it after a troll came on and Mark banned Jaye for no reason but he was being patronising to her. Then for making silly threads being wound up me and Jess got 5 infraction points which is a crazy amount (mine were removed though as it was a first time offence).
So the forum can be very lenient at times but also very strict when it wants to be, I conclude it has a menstrual cycle. :)
