U2 were the biggest earning act in the US last year.

Bono and co made $109 million (£71 million) from record sales, touring and royalties, according to Billboard's Top 40 Money Makers (http://www.billboard.com/news?tag=nav#/news/money-makers-page-4-1004071203.story) list.

The rest of the top five was made up by Bruce Springsteen (http://www.thisisbigbrother.com/artists/bruce-springsteen) ($57.6 million), Madonna (http://www.thisisbigbrother.com/artists/madonna) ($47.2 million), AC/DC (http://www.thisisbigbrother.com/artists/acdc) ($43.6 million) and Britney Spears (http://www.thisisbigbrother.com/artists/britney-spears) ($38.8 million).

Coldplay (http://www.thisisbigbrother.com/artists/coldplay) were the biggest earning UK band, raking in $27.3 million, while the late Michael Jackson (http://www.thisisbigbrother.com/artists/michael-jackson) grossed $17.3 million.

It is the fourth edition of the chart-compiler's annual countdown of the highest earners in music.

The organisation's formula for working out the list is "top secret" but is based around money earned from all methods of selling music, along with publishing and touring.
