Northern ireland is still part of the UK

Not really. It's a governmental fact, sure, an invisible fact, but you cant litteraly say she is his queen. She's just this oldie living far away from him in a house worth a lot more money. 'Queen' is just a word. A title. If no connection exists between the title and Paddy then she means **** all to him, really.

While she is an oldie etc is true, by nature of the fact she is Queen of the country he resides in she is still his queen. He may not like that fact, may disagree with the idea of the monarchy, may even disagree that Northern Ireland should still part of the UK. Thats immaterial, she is still his queen whether he wants her to be or not.

I have to disagree. Again, on paper she is the Queen, but if she means nothing to you, she's sweet **** all, really. And the term his Queen is a bit patronizing towards him in that light, suggesting the Queen's domination over her loyal subjects, of which he does not count himself a member.

Seriously, just try that line in a republican pub in the north and see would they agree with you. What's written on paper means nothing compared to what's in your heart. In my mind if you live in NI but consider yourself Irish, then you are Irish.

His Queen is useless without any true connection. It's just a byte on a computer. Ink on paper. Files in a building. To that extent yeah, it's a fact.

No that's Spitfire. He used to be a regular years ago. Bit over the top with the patriotism alright.

Nothing wrong with being proud of your country but over the top patriotism baffles me. Like people who genuinly think their country is the best in the world coz' that's where they were born. People who actually let their patriotism govern every aspect of their life and hobbies.

Nationalism is a scourge. It is the measles of humanity.

Yeah right as soon as it came up as a point of contention the Ulster Unionists said "no problem thats alright". I seem to remember Unionists denouncing proposals to remove the Oath of Allegiance. In the end common sense and political pressure won out.

Maybe it was considered to be a relatively small price to pay on the path for peace.

I never said he had to swear allegiance to her, no one does. Except currently he lives in a country that is part of her realm. The laws on statute he lives by are in her name. Yes YOU dont other people probably will.....hence all those jokes that we posted a few weeks back.....like i was saying lighten up a bit.....

:bored:

''lighten up a bit''

I will act how I feel. I am always honest about my feelings on here and I dont feel that you should fake them for anyone. There might be a few things you might not like which I might find funny (Not going to have a list game).

You see, this really reflects more on how you feel about Northern Ireland than Northern Ireland itself, you know? It's interesting.

It doesnt reflect on how I feel about N Ireland at all. Its merely a comment on reality not loyalties. One day hopefully the problem will be resolved to everyones satisfaction and everyone will get along nicely.

It does of course. It's generates and propagates that superiority complex that the people of Ireland have always felt that the British exude from time to time, especially when you were so quick to defend the policies that the UK introduced during the Troubles. Devolution has returned to Northern Ireland and it should be allowed to function on it's own without having to bow before the Queen.... that's Patrick's right.

My god this thread is one car crash after another.

Perhaps not the right choice of words, but whatever.

I don't care if it's relevant or whatever - but you would have to be incredibly ignorant of current affairs not to know who Princess Diana was or how she died - it's constantly talked about (thank you, Daily Express <_<), it was all over the news for years...and don't use the young bull**** - I was 7 and at Butlins when she died, I was hardly going to stop jumping in the ballpool and cut myself to Candle in the Wind.

And Patrick was 2 when she died. I only started gaining a knowledge of current affairs when I was in my young teens myself - like he is now.

No far from it, it highlights your own prejudices and preconceived notions is all. You dont really know anything about me or my beliefs. Quick to defend which policies?

Regarding the British troops sent in to pacify the situation. There's other decisions that they made that were face palms of the highest order. I have no preconceived notions.... I've just seen how the British like to regard the Northern Irish and Irish on many occassions.

Its obviously not a real article, look at the bottom.
Funny though

Yeah, it's a satire on papers like Daily Express etc. that always printing conspiracies about Diana. The Morocco bit is probably a reference to Madeleine McCann sightings stories.

Yes it was knee jerk reactions, there were other options that could have been undertaken, however the decisions taken were believed to be the best option at the time. Same as the decision to send in Paras in a peacekeeping role because their war role was of a similar nature. We all know what a cock up that was and the ensuing tragedy that occured because of it.

Its easy to look back with hindsight and see where things went wrong, where incorrect decisions were made. However at the time the decisions made were made with the the intent of remedying the situation not escalating it.

Nah, not with you on this at all. Can't blame it all on the soldiers that they sent.
