Whilst I agree the owner of the property is a total bigoted moron - there isn't really a 'right' to stay at someone's house. Though it is discrimination I guess.
And arista, 'New Labour's UK' is a hell of a lot more tolerant and equal than it was prior to it. I'd much rather have Brown, whose party has legislated civil partnerships, tackled homophobia and fought for other gay rights (such as adoption and the silly blood donation thing) - than Cameron, who has time and time again voted against gay adoption.
I wouldn't let them stay at my B&B, look at the state of them
It's not someones house - it's a business. A legally binding business. If you wish to set up a business, you leave your personal beliefs at the door.

Was it because I'm straight?
Was it because I'm white?
Was it because I'm healthy?
No. It's because I'd lost my *****ing wallet in a club.

Im really not sure what to think of this...
maybe the owners of the bnb shouldn't run a hotel, or call it a "CHRISTIAN HOTEL" at least then gays will know they probably shouldn't stay there.. I'm all for breaking boundarys but most christians and gays... don't really agree with each other..
It seems the owner of the BnB handled it well... She shouldn't be running a BnB is my opinion! :P

yeah ok Arista, your childish phobia about Christianity does not help the thread not cover you in much glory.
if some woman minister gave you a hiding once for peeing in a rosebush then fess up and move on
When people talk about "choosing" to be gay, its not speaking about waking up one day and thinking "I know, I think I'm going to choose to bum men". Its an innate choice made by social surroundings in the first couple of years of life. The only reason that gay people can only remember being gay is because their memories don't go back far enough.
I don't think its a coincidence that a lot of men with no strong father figure turn out to be gay.

Sexual preferences and proclivity can change with time however and so some choice is in there.

Did the lady say specifically it was her religion or just her convictions? "She later admitted she had turned the couple away because it was her policy not to let same sex couples share a room."
if it is her policy how is that any different to have a policy to stop say school kids going into a newsagent 5 at a time, or a policy that says that members of the public cant use your staff canteen and so on?
The pair said they "were treated like lepers" - really, is that what being turned away from a b&b has become?
Mr Black said: 'When we got out of the car she was immediately distant and unfriendly and then she said, "it's a double room", and we said "yes". - perhaps she was not distant and unfriendly perhaps they were.
"We said it was illegal to discriminate against people who stay in hotels because that's all we knew at the time and she said it was her private home and it was against her convictions."
It is her private home and a business but surely she has the final decision who stays, end of? - what if Peter Docherty and Ami Winehouse arrived - is she not allowed to say no to them as well?

Stop bringing religion into it LT. It has literally nothing to do with that, as much as Arista would like to think otherwise. The fact is she discriminated against them based on their sexuality. Private home bollocks - it's a B and B and as such has to adhere to the laws of the land. And trust you to compare them to the most outrageous double act you could get your hands on.

So where does the buck stop, LT? Should Christians have the right, based on religious belief, to refuse people all sorts of services? Should a Christian, if he saw fit, refuse me entry to a gig because I was a non believer? Is it okay for a Christian to refuse to let an unmarried couple with a kid into a theme park?
Also, plenty of scientists believe genetics have an important role to play in a persons sexuality also. You say there is no proof beyond reasonable doubt that people are gay as a right of birth, but the vice versa also applies. It's funny how you demand scientific proof for certain things, but it doesn't matter for others .

re the science thing. I am not asking for proof just stating what we currently know. As stated in the other thread using Science to disprove religion is not valid.

LT I think the word you were looking for reference the religion thing is bigotry, you can be a bigot without being illegal, and judging by reports not only in the mail but elsewhere it definately looks as if she was discriminatory on the grounds of their sexuality, which unfortunately for her is illegal.
She owns and runs a small business, it is wise when doing so not only to be aware of the law and how it applies to her business but also to have a standard excuse prepared for when you refuse customers who turn up and offend your sensibilities. e.g. she could have said, without looking outraged, "I am really sorry but it appears as if you have been double booked, we only realised when the other people turned up and booked in, could I arrange alternate accomodation in another guest house etc, at no extra charge" etc.
Whilst it isnt an offence to be stupid, it is an offence to be discriminatory and ignorant enough to make statements to others including the police and the press stating that yes you do discriminate against same sex couples sharing the same bed.
Hoisted on her own petard methinks.

Ugh, that is terrible!
I'd have put up more of an argument though, there's no way I'd let anyone get away with that sorta discrimination.
Idiots.

New Labour that Run the UK
could not care lees,
which is so Typical of them.
There is no conclusive biological evidence to suggest that is is a born with situation. The "science" here is poor.
I can't believe you've just said that. Being gay isn't a bad thing, but nobody would choose to be gay. Do you realise how much easier it would be just to be straight. The fact you think it's a choice disgusts me.

Whilst I agree the owner of the property is a total bigoted moron - there isn't really a 'right' to stay at someone's house. Though it is discrimination I guess.
And arista, 'New Labour's UK' is a hell of a lot more tolerant and equal than it was prior to it. I'd much rather have Brown, whose party has legislated civil partnerships, tackled homophobia and fought for other gay rights (such as adoption and the silly blood donation thing) - than Cameron, who has time and time again voted against gay adoption.
haha DISCRIMINATION IT SAYS! LISTEN MATE YOUR LUCKY YOU DONT LIVE IN SOMALIA WHERE THEY STONE GAYS TO DEATH, IF YOUR NOT HAPPY OVER HERE YOU KNOW WHERE TO GO!

It may be someone's home however it is being used as a business, therefore it has to follow regulations. They failed to comply with the Law in that they discriminated on the grounds of the couples sexuality.
You cant expect them to be able to claim business rates on utilities, reclaim deductable tax expenses , maintenance to the building etc in fact lots of, in some cases, quite sizeable perks for running their home as a business and then not comply with the law for how that business must treat people.

What i said is true, unless you have conclusive evidence to suggest otherwise?
you cannot be disgusted, you are just misinformed and wish to believe a certain ideal that would suit your pov.
