Women are more likely to report ill health than men - why is this? What are men scared of?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/8588686.stm
Is it just 'ostriches burying their heads in the sand' syndrome?
Men like being in charge, even of their own bodies. I guess being ill is a sign of weakness.

Isn't the real weakness - being afraid of looking weak?

Good god, my man is never away from the doctors...a sniffle and he is convinced he is dying.

Same here, funny thing is, most things do pass in a day or two too :p

That has nothing to do with being scared. On the contrary. Its the fact that we dont usually consider anything an illness unless youre about to die or something. I know thats how I am. I cant remember the last time I went to the hospital, or even told people I was ill. And its because most of the time its not necessary.
Women however, have a higher threshold for pain. But they do tend to go to the doctors more often, which is to me just women being more practical, and more cautious than men.

I think we are all frightened by the reality of illness - but I think women tend to confront it head on as a preventative measure - whereas men tend to run away from it, and pretend it isn't happening. Women are more realistic about it!

Wombai. Just kidding. I suppose we just avoid anything that may result in us accepting a weakness of any kind. We prefer to avoid such scenarios. Damn testosterone fecking with our minds.

I think a big part of it with women is that, as mothers, they fear not being around to look after their children - so they become more proactive at tackling the problem!

Yeah, they are more fussy and reactive when it comes to illnesses. Maternal instincts. We just sit around and have another pint to numb the pain!

Uh not exactly, I just dont think its nessesary wasting mine and the doctors time just for him/her to tell me what I already knew, I'll get better in a few days
Obviously, if its something I deem 'serious' then I will go to the doctor, though both my parents worked in the medical profession, so I might as well go see them and ask what they think, rather than taking time out of my day to make an appointment

That is the point though - men tend to ignore symptoms of more serious illness - hoping they will go away! It is common knowledge - and the medical profession have attempted health promotion for more common male cancers - in an attempt to get men to check themselves and go to the doctor!

Most men live their lives in a state of denial, that's what it is.
Women are better at facing problems head on and doing what needs to be done.

Traditionally and sterotypically being ill is like being weak, just like showing emotion is being weak, men are stereotypically supposed to be strong, brave and not supposed to cry. Its all changed now, you dont need to be macho all the time.
But they want to be, so we want to be in control.

Women are just naturally more in touch with their bodies. You have periods early on which almost forces you to be. And your bodies are also baby making machines so you have a natural instinct to take care of it more.
Then there is the male ego. Again, they are instinctively more macho and prone to not admitting weakness. Plus they dont want their bits groped and anus probed by strangers. Well, not for medical reasons anyhow. *wink*
But the reasons are mostly primal, instinctive and down to good ole Mother nature. You can pretty much blame her for every bad trait in men. Im sure you agree, Wombai?

The famous 'nature/nuture' debate! It is a bit of both - but mother nature only plays a small part - the rest is down to good old ego!

As someone who has had the misfortune of testicular cancer and watched a couple of the guys on my Clinical Oncology rotation die, it is not that simple. It took the medical profession 3 years and a lot of me pressing them before they diagnosed my tumour. Contrary to the accepted wisdom, having a tumour doesn't suddenly make you as Viz's Buster Gonad.
As someone who has been thru the ringer, I can honestly tell you that the NHS is in flux and it is not really a male irrational response to hope 'it goes away' as they're not geared-up for many or the male cancers.
In a perfect world they'd have testicle screening clinics just as they have breast screening clinics for women. But the world if far from perfect.

You were sensible and did the right thing. Hopefully the younger generation of men are becoming more aware of these things and facing such things head-on as you did! You set a good example!
The NHS need to be better prepared for these things as well - and yes I agree that testicle screening clinics would be a good idea. However, breast screening is not available across the board - it is only generally for women over 50 as that is when it is more common.

I don't think I'm any sort of shining example but I take some of your points WOMBAI.
If the statistic is that cancer will directly impact on 1 in 3 during their lives then blokes have to realise that isn't 1 in 3 women but people! I further realise that many blokes have a problem with the idea of having to drop their trousers and allow a stranger to inspect.
As you/I have mentioned, it's better that than end up dead.

Girls always go to the doctors when they have a little problem..
I was taken to the doctors as a child when i was 3.
I was made to go doctors at age 11 when i had an ear infection on holiday.
And i get hayfever tablets from doctors most years.
But other than that ive never been..
Ive been in pain but never thought to go doctors.

Your'e young without many health problems! Hope if and when they develop you have enough sense to go get things checked out!
Girls/women in general are more aware of the consequences of health problems, whilst in general more boys/men are more inclined to turn a blind eye, hoping symptoms will go away.
Women in general are not just 'hypochondriacs' as you are implying! From experience, and generally accepted as common knowledge - men are more likely to be 'demanding' and divaish when ill! In other words - they make more of a fuss about being ill!

But what you don't seem to realise is that by going to the doctors and sorting any problems at an early stage saves lots of money, and doctors' precious time, in the long-run!
Many serious conditions are preventable by early intervention - and if a person ignores the early warning signs and becomes really ill - that costs not only the NHS and the taxpayer a lot more money - it could also cost that person their life. Lecture over!

LOL Zipster, I've never been to the GP in the last 5 years............last time I phoned for appointment with a flu thing that was getting me down and not clearing-up, they said "we can give you an appointment in 3 weeks time, Tuesday or Wednesday?"
Aye don't bother thought me, I'll either be dead by then and have my Clinical Oncology appointment in 2 weeks where they X-Ray and CT scan everything anyway.
Lack of access to NHS puts a lot of guys off - until you're in you're out if that makes sense.
