Muslim anger over 'mosques' on firing range

Army chiefs apologised Thursday after Muslims voiced anger at the use of model buildings they claim resemble mosques on a military firing range.

The Bradford Council for Mosques called for the domed model structures to be taken down immediately at the Bellerby firing range at Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire.

"It is so obvious. Even a non-Muslim recognised the significance. The first person who raised the issue with us was a non-Muslim," said the Muslim group's head Mohammed Saleem Khan.

"It is clearly very offensive. We feel there should be an apology and they should be removed straight away. If it was a mistake it should be removed straight away."

The Ministry of Defence said the model structures -- square yellow blocks with green domes -- were "generic Eastern buildings" and were not used as target practice.

But said a spokesman: "We apologise for any offence that we may have caused.

"It was never our intention for these generic structures to look like or replicate mosques, only to provide a setting similar to operational environments in which our personnel could train.

"We are seeking a meeting with representatives from the Muslim community to hear their concerns in order to discuss the way forward."

The Army should explain the purpose of the "buildings", the purpose of the range and then maybe, just maybe there may not be so much offense.

I'm sorry - but to me it seems like Muslims overreacting again! It does make sense that the buildings should resemble the territory that our soldiers are currently fighting in! It needs to be kept real!

Can't be doing with these way oversensitive people! Our troops safety is far more important than the Muslims' sensitivities. Who do they think they are - telling our Army what sort of 'props' they can use in their training programmes?

Hope they are not taken seriously - in these way too pc times! It is about time more people objected to that!

The buildings themselves are actually the hardened area(buildt out of railway sleepers) on an MMTR (military moving target range) the targets move from behind the building on one side of the target lane to the building the other side, soldiers engage the target between the buildings, and because they cant see the target behind the building dont actually fire into the building.

They look nothing like a real mosque.

These sort of reactions by Muslims do nothing to help their cause! Rightly or wrongly - I can't help but think that many Muslims are ultra-sensitive due to hugh chips on their shoulders - and/or - they are control freaks who want to tell the rest of us what to do and how to think! Think you are being a tad oversensitive about this! When referring to a group of people (any group) they are often referred to as they! You can't keep saying Muslims, or whatever, in every sentence - it isn't correct grammar and sounds odd!
