THE Top 40 could be consigned to history with secret plans at Radio 1 to develop a new pop chart.

The BBC has employed web programmers to come up with a rundown that collates data from streaming sites, Facebook, MySpace and YouTube.

This will then be combined with traditional sales figures to make a list which truly reflects the nation's tastes.

Sounds like a cracking idea to me.

A source at the Beeb explained: "The way people consume music is so vast that just relying on sales data now seems old hat."

The application, likely to be launched later this year, could be a start to get great new bands in a "real" chart.

Sounds pretty good to me...

I'd just hope they could collate data from Spotify and Last FM as well, as that'd really change things I think.

They have to change with the times and adapt to the way that people listen to music.

Yeah, they would need to limit some stuff aswell, i mean otherwise people would just have a song on repeat for 24 hours.....

I read a while back they were planning to involve sites like spotify and we7, but aparently it'd be a few years before it could become incorporated :(

Collecting data from anything other than actual sales(download/cd) or radio play is open to corruption. We've all seen how internet polls are manipulated.

I was thinking someone should do this soon glad they are.

Who actually buys Singles and that **** nowadays

Although I think it would of made a hell of alot more sense if they just got Music from Youtube and Last.FM

Really who uses Facebook for music?

And why would we want Myspace **** over here, leave it in the states I say.

But anyway good idea Radio1.

Perhaps if they took sites like last.fm and spotify into account. But YouTube and MySpace? that's no representation of what people actually like.

tbh I think Youtube is more than FB.

Alot of people, millions infact use Youtube to listen to music so of course they like it.

Millions actually. Check the figures.

If youre collecting data based on freeware or popularity polls then its more corruptable. Which is my point.

Well I can go on to YouTube right now and look up a Leona Lewis video, maybe I want to check something, just curious. Doesn't mean a like it and certainly doesn't mean I would buy it. And couldn't I get a group of people and constantly refresh the page? There are so many ways that it could be fixed, it's ridiculous,

Remember when Avril Lavines Girlfriend music video was constandtly bumped and became (At the time) the most viewed YouTube video ever with over 120,000,00 hits.

Look at Lady Gaga Bad Romance hits, Its shocking.

And you see how they can fix things just like that. If you want streming sites then look at 'N Dubz gate' on our TiBB chart. Easy as pi.
