If you break a rule, you'll generally receive an infraction.

Braden

Many different things, from making duplicate accounts to calling someone a fat ****ing ****.

Bigbrotherin
02-05-2010, 09:03 PM
No, that's not what I mean guys. An infraction is the act of committing a misdemeanor, how can you receive a misdemeanor? It just doesn't make sense.

Stacey.
02-05-2010, 09:05 PM
for insulting and stuff.
in my case 'ignorant point of view'
and 'taking obsession too far'

but yeah.

What I mean is, an infraction is not a punishment, it is an act that provokes a punishment.

I suppose it does provoke it, but it mainly leads up to you getting a ban by how many you get.

Your user CP.

Anyway, what I'm getting at is the use of the term on this forum is incorrect.

Not in terms of the forum, in terms of the word itself. The word infraction means misdemeanor, not punishment.

The front page of the User CP, it won't show if you've never received one.

You should really speak to an admin about this, maybe they'll explain better.

Doesn't everyone find mistakes funny? Perhaps it's just a geek thing.

Though this topic wasn't to enlighten anyone, just to point out what appears to be a mistake.

Nope, just as I didn't say you couldn't not punctuate.

Before someone points out my mistake, the double negative, it was deliberate.

Catch up with how the word is being used.

As far as I'm aware infraction is only used to mean penalty in some US states and it usually refers to parking offenses.

Yes, I know, but dictionaries aren't updated according to how TIBB defines a term.

Where do you get the impression I did? I just saw the suggestion forum and thought I'd suggest changing the word used, because, to most people, infraction means a minor legal wrong doing.

GypsyGoth
02-05-2010, 09:41 PM

You are right, however as the meaning becomes better know, the dictionary will be updated.

Bigbrotherin

Until then, if then comes, and I doubt it, to those who only recognise the dictionary definition i.e. the one used outside certain US states and internet forums, especially those only aware of it's primary usage, it doesn't really make sense.

Well we are on an internet forum so it makes sense to use it. Just like you used "Facepalms" it means nothing in the dictionary, yet here it is understood.

Ok try this one, see if it sits any better with you. You dont actually receive an infraction per se, you receive points for the infractions you have committed, (infraction as in violating a rule). The forum records these penalties/warnings under a section called Infractions.

The word infraction may have been decided by the designers of the Vbulletin program that is used as the interface for the forum.

As opposed to saying you received a penalty for your infraction of the rules, this changes in shorthand to you received an infraction.

Only if most forums use it, and so far I've only come across one in my decade and a half online.

So, assuming 50% of those mentions are from separate forums, a few dozen thousand in a million and assuming most of those first few results are the more established of forums to mention it, due to how google weights website authority, a few dozen thousand random non-important ones at that.

Maybe the syntax 'received a notification of an infraction' would be more to your liking?

For what it's worth though, I don't like the use of the word infraction - too technical, and not used often - I would just call it a warning.

Very true, I dont like the censorship policy over there, the in your face adverts, the page layouts, or the size of print, I am getting old and very very grumpy so the small print gets me going.

I don't think it is really anything to get confused about. It's just a word at the end of the day.. and puts the point across pretty much the same as other words.
