I thought it was just to test the house and tasks or whatever see what works and what doesnt?

Just to set up the house make sure it all works with the camera and mic placements etc theyll probably make it less climbable after last year too

As others have said, its to test the camera angles and microphones, tasks and that. For the guinea pigs, its like they are housemates. Was'nt Dale from BB9 a guinea pig?

Imogen was a guinea pig from BB7.
The camera angles in BB10 were awful, especially on launch night.

one set live in the house for a day so that they can check camera angles and microphone placements. there is no interaction with big brother, they just use the house
another set live there for 5 days, and there is a dress rehearsal of an eviction. this time it's much more like a mini series, with BB talking to the housemates, and then testing out the tasks.
I know that before BB3, the changed the sofas 3 times because they weren't comfy enough/ didn't look right on camera.
In BB6, the housemates all came out in rashes on their legs when they sat on the sofas, so they replaced them with the orange ones!

Wait so some people that are guinea pigs before a season starts end up being on the actual show? So they already see the house and meet people who might be on it?

Yeah that's right, hate the when HM's were sitting in the kitchen cause you couldn't see them all, when they were all talking, it did my head in, & TBH i hated BB10 kitchen anyway, i thought it was horrible.

Yeah its basically for all the reasons you've all already said above. Not all guinea pigs ultimately become genuine housemates on later series' but its certainly an advantage.

How do you get to become one though?

Well I heard something like.. Sylvia and Stuart from bb9 were guinea pigs before going into the house so they must have seen the house before hand? unless I miss heard something.. because I heard something like Sylvia and Stuart met before and shagged a few weeks before going onto BB.. :S

Cheers, hadn't signed on since last summer, lolz.

Some guinea pigs are chosen from people who auditioned but didn't quite make it.

If I can remember back to last season it was... Charlie and Marcus who had been 'test-run' stand-ins or 'guinea pigs',
but,
it was the previous summer. So they were 'testers' for BB9.
(does anyone else remember this exactly?)
And then for some reason I think Bea said she had been a 'guinea pig' for the BB7 season.
I don't remember past that but yeah I think maybe Dale and Stewart in the previous.
Cant remember any others past that although I'm sure there has been.
I look at it this way:
- Yes, they are testing camera angles, mic checks, safety and practical use etc,
but,
no doubt they also use it for exactly what it became sometimes - a backup pool of already vetted HMs.
How the hell they missed the epic force of terror that was Bea I do not know. Goes to show the 'B Pool' may well have the truly awesome potential.
I think Charlie turned out alright too. Then again he needed a Rodrigo or else he may well have been a total dud.

Thanks Glenn, it took me ages, its meant to have an extract of every eye so far, well every Daniel Eatock eye anyway, I thought it was crap personally, lolz.
I'm pretty sure Imogen was a guinea pig on a season before BB7, can't confirm this though, just have a recollection.

Yes, that's most probably the best answer. They want to see if there are any blind spots, and of course it's good camera training. :)
