I've no problem with a referendum - after all which party has ever actually taken account of one that didn't produce the results it wanted? I bet that hasn't gone down well with a lot of the Tory party.

In a way yes, however Clegg will lose credibility in the eyes of the general public if he does try to play one side against the other.
He did announce before the election campaigns began he would not use PR as a bargaining point, when he negotiated with the party who gained the most seats if the election was hung.
The announcement of Labour and the Liberals opening negotiations may have an effect in that the Conservatives may feel under pressure to offer a few more concessions if they see power slipping away from them, the lib-dems not controlling the announcement of the negotiations may feel under pressure not to lose public opinion and credibility and accept a reasonable deal which may have been less than they actually wanted to.

Yes New Labour are Corrupt as Hell.
They are practically all corrupt - corruption is not exclusive to one party! They all abuse their priviledges, given half the chance, looking to line their own pockets before those of the ordinary voters! Labour are no better or worse than the Conservatives in that department!
Angus
10-05-2010, 08:16 PM
And yet Labour swept to power on the promise that THEY and they alone would abolish all sleaze and corruption in parliament instead of which they will go down in history as THE most corrupt and dishonest government we have ever had. If there were no other reason than the illegal war in Iraq (which Labour supporters conveniently neglect to mention when eulogising about them) that would be sufficient reason for them to be kicked out of power - pity no criminal charges have been brought yet.

Clegg must say Today which way he is Going.
He can not sit on this for weeks.
If Clegg can Not control his own party
then we will never ever have
him in power.
This is about Democracy
It is Important to British and Scottish and Welsh and North Irish.

"This is about Democracy"
Dems can and should talk to both sides. The idea that the lib dems have betrayed the conservatives is laughable. Libs dems must make the best deal they can. Only talking to one side gives them zero negotiating power...
People are saying a lib/conservative party is more stable because it has greater numbers. Rubbish... since the lib dems are politically closer to labor than the cons so in te event of them forming a coalition there would be far less in fighting with a lib/lab coalition than a lib/con coalition.

Difficult but not impossible my antipodean FM. Wilson managed fine in 1974 with only 301 seats until the general election six months later which returned him with a small majority. What's more there were only 4 seats between Wilson and Heath. This time round Labour finished with 49 LESS SEATS. A minority Conservative government is far better, AND infinitely more democratic than a rainbow coalition of LOSERS.
Funny how interested you are in British politics, personally I couldn't give a toss about the Aussie government, you could all go to hell in a handcart for all I care! Yes the Radio 5 Political Reporter John P.
has said this is the meeting that should bring out a Deal
of Conserv-LibDem.
I agree Dezzy
it gives LibDem more Co -Power
so a answer is needed today.
If they Milk this on another 48 hours
it will look stupid.
Clegg can pick a Party
as his Party are Pushing him to do it.
75% of LibDem MP's jump into the New Conservative Deal
that gives them better Power.
If Clegg walks away from both
then he will be Hated.

center left votes
lab/lib plus sdlp = 318
right wing fascist votes( :P)
con/DUP plus unionist = 315
this is why lab can form a minority government while cons cannot. They won't get bills through. That BS about 1974 means nothing.
more people votes centre left.
Cameron didn't get a majority despite his dream run because the MAJORITY of people DIDN'T want him.

Tony Blair went to a public school, I dont recall the labourites making a hoohah over that.
And all this class war rubbish being printed in rags like the Guardian over the past few days annoys me. Can someone kindly explain to me what's wrong with the leader of our country being taught at one of the best schools in the country? Is that wrong? Does it make him somehow unable to connect to poorer people in society?
It's a load of crap by those obsessed with class distinction and using it to cast aspersions on the Tories.
I have a working class background growing up on a council estate and Id rather have posh people in power than state educated, champagne socialists like John Prescott who shags his mistress in the back rooms of the house of commons and plays croquet at Chequers whilst he was left in charge of the country.

If we can maybe discount Maggie and Tony as the worst epitomys of political power then maybe we can start again in this disagreement.
I don't know where to start if you don't know the distiction how Scotland and England voted TBH and can't be bothered explaining. Scottish Labour have more Phds than the England MPs collectively, but it's not a competition.

Absolutely agree. I hate snobs, and that includes reverse snobs who just end up sounding like the envious whingers they are. I, too, was brought up on a council estate, have a working class background, and a healthy respect for education. Apparently it is now a hanging offence, according to the bitter Labour supporters whose crap party LOST, to be privately educated, despite the fact that several senior members of the Labour cabinet sent their bloody sprogs to private schools. Rank hypocrisy.
Labour has always been the politics of envy. It used to be "what we can't have we will deprive others of", but under New Labour it was refined to"Do as I say, not do as a I do".

Ey shagging.. shagging is human nature!! Of course all the politicians will be SHAGGING. Especially David Cameron and Nick Clegg. They are both on cloud 9 at the moment. Their wives will LOVE the power they have and will be giving it to them a lot!!

Ah, take a cold shower love, you're just mightily miffed that the Scots were daft enough to back the losing horse! Practically ALL your MPs now impotent on the OPPOSITION benches Like a load of toothless rottweilers - Lol!
Just noticed on other thread you would like Ed Balls, a privately educated, Oxford graduate as Leader of the Labour Party!

I agree, so what if some people come from a upper class background doesn't make them the spawn of the devil:rolleyes:, although from their point of view Conservatives favour the rich and don't do nothing for the working class which is always being said.

The thing is that in the past 13 years the rich/poor divide has got WIDER instead of narrower, so how can that be explained by a party purporting to represent the working classes? I know I am far worse off now in terms of my lifestyle than I was 13 years ago, for example I used to be able to afford at least one holiday a year, but I haven't had one now for nearly 6 years. Now, because of Labour's profligacy with our economy, the new government has no choice but to implement savage spending cuts (something Labour would also have been forced to do if they had been returned to power).

Never mind Clegg causing the LibDems offence, It's the Tories who should feel offence for having to cosy up with them. BUT if it gets this country back on its feet, its all worth it. This is a major opportunity for the LibDems to have a chance to influence government, in their view for the better, so why on earth are they still whingeing on about their precious party politics that the people of this country so resoundingly rejected at the ballot box?
This may well be the first and only time the LibDems are ever within sniffing distance of No 10 so they should just get on and get the job done.
