I know people make advice threads all the time but seriously sometimes it's people that don't really know you that can help you the most. Although saying this I kinda need people to know me to help me with this.

Right,I have NO clue what I want to do in life. I did one year of a nursing degree which I hated and have been nothing for a year and I want to do a new course in September but I have no clue to do or what career I want in life. So I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of what I might be good at? Like what career/course would suit it? I know it's a bit of a big ask but I could seriously do with any advice you guys might have.

Oh and also if anyone has any idea how to get a job in this economy(or knows of jobs going),that'd be great too. I feel a bit in limbo ever since last summer and I want to get out of it.

Any ideas or advice anyone has will be apperciated :) x

What are your hobbies?

Right now, I could picture you as a journalist.

The best advice I can give you is to take something that could take you in a vast amount of places and to do something you enjoy. It might sound really simple but its helped me in a huge way. I know it's a completely different story but still, I just hope I can help, even if its a tiny bit x

Hobbies-music,reading,internet,fashion,writing. People have told me journalist before but I'm not sure I'm confident enough to do it. I'd have to get something at a magazine or such to be happy.

Thanks Caitlin :) I shall try to figure out something that applies to that.

And LOL Remy,seriously? :p

You should honestly be a journalist, I think you have the rainbow of skills needed for it, just follow your heart and tell yourself that you can do anything if you really try hard enough.

Writing for Heat is like my dream job! I know someone on Twitter who works for Heat and seriously her job is reviewing chick-lit and dramas on telly and Take That CD's,she got to meet Take That for work!

Hmm I shall definitely think more about journalism.

Personally, I recommend getting a part time job, which really, you'll just have to look around for and ask.
If you want to go to college, look on the college you would like to go to's website and look through the courses :D. They do Media courses which you might be interested in, since the stuff ranges from Magazines, Music and TV...

You could try and write a book in your free time. They say everyone has at least one good book in them and you do a lot of reading so I'm sure there's some potential there.

I've tried starting one a few times and given up  Maybe I should try harder.

You could try some volunteer work, could lead into bigger avenues....?

why don't you try a short story first, less commitment involved. then you might find a character you really love and want to develope further.

Yeah I am in a similar situation to you, leave 6th form in June & have NO idea what I want to do. All I can advise is to dabble in various things so you can appreciate what skills you have and what may interest you. Try getting a part-time job for cash, volunteering and work experience in various places :)

You could do a Journalism course at college, and do orienteering at the same time
Orienteering? Why would she want to do orienteering? When did she mention wanting to do Geographical Sport?

I did Journalism and Media at university; however it was only for a term as it wasn't really for me, now I'm stuck in a bit of a rut looking for a job with some sort of decentish future.

The actual course wasn't so bad, if you enjoy writing, Journalism is something you'd most likely love. Confidence shouldn't really be an issue, as that is what the course is there for, to help you ease into journalism slowly.

My own personal advice regarding what you should do if you are still uncertain of something is to just not do it until you are definitely sure it's what you want to do, or you are definitely sure tyhat it's something you're deeply interested in and are not likely to lose interest in.

I made the mistake of just chosing Journalism and Media because I loved media, loved writing, and liked English, therefore it seemed a logical choice, however, my heart just wasn't really in it, therefore it wasn't for me.

Just make sure you're dead certain with whatever you choose to do, you can always go in a couple of years if you think you'll be certain what career you want then rather than now, which is what I plan to do :)

Princess

Thanks KG :) The same happened with me and nursing,I just lost interest, well that and no-one really tells you how hard it is. Hope you figure out what you want to do as well.

Maybe Grey's Anatomy encouraged you to go into the medical profession

And yep Laura, you and Media would be a good match :)

Princess

HAH that's what my dad said! He was like 'Did you only choose nursing cos of Grey's Anatomy' Not as fun as it looks on telly,I can you tell that!

My cousin is a qualified nurse now, works in the biggest hospital in Wales. She said it was so tough, 3 years of essays, placements. She's so glad she stuck to it though because she's where she wanted to be now. (I went with her for her job interview, so I take full credit... hehe) No, but it isn't for everyone and like with alot of things, try it out if it doesn't work, move on. I do think though you should look into Media, Sociology and stuff like that. Good luck with it all though, whatever you decide.

Princess

I think for nursing you have to really want to do it. And for me,it was a case of my CAO(our UCAS) is due in soon,I better put something down, which was really stupid. But anyways,no regrets! Aww thanks Ross :)

Ross

It's okay. If I was not working full-time, I'd have liked to have done Media in College and then onto Uni. I'm happy now being a Team Leader at work, I mean I'm in charge of the Dairy, Meat and Poultry section which takes the most money in the store. Alot of responsibility falls into my hands and I've passed my manager interview which a high percentage, so within a matter of months (depending on how I drive myself) I'll hopefully have a manager's role soon, which comes with more responsibility and ofcourse, bigger pay. I'm excited.

Ross

I do try, it seems to all be paying off now. The retail industry though is so tough, we rely on customers and ofcourse, the customer is always right.

Think I've finally settled on an Arts course consisting of English,Lingiustics and Pyschology. I don't have enough points for most of the Journalism courses and this seems like a broad enough course that I won't be honing in on anything too soon but I might figure out what I want to do and this will help me get into journalism. Plus it seems like would be quite interesting.
