View Full Version : Please review these forum rules and apply them to ours. Thank you.
http://www.digitalperversion.net/gardenofshadows/index.php?topic=4.0
--Member Conduct
Use common courtesy when interacting with other forum members. Harassment, impersonation of someone else, or flame wars will not be tolerated. This site is for mature members and is not censored, however use common sense when posting. Though artistic nudity is allowed, pornographic material is not allowed and will result in administrative action. Basically, don't be a jackass and we won't have any problems.
-- Respect other members: Things like "lurk moar" or dog-piling on new members for every infraction nonsense will not be tolerated. While linking to the appropriate rules post is acceptable, there is no need for ten of you to chime in with "Oooooh you're in trouble~!" or variations thereof after that. Please do not behave like four to six year olds; it hurts.
--Refrain from mini-modding: With number one in mind, we would also like you to refrain from "mini-modding." The rules need to be enforced, yes, but that's why we have moderators in the first place. If you ever find a post that you think is out of line, report it by PMing one of the mods and we'll get to it as soon as we are able.
--Don't be an ass There is a difference between being "snarky" and being a damned ass. Keep in mind that a) not everyone will respond favorably to your oh-so-witty retorts, and b) said retorts are not always appropriate. This is not a carebear forum, but you are expected to at least observe standards of decency (i.e., politeness) when interacting with other members. We're not asking you to walk on eggshells, but napalming one another at random isn't conducive to a healthy community either.
--Cliquish Behavior: Please note that - regardless of post count, perceived or existing contribution, or favor - all members are equal. While it is natural to form bonds with other members of the board, the last thing we want is for cliques to develop. The warning signs are already present; and to be perfectly honest, nothing kills a forum faster than petty infighting and factions formed around some ridiculous notion of entitlement. Garden of Shadows is no more "your" board because you have been a member longer than, say, someone who joined yesterday. The condescension and related asshattery ends as of now.
--Spam: This is covered in the forum rules, so you should have a good idea not to do it. But a little more about what spam is. Padding your post count by adding thank-yous to all the downloads in a forum is spam. Replying to a topic without adding anything of value (such as saying "I agree!" and nothing else) is spam. Posting very short replies to several topics in a short time frame is spam. You should be thinking about your posts before you make them. Please note that spamming is unacceptable in all forums except "Oh the Drama".
-- Attention Seeking: There is no real rule for this, but please note that excessive attention seeking really does not go over very well at GoS. Refrain from making posts just to get attention or highlight how cool you are, as it will cause more negative attention than positive. If you want to make a positive impression, you are more likely to do so by posting thoughtful, coherent posts and following the rules of the forum.

I think admin should stop electing mods that are total non entities. Firstly, they're usually huge push overs, therefore not the best at disciplining. Secondly, they're often not as active as a member who is a well known member with lots of friends. Just because a member is part of a particular group doesn't mean they aren't sensible enough to know the difference between their friends acting like idiots and having a laugh. Chances are if a member has loads of friends on here, they're gonna be on here more often, and be drawn to more threads than someone who floats.

To be honest, I don't think any of our mods are particularly great. As much as I like Vicky, I don't think she is suited to the role of a mod. Neither is Ben, because of the whole BH thing. We just need some new/additional mods to clean the place up really, as well as some new rules that they can actually ENFORCE.

I think that's got something to do with lack of mod activity and efficiency. I reported that cupid_stunt a few minutes ago actually. He's just been insulting pretty much everyone. I've yet to see anything happen.

off the top of my head, I think Darenn is a good mod when he's online, and also Greg is good. Laura, as much I get on so well with her, I think is perhaps a bit too nice for the role and maybe a bit too sensitive? Ben is also a really nice guy but he's so easily swayed by others imo that he's not a good mod. Vicky, I agree she's not suited to a mod position. Rory is rarely online, nor is Marc or ukturtle or SiaSiaSia.

Sh!t yeah I forgot about Darenn and Zee. They are good, however I don't think they are active enough as they should be. Laura is too nice, I agree. Ben is biased towards the BH. They could get away with murder. The last four should be stripped of their mod status and given to somebody who can actually.. you know... moderate the forums.

Nah.
Anybody in the BH should not be a mod. Cliques totally destroy the dynamics of a forum.

Disagree with that - electing members with lots of friends is part of the problem sometimes - they can't remain neutral enough - and are more likely to take the 'side' of their friends in an argument - even if they don't realize they are doing it. I have seen it happen many times!

But look at the alternative we have now - members who are either total pushovers or never online. Having friends keeps members active and involved in the forum and as I already said, just because a person is friendly with a particular group doesnt mean they're blinded by friendship and cant see if they're mates are in the wrong. Obviously there are some cases, like the younger members that would, but there are a lot of mature members, in groups of friends that would make good mods. Just not BH members because when your part of such a publicly defined clique, its hard to go against your mates.
I think it's difficult to be a mod and be completely unbiased tbf. Theyre only human. Obviously theyll be more sympathetic to those they like.

That's the thing though. There is absolutely NO discipline for some of us. Stacey gets banned for a fairly tame comment, while if it was someone else that had made that comment, they would get away with it. A mod can't pick and choose who and when they moderate. If they can't do the job, give it to someone who is better suited.

Should I say it?
Should I?
Really?
Again?
Okay.
MAKE THIS FORUM 16+. IF A MEMBER WHO IS UNDER 16 BUT MANAGES TO PASS FOR OVER 16, LEAVE THEM BE. BUT BAN ALL THE KIDDIES.
Right. Problem solved. Or at least most of them.
As much as I'd like that, it's not gonna happen. Too many members would complain (but I say **** 'em).
Anyway, the initial point of this thread was to remind the mods that we do actually have rules and most members tend to get away with breaking every single one of them unless someone causes a fuss. I was spending a lot of time on another forum for a while and couldn't help but compare their standards to ours. They give warnings out to anybody who so much as even double-posts, but all members are respectful and polite and the whole place just has a kinder atmosphere.

Well, yeah. They are a bit *too* strict, I have to say, but it does help having rules and mods to enforce them.
I'd also like to point out, that that forum does not have a swear-filter and all members have to be at least 13, so it's not even as if age or censorship matters.

- I'd make the discipline at a more disciplinery standard.
- Close unacceptable threads before an argument breaks out.
- Ban members who are constantly disobeying the rules.
- I'd be fair to the nice members.
- Fix people's spelling and grammar; how much fun that'll be.
- Stop the bullying and people ganging up on each other, also the cliques.

But what you are saying is not the same as people who CONSISTENTLY back up the same members - in different threads, on different topics! And that has nothing to do with sharing opinions - it is to do with backing up 'friends'!
What thread are you talking about where I 'teamed' up with others against you - I don't remember! As for the Cupid Stunt thread - he clearly was in the wrong - he usually is - don't think anyone would disagree with that! He was insulting everyone! And if you want to talk about closer to home - you are hardly in a position to criticize!
So people aren't allowed to have similar opinions? I tend to agree with certain people often because I agree with their views not because I'm backing them up. I've often argued and disagreed with many people, also I've agreed with what you have had to say at times Surely if I was apart of some group I'd take potshots at you every chance I get? Like I said before HUGE difference between cliques and shared opinions.
As for that bold bit can you remember a certain alcoholic and Anorexia thread? You were in the wrong there but that didn't stop you saying that everyone was against you and things like that.
The 'group' defence is nothing more then a deflection used by people who are in the ropes in an argument.

Their warnings/bans are slightly different to ours anyway. Over there if you accumulate three warnings in a short period of time you get a one or two week ban. Then all your warnings are stripped, however if you break the rules again, you are perma-banned.

The grammar and spelling thing was sarcastic, because, of course I'm not going to edit every single post on here.
But I would try my best at the ganging up on people and the bullying on here, because that isn't impossible to tackle.
I agree though. Giving formal warning for double posting is a bit much. I was just giving an example.
I think what would be a good idea though, is for anyone that does break the rules, a mod can correct the post/reply to the rule-breaker explaining their fault and that if they do it again, they will receive a warning/infraction.

It wasn't about right or wrong - it was about opinions! Mine wasn't popular - didn't think it would be! But one or two people were not just disagreeing - they were being aggressive and insulting - as usual! Some people it seems can't disagree without being extremely rude and offensive about it - and is based on personal issues - not the topic matter! That is what I objected to!

Good, its good you have a realistic view of what you could achieve. A lot of Mods on forums take on the job and see the appointment through rose tinted glasses.
When the results they want dont appear, disillusionment and disappointment set in and gradually the time they spend on the forums drops, till its a random pop on every now and again.

In the case of that thread it WASN'T about opinion, it asked if they actually existed and they do, you got a lot of hate because you had an inflammatory views like I got a lot of hate for my opinions on Cyber bullying. Just because people are agressive doesn't mean they are teaming up it's just that they agree that they disagreed with what you said like they did with me weeks ago.

In my opinion, there's too much emphasis on pointless rules like evading the swear filter, and not enough emphasis on ones which would improve the forum... like not having a million threads on one subject, and not making a new thread every time your dog farts.
It would be a better place overall, if the 'new posts' thing didn't fling up all manner of ****e.

Exaaaactly lily. In fact, it has been mentioned umpteen times, that we don't need a swear filter on here and if the admins feel that we do, make it optional. And I'm sure there are browser plugins that can filter any foul language much more consistently than this place can. We absolutely do need swear filters. Most of us have potty mouths anyway.
Spam has become a huge issue recently. Sick of seeing welcome back threads, post count parties, etc etc. WE DON'T CAAAAARE.

The only option for us is to ignore chat&games in our options, but that isn't something I'd want to do, as I do still enjoy off-topic chats with people.

The whole Stacey/MM&I duo is really annoying. They plauge every thread. And have the same arguments with the same people. MM&I should go back to BBfan85 or whatever, at least it made a bit of sense then.
Oh, and another thing, stop deleting every ****ing thread. What happened to just closing them?
Aye. It only causes half a dozen more threads to pop up wondering why the last one closed. Same goes for deleting threads under non existent rules. Like what happened the other night. Yeah, they were annoying spammy threads that were obvious reactions to threads being deleted, but deleting them only made twice more annoying, spammy threads pop up.
A TiBB rule should be cited by a moderator each time a thread is closed. If you can't cite a rule - then don't close the thread. Your only going to piss people off and it devolves into moderating based on subjectivity. It doesn't matter if you think the thread is pointless. Is it breaking a rule yet? No? Then don't close it.

Quote:
All those are already covered really in how the forum is moderated, apart from the 'cliquish behaviour' one. As much as I would like that not to exist on here isn't it up to the members themselves to reject it if they want?
Also the trouble with writing out in detail what is, and isn't, allowed is it doesn't leave room for any flexibility and people start quoting the rules back at you like some legal document (and no-one reads it through anyway, better to keep it simple)
That's a really dope idea, actually .
Still waiting for a response from James half a year on as to why an optional swear filter has not been implemented, considering it pleases all sides.
Technically, I believe that can't be acheived on this forum (easily at any rate). The swear-word filter is applied when you post; not when you view a thread.
I'm not really sold on the idea of not having swear-word filters at all.
Oh, and another thing, stop deleting every ****ing thread. What happened to just closing them?
It's bad for the image of the forum if petty arguments involving a small number of members are left of the forum, especially in the BB11 forum where new members will look at that forum first.
The thread, which was deleted there, it was just general arguing from the start, and no rule-break could easily be pinned down on one person. I didn't feel like reading through the whole thing, so it's better of deleted.
Jessica.

Can you make an announcement or something that people have to put threads in the correct section? It is really annoying.
Yeah fair enough if it cannot be applied to the forum and it's a technical thing.
I'm curious though : Why do you think swear words cheapen the forum, and not the dozens of under sixteen members who pay absoloutely no attention at all to where their fingers are going on the keyboard, do nothing but pick on others and pass stupid comments, and get away with it all?
We are not all stuck in your 1950's mentality towards the word '****'. We are, however, sick of kids squabbles driving the place into the muck. Everyone seems to agree on this yet nothing is ever done about it. I thought the majority was meant to win or something.
Just seems like really strange double standards. This forum looks cheap as hell, but swear words are certainly not whats causing that.
I never thought I would say this but the forums become to much of an easy ride. There is virtually nothing to fear from spending the day going from thread to thread derailing everything in sight. You might get an infraction point every now and then and - golly - a day or two of being banned from posting.
Heck, in the interest of fairness here I should have been banned a lot when I was at my worst but I wasn't really in retrospect.
I don't even know where the rules are. I was looking through the forums and couldn't find them?

Okay so basically these are our only rules..
1. Treat other forum members with respect, no insults. *Important*
2. Type posts properly and don't use text speech.
3. Don't post anything offensive.
"Offensive"? That should be elaborated on more.
And there is absolutely no respect on here.

I agree with those rules.
I do think we have good mods and admin. This forum does get out a hand quite alot though. Mods do have lifes and cannot moderate the site 24 hours.
For those that said Vicky isnt suited to be a mod, I disagree. I think she is one of the best moderators we have had in ages.
I must say though i do miss they days when it was the likes of Mike, Di2001, Amy etc.

Because of some of the idiot members who are getting away with everything recently, and I think someone said it should be bumped until it's in forced too :p

certainly Sia, Marc and ukturtle are useless mods, but tbf Rory goes through phases of being online for periods of time and when he is, he's a good mod. But I really can't stress how badly we need new mods.
Erm, excuse me. I stated clearly that I was a major mod for last summer, whearas this year I would be travelling, so getting on here would be hard. The same with Marc and Sia. We did our jobs well last year, and yes we are not on often, it's because we have other things to do also. If you do not like the situation, how about talking to Mark or james without coming across as stroppy or bitchy, and see if they can sort out the issue you guys are having.

There doesnt seem to be many mods around during BB. I thought there would be more of them but there seems to be less. Very odd.
Unless theyre hiding behind the pot plants.
