View Full Version : How to use torrents?

I've never tried to use them before cos I usually just use megavideo, but that's being a tit and not working. So can someone just like write a step-by-step guide on how to use it for me?
I know you need some kind of database thing for them like pirate buy or something? I'm just not sure what to do with them or anything... Or how to get them to download fast.

Oh ok. Great it's working now, thanks :)
Once it's got to 100% will it just work normally or will I have to convert it's file type or anything?

Popular shows should only take about half an hour at most if there are a lot of seeders.
Sometimes it speeds up loas after you first connect, it takes a minute or two.

are you downloading the latest episode?
if so it probably because everyone else is trying to download it as well
it should pick up as more people finish downloading

If its in a video format like Avi you can watch it on your computer, if you want to burn it to disc, you may have to convert it using programs like convert x to dvd or winAvi video converter.
Some posters will post the files that make up their torrent in a compressed format, like winzip or winrar, simply unzip that file (or if its more than one go to uncompress the first file in the directory listing, it will sort the rest itself) then you will have the vid, album etc.

Wouldnt take any notice of the eta for a file as you download mopre of it, you will find your connection speeds up as you have more to offer.
Plus other seeders and peers will change over time.

no
seeds are the people who are uploading
and peers are the people who are downloading (like you)
the more people uploading compared to the people downloading, the faster you download

It says 3(231) under peers?

tbh, I found torrent to be not worth the hassle and time. I just use direct download links, so much easier.

Its not so much how many seeds you have as how much they send to you, a couple of good seeds pumping you parts of a file at a high rate(80+kb/s) is better than lots of seeds feeding you 1kb/s.
Generally though with a reasonable number of seeds you should get a decent download rate. Just depends what way they have their torrent client(bit torrent, utorrent, Vuse etc) set up to upload. For the moment I would recommend you leaving your torrent program at its default.
Just remember to seed after you have finished downloading till you at least acheive a ratio of 1 in other words you have given to others what you received.
DONT HIT AND RUN!

the number before the brackets is how many you have direct connection to, the number in the brackets is how many people in the swarm, (either are seeding totally or are downloading) depending which column you are reading.
you may only have direct connection to a couple of seeds and a couple of peers however they may have direct connections to a lot more so as they get packets of info you may be offered them.
I normally force start a torrent and leave the computer on overnight as there are more torrent users in the states etc who come online and upload when i would be in bed with the comp off.

Seeding is when you just leave it alone after it has downloaded and don't delete it, it gives others a chance to download it.
You should sign up to a private tracker instead of using public, the police check some torrents on public (mostly music & new games/films) but you should be fine with tv.
On private it tracks how much you've downloaded & uploaded so hardly anyone hit & runs (loads of seeds, low amount of leechers = very fast) Million times safer compared to public.
You should check out filesharefreak or filenetworkblog to see which private trackers are open for signups.

It's going fast now, saying it'll only take 1 more hour to complete the download.
Thanks for the tips guys. And will look into that in the morning, Deejay :)

Yes, in case anyone was still wondering you have to download a little application and 'bitTorrent' seems to work fine.
Half those torrent sites do seem to be 'adware' or require sign-ups and don't really have much.
For whatever reason I find isohunt.com rules and I never have any problems
UKNova (UKNova.com) - private tracker for UK tv.
TheBox (TheBox.bz) - even better but not open signups
FileShareFreak (FileShareFreak.com) - torrent info
Both have 1 or 2 series of BB.
I'm on a few private sites and get free invites every month, they get deleted if I don't use them so let me know if you want one.

This is the one I use the most.
http://thepiratebay.org/
I started using this one today (free to sign up)
http://thebox.bz/main.php
and my torrent client is utorrent.
I read somewhere that it helps if you close all other applications that use the internet, it gives the torrent client better strength. So like if you close your browser and msn etc.. the torrent download may speed up a bit. :)

Oh wow. It's been very useful. I'm seeding for them at the moment. :)
The Police will be knocking on your door in about 2 hours
asking you to pay a £100,000 fine
Download VLC Player if you have not already, that way you will never have to worry about file formats. It's seems to play anything you throw at it.
Have to admit, I never seed. Four years and counting of hit and running.

Set up a static IP and open a port for the torrent client you use. Go to www.portforward.com and do it manually. Not only will this increase the torrent speeds, on some private trackers it allows you to downlaod some torrents hours or even days before people who dont. They class it as being 'connectable'
