View Full Version : My Dads friend just got stopped for having....
*mazedsalv**
03-06-2010, 03:50 PM
an English flag on his car.
He's the only one of my Dads best friends that supports England as all his other best mates are Italian and support them.
Well anyways earlier on, the POLICE stopped him and told him to take the English flag off, and I couldnt believe it!!
Its bad enough to go up to someone and tell them to take off another flag. eg. As we always put an Italian one up, and tell us to take it off. That is RACIST. Yes it is.
Never mind the actual people in the country. This has shocked me. Anybody should have the freedom to support whoever they want in whatever country. We have never had issues ove rthis in the past when we seen Spanish, German, Argentian, Italian etc... flags up in previous years.
Now isnt this the same as the police going up to a woman with a Burka and telling her to take it off?? Yes it is.
****ing ridiculous. And they say things are "racist" real excuse for that right now. They just want to stir trouble up.

I already know its true. I work in a bar and we were actually asked to remove the england flags.
Just everyone else reckoned it was just made up...and I would have no doubt been accused of being racist for stating a fact.
The country is going down the drain really.

I would imagine it had more to do with the flag being on the car - than who the flag supported!

Why can't people see the difference between racism and patriotism?
This is England. If I want to proudly support my country by showing the St George's Cross then why can't I? It's in no way, shape or form racist.
This country has gone right down the s**tter.

I was going to say that! (great minds) How big was the flag and where was it on the car?

Did the police tell him to take it off because it was racist or because it was a safety issue?

It's not official policy to ban flags on cars so whats with all the declaration about the country going to pot? These are individual cases. Decisions made in certain situations maybe because there is tension in that area at that time or whatever and it could spark something.
Ive seen hundreds of flags on cars.
Kerry
03-06-2010, 04:14 PM
I'd love to see them try on my street. Most houses and cars have them. Theres never been an issue. A muslim bloke up the road has the St George flying on his car.
Harry!
03-06-2010, 04:16 PM
This is England therefore we are allowed to display England flags no matter what people say.
Stacey.
03-06-2010, 04:16 PM
i thought you were allowed to have them on your cars tbh.
Lots of people have them on their cars round where i live

That's utterly ridiculous.
Shaun
03-06-2010, 04:17 PM
Are you sure it wasn't obstructing the driver's view (ie. on the back window or something?)
And as Zippy said, this is a rare case...sure, there're nutters out there, but it's not some grand scheme of 'PC gone mad'.
and another thing - it's not racist, as there is no "English race".

The reason we were given at work was that it 'promotes violence'. Nothing to do with anything else...I dont understand that at all though :/
Doesnt 'promote' violence any more than people wearing, say, a newcastle top. And even then its just a few nutters that actually cause trouble over football
*mazedsalv**

The flag was outside of the car, been in the car before and it wasnt view dstracting at all, you cant see it at all from inside the car.

Well I guess those nutters are out in their hoards at this time of year and frequenting the bars, just looking for trouble - just a precautionary measure really! They don't need much excuse!

I guess. Pretty pathetic really though.
When I lived over gateshead, a group of football hooligans 'the gremlins' smashed the bar downstairs up for no reason except that newcastle had lost. They did it to a few other bars too....
Grown men (and strangely a couple of women) acting like total animals over football.

When you think about it - I guess flags fluttering about in the wind on cars could be a distraction for other motorists as well - I can see a potential safety issue!

The police said nothing about safety when telling him off. Also, the police officers were not English.

Flying an England flag is considered provocative and racist, as is flying the union flag. This is because they are used by far right groups, and their use, can be seen as intimidating to people of other ethnic groups.
It is best not to display the England flag at all as doing so will bring trouble from the police and / or the local council.

Thats the way it is here, put one Ireland flag up beside your house when Ireland are playing and you've got a riot on your hands.
Put one Ireland flag on the back of your car, park it, go into tescos and out again and the Car is burnt.
People get so ****ing offended over a colour of a flag honestly.
I was asked to go do a peice of art for our school display thing last month, did this big peice of paterns and that and ONE TINY BIT in the corner had Green, White and Orange and what did they do?
They said they couldn't use that in the school, because of 3 colours and the school isn't even Protestant or anything ffs.
Idiots, Its so unfair what happened to your dad.

Nonsense. If you can't fly your own flag in your own country then there's something VERY wrong. And there is no laws saying such either.
You seem to want to pander to the far right and the ethnic sensitivities..**** that! Normal citizens need to reclaim the flag and not allow it to be hijacked. This is the best time to do it.
It's our flag and it's gonna fly everywhere this summer dammit.

My cousin who lives in Surrey has had numerous complaints for flying her St Andrews cross flag on HER flagpole in HER garden. To put 2 fingers up, she changed it to Stars n Stripes on Monday, and I've suggested she should change that to an Algerian one then a Slovenian one in due course.

I don't understand why it matters if you put a flag up. I thought it was rumours people were asked to take their flags down. The house opposite us has an italian flag up at their window all year round and has done for years i remember being little and seeing that flag at their window, its never offended anyone

Because in the UK the Italian flag has not been adopted as a symbol for the far right racist groups. The England flag has, and the union flag to some extent as well. With this in mind, displaying these flags is seen by some as being intimidating and hostile and therefore to be discouraged.
