I think he makes a good point - I would have liked to have heard more - what response he got to that!

I watched the show last night and quite enjoyed it. As to his comments, yeah, he's entitled to them as we all are, but I'm not sure if turning a blind eye to the troubles of other nations is the right way for any country to approach life. So no, he's wrong there. Sounds like a NIMBY comment to me.

Yeah it is. It shows a certain kind of apathy that's unhealthy in today's society. I mean, what if the roles were reversed and other countries were saying f$ck them about the problems over here? It's not the way to do business really.

we cant fight everyones wars. It is nothing to do with us and we have enough problems. We cannot begin to comprehend the nature of their dispute as we are not there and have a diff culture and worldview.

we have enough to sort out here without worrying about others abroad.

No no, I understand that, but it would be worrying if a whole nation were to promote that way of thinking publicly, you know?

I think many people do agree that they are sick of all the problems/fighting in the Middle East - it is endless - with no solution in sight! Maybe less press attention would have a more positive result - who knows!

Yes, and there was always genuine concern over the problems over here from other nations, a pressure that invariably helped with peace talks and the like. Other nations aren't as fortunate in that respect. Some African nations are still beating the tar out of one another, you know? But for the grace of God and all of that. I just think it's important for nations to maintain a healthy form of communication between one another, that's all. Saying f$ck them is the wrong way to go about it.

I sorta kinda agree but not really.
Good answer!

The problem for me is that it not worrying about Israel or supporting Israel,
but,
the fact is they are a democracy that has been our ally and maintains solid relations and isn't likely to pose any threat.
So we have to stand by our allies.

I'm not sure that means we give them all our money and defend anything and everything they do.
I don't know that means we even have to enjoy them,
but,
At least they are allies and the 'other guys' in this would be just as determined putting the UK under Islamic Law as they would like to see Israel nuked.

I dunno.. It does feel a little like the post-Crusade era where we all just start wondering if its worth the bother trying to defend some 'outpost' in the Middle-East at all costs when we have enough problems of our own.

Well.. not much of an answer here. I guess I can say I 'see what he is saying' in a sense.

Did this really become news?

Anyway, I agree with him a little bit. We live in such a big complex world, that the UK news' monomania around the Middle East can really get a bit much. This is why I really enjoy Channel 4's Unreported World.

As much as I hate Israel's home/foreign policy, much of the reason there is so much demand for news coverage of Palestine relates to our government and media's fixation with national security and the threat of Islamic terrorism.

Legend.

It's the old Thatcher adage of cut off the oxygen of publicity (when she referred to the IRA) and that's what Parris is talking about. You stop talking about these pathetic attention seekers and the world becomes a better place.

You misinterpret him and the nature of news.

We deal with these nations on a strictly economic basis and leave the drama completely alone. That's the notion i.e. the consequence of bitter pettyness is more bitter pettyness and the consequence of trade and cultural relations is a progressive understanding.

No, I understand his reasons for getting tired of all the troubles over there, and the fact that it's given far too much press coverage over here, but you see, if all nations were to adopt this way of thinking, cultural relations would break down. We have to be concerned with the goings on in other countries and not turn a blind eye to them, particularly in the age we're living in where news and reactions are available to us all at the touch of a button.

You can't be blase about an issue like this within the middle east that actually serves as the perfect illustration for the political problems and tensions that have affected us and been apart of world news for the last two decades. It ticks all the boxes - democracy, USA, muslims, violence, terrorism... you name it and it's contained within the conflict over there.
