1 - 1
The US was an own goal, terrible mistake by Green :/
He redeemed himself though in the 2nd half to be fair, I may have been more than a bit harsh in the heat of the moment lol
I'm actually shocked we didn't win
But hopefully this will shut up the arrogant people who think this is going to be a walk in the park

The papers are negative 99% of the time. If you're listening to them then, well... I won't even say what I'm thinking. And no I don't think we'll win the world cup, I've said Holland will for ages.
Im not listening to them at all; I'm judging it with subjective eyes here and it was awful.
Secretly i think England let the USA draw with them to make it more off a challenge in the last 2 games
Green thought
" I'll give them a goal "

Onyewu! And he is coming back from injury! He played well, given that Heskey is such a handful for a sweeper\!
Yeah, he was excellent. Very impressed with him.

I'm not shocked exactly, I knew it would be a hard game because of the mentality the US were going into the game with, I'm not upset really.
I'm taking the positives out of it because we looked much stronger in the second half and were unlucky not to score tbh.

He particularly highlighted Terry hoofing the ballover the midfield. No wonder Giles spotted that. He'd never have done that in his Ireland days. He wouldn't even let the GK kick the ball long.

Jesus Christ get a grip, if Engkand want to win the world cup, next game they have to pick up their performance by 100% and continue like that every game.
They are only top of their group because Its the name of the team they drawed with is USA not America.
The performance wasnty too bad but not the performance of World Cup winners.
And its alright saying they drew their first game in 1966 and won. Statistics and facts like that dont mean diddly, and its comments like that, that set other nations against us. Forget 66 its in the past. How many times have we won/drawn or lost our first game and then got knocked out?

Right negatives.... King is bolloxed, Gerrard and Lampard were hopeless together in midfield, you couldn't maintain possession and against a technically gifted side like Spain you would have been played off the park. Poor old Rooney got no service because you played the long ball game most of the time. Still have no idea who to play in goal and your back line is very questionable now.... Carragher?! It was just really bad.
Positives? Well, you got a draw at least and it's only the first match.
Stats? You lot are nuts. You were terrible and any half decent side would have killed you tonight.

No, I was just watching in shock, wondering how a team as poor as that can be considered one of the favourites. You're just blessed that you're in a weak group, that's all.
Locke.
12-06-2010, 10:26 PM
Positives:
Heskey proved that he was worthwhile taking and had a very good game, Gerrard had a strong game and made plenty of key challenges as well as scoring a goal, Glen Johnson who many people have had doubts over played very well down the right wing and played loads of great balls in, the second half the whole squad played well together as a team.
And as for the Gerrard and Lamped partnership not working, well we don't have to worry about that anymore anyway. Barry is back for the next game to sit in the middle with Lampard and Gerrard will either play instead on the left or just behind Rooney.
Poor Algeria.
MissKittyFantastico
12-06-2010, 10:27 PM
Positives: Johnson played well, Lennon played well, Heskey had an excellent game and should have scored, he and Rooney played well together actually, Rooney was man marked for most of the game, Lampard had an impressive second half, defence was a bit shaky in the first half but improved in the second, we had several chances on goal and were unlucky not to win.
Plus the USA are NOT an easy team by any means and like I've said some of these players are still learning how to play together effectively.

Good point actually I forgot about Barry being fit which will mean the formation changing anyway Gerrard sitting just behind Rooney would be a much better option imo :)

You were dire against an average side like the States who could have opened you up on a number of occasions if they had more guile up front. You bypassed midfield at every moment, reverting to the long ball game, which makes me think that Capello really is still unsure as to how to effectively utilize the players he has. Plus, it shows that if Rooney is marked out of it you're in all sorts of trouble.
You couldn't maintain possession which really isn't a good sign for a team who wants to win a world cup. It's the most important facet of the international game and you failed miserably with it. How many times did you lose the ball cheaply or just hoof it upfield? It was terrible.

USA are not an average side anymore they are one of the most improved international teams in the game.. we had most of the american attacks covered so they didn't have chance to open us up... And we have a big man up front so why not huff ball it? it ain't pretty but it works and for the most part we kept the ball on the ground.. did you not see the build up play for the goal? Rooney had his chances and on another day could have scored them roll on Algeria and Slovenia..

Just repeating myself now and it's getting boring. We didn't play the best and no we didn't look like a team who will go on to win at the moment but it's the FIRST GAME. There were plenty of positives to take out of that game, we did actually make some excellent plays through the midfield, there's no law that says the ball can't be hoofed up, if it works why not? We've never played the most attractive football in the world, but there's plenty to work with there.

Well, not the tabloids... broadsheets will have a column or two about it.
Actually interesting looking at the Guardian now and seeing how people have been rating the players. Gerrard is getting the highest mark for England with 6.4, and the average is about 5. States are getting far higher marks. At least some people see that it was a bad performance.

Yes that about sums it up. We did give away too much posession and we do need to step it up considerably, especially when it gets past the group stages, but for a first game, against the hardest opposition in our group, with some players who are still finding their feet/getting used to playing together, I don't think it was actually that shabby at all. And the USA played exceptionally well, especially in the first half.

I'm not being derogatory here. It just wasn't a good performance, that's all, especially from a team who have aspirations of winning the whole tournament. I'm putting this into perspective here for a team who were apparently one of the favs prior to the start of the World Cup. You wont be winning anything based on that performance.

He wasn't that solid last season I'll give you that, he flapped about a bit too much for my liking, but he's still a really decent keeper imo

I really think you'd be much happier if you just admitted you're bitter as hell that Ireland didn't make the WC and now you're doing anything to knock the team that most people on the forum are backing to win the thing. Go on, it won't kill you.

It has nothing to do with that, seriously. I just love teams that hype themselves up falling on their ar$es, that's all. And you have. Don't make it into something it's not.

I don't see the team hyping themselves up. And that's really a very sad and negative view to have on the whole thing really if that's the actual reason.

it has nothing to do with arrogance for me or "I told you so". The difficulty with English fans on here is that you can't admit your teams failings or have realistic goals. That's why your team from 1990, who reached the semi finals by the way only to be knocked out in a penatly shoot out - were greeted with just the press and a few fans, whereas Ireland, who reached the quarter finals in the same World Cup were greeted by half of the country. Game over as far as I'm concerned. And that's a fact.

I'm quite aware what happened in 1990. And stop tarring every England supporter with the same brush to suit your arguments. You're the one that just can't let it go and then wonder why people in here make jokes about the Irish not being there this time around. I'm actually starting to think that you thrive on the attention and the hostility and believe me that really is sad.

Don't think you watched the second half mate.
Was a good performance from USA first half, shame they needed Robert Green to score for them.
Just have to beat the other 2 by more goals than USA do and the group is sorted.
Exactly after greens mistake (i dont blame green humans are inclined to make mistakes sometimes)
Our performance was quality and we pressed a lot in the second half.. should have got another dont believe heskey missed a sitter..

I loved posting pictures of henry and everything.
Thats not because of hate of ireland, the fans just annoyed me saying ireland would demand a rematch.. no irish player would do that..
When realistically, going to the world cup would make ireland 192m. and a player with a split second if they thought they could get away with it would. and no one could grasp that.
As for tarring us all.. i never say england are going to do fantastic.. nor do a lot of people.

Americans don't care.
The vast majority of Americans don't know what the World Cup is or that it is happening now or that there is a US Team.
Nobody cares.
The only way they would care would be if the USA actually won the World Cup and even then just watching it in the same way they think its funny Lance Armstrong kept winning some Euro sport they don't watch either.
I would be amazed if you could land in New York or Las Angeles tomorrow and randomly ask 100 people on the street if to name a US player and someone actually could.
I just think its funny because England watches this 1-1 game like its the most important thing on earth or like there is a big international rivalry,
yet,
no Americans care, watch it or even heard about it. Those American fans you see in the stands?
That is ALL the fans and 80% of them are expats from the UK or some other soccer-mad countries.
The rest are friends or spouses along for the ride.
