Did people feel sorry when JJ cried?

Because it comes to my mind that most people didnt feel sorry for Rachael when he made her cry three nights in a row. But when a girl argues back with him, he puts on the waterworks.

I felt sorry for John james because he genuinally seems to like Josie so it was difficult to take teasing from her when she knew he was ill.
also guess the fact his father died in horrible accident not so long ago might make him more emotional generally.
