Olly Murs has confirmed details of his first single release.

The X Factor runner-up has co-written a track called Please Don't Let Me Go to be released on 29 August.

In a video message to fans posted on his website Murs said: "It's a summery song - I can't wait for it to come out."

He added: "I'm very much looking forward to that because I'm going to be going to the shop to buy it myself. I'm so excited about it."

The 26-year-old ex-office worker from Essex finished in second place in the 2009 X Factor series, beaten in the final by Joe McElderry.

Speaking to Newsbeat in March Murs said he was keen to distance himself from the reputation he had built on the TV talent show.

Talking about his forthcoming album he said: "We want something that's going to showcase me as an artist and get rid of the X Factor name as such."

He's done loads of writing for the album he;s written with Guy Chambers [of Robbie fame] and Claude Kelly [Miley, Xtina, Kelly Clarkson, Adam Lambert] has done some work on the record too

I honestly think this has a better chance of doing well than Joe's inevitable flop single. Olly has way more mass appeal than Joe and has more potential as a credible artist. The fact he's got a co writing credit really does make him look so much better, just look what it did for Diana Vickers, she's taken seriously as a bonafide popstar now, not an X Factor contestant.

Olly

I'm really impressed that he's turning his hand to writing, I agree it makes him automatically more credible than most of the X Factor lot. Of course if it turns out to be god awful it'll be another matter but good on him for having a legitimate bash at it, I actually think he could do well.

I think, in the spirit of the video, it should have been released in May or June. But still better late than never. I wonder if Joe and Shayne's songs will be as popular - or do even better?
