The Renaissance of the 15th and 16th century.

Or more to the point, the age of discovery and exploration.

Probably the meteor that hit the earth, set the atmosphere alight, and killed everything including the dinosaurs. Followed closely by Chris De Burgh.

Right, Ive already answered religion, but apart from that (and things like the human race etc) the worst things that stand out in my memory (in my lifetime) are 9/11, Dunblane shootings and the Boxing Day tsunami. More will probably come to me, but those 3 are the occasions when I couldn't take in what I was seeing/hearing.

MrGaryy

Definitely religion. Root of most evil and trauma imo [obviously not including natural disasters].

But being serious, I agree with the guy who said the human race.

Just what I was about to say..

How can there not be anything worse than religion?

It's your opinion of course but surely you can see that it's flawed.

There were alot of horrible things that happened, I don't see how you could pick one being worse than another though where people have suffered and died. Though as one person pointed out most of those horrible things were done by other human beings so we are probably the answer to your question!

Religions - so divisive, the cause of so many wars, the cause of people believing in something which don't exist rather than getting-on with their short time and with others on the planet.

Yeah but it's people behind all of the religions so again I'd say humans, we're our own worst enemy!

I'm a Socialist and strongly aethiest which is why I answered "religions" Naimh - I believe only ithat people should try to make the best of their short time on the planet, and (in addition to my above statement) also detest the waste of money/belief that folks invest in something non-existant

I like your thinking Ian and you're dead right, people need to focus on this life and time on Earth, maybe there is something after and maybe there isn't but we all should be living in the here and now and concentrating on things that we can actual have some control over, like how we interact with other people

The human race fuelled by religion. I think you can pretty much link all unnecessary, wars etc. (excluding natural disasters) back to religion or some kind of belief.

Gamma Ray Bursts.

Cosmic death rays that can wipe life off entire planets. It is possible that one of the mass extinctions on this planet was the result of a gamma ray burst.

Natural phenomenon is far more cruel than humanity.
