View Full Version : Big Brother has gone backwards

daniel-lewis-1985

Back in the day Big Brother was this HUUGE phenomenon that didnt give a **** about its haters and was not afraid of controversy.

It opened peoples eyes to Gay people (Brian) Transexuals (Nadia) and even as late as BB7 with Petes tourettes.

The alcohol was pretty much a huge part of every series as was housemates flashing their tits even in BB1 Nicola had her fanny out and Craig his MASSIVE willy swinging for all of Great Britain to see and these both made the highlight shows.

Fast forward to 2010.

-Housemates are not allowed to have their alcohol and big brother controls how much they get by how many units per day is recommended by the government.

-Mario streaks through the house naked and they deem it to controversial to show in the highlights

-Any arguing and name calling is classed as bullying and Big Brother repremands a housemate on anything they think may cause a little upset in the outside world

I remember when Brian called Narinder a **** as a joke and it was totally fine coz thats all it was A JOKE

If that happened now all hell wold break lose.

Big Brother has gone from ground breaking television which stuck its 2 fingers up to the toffs and politically correct people turning their noses up at it to this tiny little show treading on egg shells afraid of what may happen to it over stupid things like housemates getting drunk or getting naked.

As much as i love BB the show has become to tame and as its the last series i expected them to go out with a bang and basically tell all those people critisizing to **** off!

Exactly. C4 want everything boring so Offcom don't come along and have a go at them. Ever since the race row the show hasn't been the same.

I can't wait for another chanenl like Five to get their hands on BB. They'll be more lenient and allow more alcohol.

Yeah its all channel 4. Endemol make BB all around the world and show people having sex in Germany lol so fair do's to them.

I just couldnt believe JJ got a warning today over sunshines knickers getting flashed. Sunshine knew it was a joke its not as if he ripped her underwear off and started fingering her is it!

This series definitely feels like its on a tight leesh. Dunno what theyre playing at but its not the explosive final series we all hoped for.

Then again, we'd be more sad about it ending if it was amazing.

I dunno why Channel 4 are being such arses. It's the last series anyway. If they have loads of alcohol and there's a controversy, who cares? It's the last one on their channel.

Seems to me they're deliberately wanting ratings to be low so there's no future for bb on another channel. Why else would they put it on at ridiculous times like 8pm and 10.30pm on a weeknight next couple weeks?

The yard of ale challenge subtitled, non alcoholic beer, says they are at last taking some responsibility for what they show.

It's the same with the Do Not Try This At Home warnings on TV for years.

Where alcohol's concerned, it's the responsible thing to advise viewers that drinking is not all fun.

PC gone mad? You have to act responsibily if you are a broadcaster.

You don't have to be a child to be impressionable. People of all ages look for guidance from TV as to what is safe, normal behaviour. You should not be forming the impression that it is safe to drink to intoxication because you saw it on a reality TV show.

TV output can't be tailored to your individual requirements - it has to consider society at large. That includes impressionable people who think it's safe to do what is depicted on BB for example.

Anyway, watching BB to see people pissed like in the early days is passé now, it's been done to death.

The great thing about alcohol on BB is that it brings down the barriers and shows their real feelings. So many are on constant guard in there. Scared of what they say.

Some people need saving from themselves.

I tell you, the day is not very far away (if it hasn't yet arrived) when there will be a review of some of the output of TV. The day has passed, actually, when it was OK to say sambo or nignog, like in the 70's. Likewise, more people are recognising a correlation between drinking on TV and problem drinking in society.

For art's sake I deplore censorship. But C4 is a public broadcasting service with a duty of care to its audience. In context, I say anything goes, but Big Brother is not the kind of programme that I would call art. True, it has thread new ground and broken taboos, and if there are any more taboos it can find to thread on then it should. But watching people pissed up all the time isn't one of them.

Giving them alcohol once a week or so is hardly making them drunk all the time. In fact, depriving them of alcohol at all makes the show very unrealistic and hardly a reflection of real society.

Fake and controlled more like.

BB don't withhold alchohol from the housemates in the interests of the show. It's because they have a draconian regulator breathing down their necks. Other than that, I think most could agree the show would be much more fun with some booze... and don't tell me you didn't enjoy Fight Night.

There's too many benders on it this year. That's where it's gone wrong. There comes a point where orthodoxy and unorthodoxy cross over and the majority feel marginalied; or is this just a show for pooftas?

Good post Daniel.

I think Kinga and the bottle's to blame for the nudity/sexual content, CBB5 for offensive jokes and arguments, and not really sure about alcohol. Maybe Ch4 got scared Ofcom would eventually complain about that too

You're right about Endemol showing all sorts in foreign BBs. If BB does come back in a few years or on another channel I hope it gets the classic BB treatment!

Do you think the fact it's the last series on Ch4 makes it worse?

I think the producers have got the show right this year with the house, HMs, tasks etc but it would've been a bigger sereis if Ch4 did show a bit more flesh, booze and let arguments naturally escalate

To be honest Channel 4 wanna move on from BB and are trying to re-launch their channel so they probably dont want BB getting a **** load of attention.

Yeah, I get what you mean. I'm surprised Ch4 gave this year as much publicity as it got tbh.

If it makes it any easier (or worse lol) a lot of TV shows aren't as bold or controversial as they were. Look at the amount of Ofcom complaints Eastenders gets for a gay kiss and killing a dog (offscreen!)

I have to agree with this censorship rubbish.

I don't understand what has ever been shown on BB which hasn't been shown countless times in films and dramas broadcast at the same time or earlier on all channels? All of these, exactly like BB, are a dramatised depiction of real life!! If you don't like real life you have a bit of a problem don't you?!!

Our country's increased drinking rate/drug rate/teenage pregnancy rate is maybe just a little bit down to the fact that we have to work 50 hours + per week just to tread water financially, we can't say or do anything without the fear of some "PC" PC tightening the handcuffs, and you get free council houses and a life made for your teenage fumblings.

All BB is doing at the moment is reinforcing the idea that positive discrimination is positive - I reinforce the idea that positive discrimination is discrimination!!! I find it sad :(

I agree. It's BBs own fault. If they had have jumped in right away with the Jade racism thing. Instead of letting it drag out. It would not have blown up like it did. Then they would not be as carefull as they are now. Had they delt with the Jade thing better. Then Emily would have just got a warning in BB8 and the series would not be walking on eggshells. They brought it on themselves.
