British actor Andrew Garfield is to play comic book superhero Spider-Man in the next outing of the film series, it has been announced.

The 26-year-old, raised in the UK but born in California, will begin work on the new movie in December.

His previous credits include last year's The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus alongside the late Heath Ledger.

Former Spider-Man star Tobey Maguire and director Sam Raimi departed the franchise after making three films.

The new instalment, to be shot in 3D, will focus on the formative years of Peter Parker, the unremarkable youth who - after being bitten by a radioactive spider, is transformed into the superhero.

The movie has yet to be named.

Mark Webb, who will direct Garfield in the film, said of the new star: "Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor's work understand his extraordinary talents.

"He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker."

Spider-Man producer Avi Arad added: "We believe we have found the perfect choice to take on this role and lead us into the future."

Garfield, who was revealed to the press as the new Spider-Man in Cancun, Mexico, has a wealth of British TV roles to his credit.

He won the best actor Bafta in 2008 for his role in hard-hitting Channel 4 drama Boy A.

His other credits include Doctor Who, Sugar Rush and Channel 4's Red Riding trilogy.

Intriguing choice, I was betting on Logan Lerman or Josh Hutcherson personally but he looks like he could be good, hopefully he's better then Toby Maguire anyway.

Who the ***** is that mess?

I thought Zac Efron was doing this?
Would of much preferred him and Vanessa to have parts in this not that guy.

Glad he got it..... better to have a relative unkown than a "big shot" like a few names being thrown around

They need to stop flogging a dead horse with these films really, the last one was shocking.

Don't know why, but he just looks like Spiderman

Even moreso than the person who done it before him

It's a reboot though, not a Sequel. It's like what Batman Begins/The Dark Knight was to Batman and Robin.

I think it stands a good chance.

The one from Kickass was also on the shortlist to play Spiderman as well.

I hope it does well, I really do....

I want franchises to continue and grow and stop rebooting though....

Blame Raimi and Sony, they clashed too much in the making of Spiderman 3 and that's why it was so awful. Sony wanted Venom while Raimi wanted the Sandman so they just through in all the story ideas and none of the plotlines were done justice.

Hopefully Sony have learnt their lesson this time.

Would have preffered a Spider-man 4 than this to be honest. It didn't need a reboot, it was still a top earning franchise. But I'll still watch it.

It really did. Spiderman 3 was godawful.

I actually think this reboot will be a breathe of fresh air into the franchise, like Spiderman 1 was at the time.
