View Full Version : Why were past winners successful HMs?

Rather an open question, I know.
Why were they popular with the public?
Was a strategy involved?
What aspects of their behaviour and personality led to them winning?
What physical aspects, if any, endeared them to the public looks, dress sense, grooming and personal care.
What types of personality in the house did they ally with?
What types of personality in the house did they clash/make enemies with?

The only winners I actually liked were,
BB2 - Brian Dowling, who won I think for being a geniunely nice man, who had a great laugh.
BB3 - Kate Lawlor who was a normal girl, compared to some of the housemates anyway.
BB5 _ Nadia, who had me in stitches from the beginning of the series until the end
and thats it!
I think a good housemate should be funny, not take themselves too seriously, join in the tasks and not assume they are the winner from day one! :D

Nadia, Pete and Brian Belo were pitiful freaks - on that basis, Corin and Andrew have it all sewn-up

Because they're neutral sort of? Like Sophie, Rachel Rice. Don't get too involved in anything too much really.

Craig - came out the hero of the Nasty Nick saga, won the nation over wth his 'cheeky lad' behaviour
Brian D - outlandishly funny, his acceptance of his sexuality was endearing
Kate - fun-loving ladette
Cameron - sensible, down-to-earth, did the Africa swap
Nadia - outlandishly funny, her transgender history was endearing
Anthony - typical lad, I guess. Took Makosi's crown after the pool incident turned everything around
Pete - crazy fun-lover, fave since before entering, partly sympathy vote
Brian B - who knows? He was a clown - someone similar to Jade, Emma, Nikki finalle won it. Fresh after CBB5 people wanted a non white winner? After the abysmal all-female launch people wanted a male winner?
Rachel - sort-of-funny nice girl, wasn't an overbearign character like some, ignored Rex slating her
Sophie - funny blonde bimbo, came out better trying to distance herself from Kris, pretty muh distanced herself from the whole Noirin and admirers show
All the CBB winners were because they were the most like 'normal' regular people (or in Chantelle's case, was), except Shilpa (victim of bullying and/or racism) and Ulrika (****** knows why? lol)

Although I liked Nadia, she did get the sympathy vote. Other factors were Dan (probably BB5's best housemate) saying he wasn't interested in winning and the rest of the lipgloss bitches were already gone. Her other three opponents in the final week were the placid Stuart who wasn't a very big character, Shell being another under the radar type (although still a perfectly good housemate looking back) and Jason who everyone hated.
Pete won on sympathy vote and avoiding as much conflict as he possibly could. He didn't deserve to win imho. Not when up against Aisleyne.
Brian Dowling won on his own merits, he was the central character of that series.
Belo won for being funny and childlike, he had a lot of detractors, but he was the deserving winner of BB8 in my view. I think he made up in emotional intelligence what he lacked in intellect.
Anthony got the sympathy vote after having lies told about him by Makosi and Craig stalking him. He never lied about wanting to win though so fair play to him in the end.
Kate also got something of a sympathy vote. In the final she was pitted against Jade, who never stood a chance, Alex who was too much of a divisive figure and Jonny who alienated a lot of the audience due to his lechery around Kate. If only Alison hadn't been evicted... then maybe BB3 wouldn't have been such a poor series.
The reasons for Rachel's victory I wish I knew. I can understand the audience sympathising with her over Rex's bullying behaviour, but she never took the bull by the horns and saw Rex for what he was in the way that the bookies' favourite Mikey did. In her entire time in the house, she never gave a contentious opinion on anything and never had any entertainment value for me. She also claimed she never wanted to win, which I thought was a complete cop out. My thoughts on this one is that it may have had something to do with a block vote by bookmakers.
Sophie is not one of my favourite winners either. BB10 wouldn't have suffered without her. But she enjoyed her experience and formed genuine friendships in the house, which makes her a better winner than Rachel and most certainly more deserving than the awful, fake Charlie. Still, out of the final 5, Rodrigo or David would have been better, but they were divisive characters so it was never going to happen.

I think the show is more than just about the final winners.

Craig - came out the hero of the Nasty Nick saga, won the nation over wth his 'cheeky lad' behaviour He won a huge sympathy vote cos of what he said he was going to do with the winnings if he won
Took Makosi's crown after the pool incident turned everything around Boring non deserving winner
Pete - crazy fun-lover, fave since before entering, partly sympathy vote PARTLY SYMPATHY VOTE?? TOTAL SYMPATHY VOTE!! He was an asshole!
Brian B - who knows? He was a clown - someone similar to Jade, Emma, Nikki finalle won it. Fresh after CBB5 people wanted a non white winner? After the abysmal all-female launch people wanted a male winner? Most awful winner of all time!
Rachel - sort-of-funny nice girl, wasn't an overbearign character like some, ignored Rex slating her Rex was robbed, BB stitched him up by putting his GF in
Sophie - funny blonde bimbo, came out better trying to distance herself from Kris, pretty muh distanced herself from the whole Noirin and admirers show

Lol, I love it when people think Rex was stitched up when they chucked Nicole in.
Rex got more special treatment than any other housemate in history. BB probably saved his ass on the week 8 eviction night by not even disclosing her going in until the voting lines were close. Otherwise, he would have been dead cert to go.
Viewers saw Rex as a boring arsehole with or without his girlfriend in there.

Agree with a lot of this but BB3 isn't considered a poor series at all. It had the largest audience share, is still regarded as one of the best series, is regarded as the best series of BBs1-4, and just earlier this week 'Nasty' Nick Bateman admitted he thinks BB11 is the best most 'normal' series since then

Yeah, I'm obviously one of the odd ones out as the series was immensely popular in its time with a final show exceeding 10 million peak ratings.
I guess it just felt like a bit of a letdown to me after how good BB2 was. Too many unlikeable characters.

Generally because they were complete and utter bores and therefore didn't offend anyone, with the exception of Brian (BB2) and Nadia.

Lol. I don't think Craig ever openly said what he'd do with his winnings.
I'd still have preferred a Makosi or even Eugene win - and that's sayign somethign
Pete was marmite, you love him or hate him
Brian was indeed awful, but who wasn't that year? Would have preferred the twins, but then I think "Really? Would I?" lol
Rex was also marmite, love him or hate him. Nicole didn't do him any favours but tbh I don't think he did himself many either

I think its a case of whose left standing more than who is the ultimate favourite. Often the big characters act up and destroy their own chances.
But generally the winner needs to be somebody the public, especially females, can relate too. For female HMs they need to be self depricating and not too full of themselves. And looking a bit rough without make up helps.
Guys need to be carefree and funny. Not arrogant or cocky.

I recently rewatched the BB2 and BB3 DVDs and personally struggled to pick an overall favourite lol. BB2 had a great house, entertaining HMs, tasks etc but BB3 was all about being new and trying different things eg live launch, more HMs, new and bigger house, the divide

Lol. I don't think Craig ever openly said what he'd do with his winnings. - I think HE did say it but Maybe HE DIDN'T say it, but his family and friends certainly let it out which garnered him huge sympathy vote cos up until the last week or 2 he spent most days asleep in bed or on the couch. Anna should have won BB1

He didn't... I don't know where 6*Alives got that one from.
If only the same could be said for sympathy seeking twats like Carole, Darnell, Kathreya, Charlie, Shabby and Dave.

In which case it's more about what his friends/family said than he, himself

The viewers are much more aware nowadays which is why Darnell, Kat and Charlie, in particular, were greatly criticised. Also, a lot of members on here are aware Pete did well partly based on sympathy for his disablity which is why since then neither Mikey or Verne won their series

Are you joking? Darnell had a routine sob-story week on week everytime nominations were beckoning. He also mentioned he would use the prize money to see his family again, which never made it to the HL show of course. Darnell was in a league of his own for self-pity.
