I have known guys like John James before. He has emotional attachment problems - this does not make him a bad person. He relies hugely on friendship which he can rely upon. He sees any harsh slagging or being lied to (as joise has done on a couple of occasions) as a betrayal of trust as it's making fun of him with the other housemates at John James expense. He doesn't like if he feels someone is messing with his emotions and is naturally guarded, very likely due to childhood experiences. What I find offensive about this is your eagerness to explain away his rudeness, aggression and spite as "sometimes entirely justifiable" and then effectively say "ok there -are- times when he's just plain horrible, but it's not often so it's ok".

Wow way to read into my comment. Firstly I didn't say his looks excused his at times unacceptable behaviour [and at times entirely justifiable, re: Rachael]. He is immature but I do believe his intentions always come from the right place and I feel is ignorance and lack of social intelligence get him into trouble so often that it makes him out to be more argumentative than he is.
